  1. I'm just going to quote this for the overall insane oddity of its almost correctness, but not quite. Similar to our 9th inning rally--which in the end, means...nothing..... It is the right thing to do, apologize for not taking him out sooner. It’s what you would do if you were manager, it’s what I would do, and it’s what CC will do. Apologize? Burnes is a professional pitcher. It's his job to get outs. This is craziness.
  2. Hmmm... keep Grandal in 2020, trade Pina, have Nottingham do a one-year apprenticeship? Get us a year closer to one of Fry/Hummel/Henry/Feliciano taking over... Cooper Hummel? The same guy who has made all of 8 appearances at catcher the last two seasons, and none this year. The one who's also batting .224 at AA? I applaud your sticktoitiveness, but you gotta just let some dreams die.
  3. It should be pointed out that Freitas is only 30, and is playing a position known for having players who come on later than normal. It's probably doubtful, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that he's being looked at as a future contributor.
  4. Davies has been as fine as usual IMO. Just the 2 hits, 3 errors behind him. He should have been out of the last inning with no damage. Davies has been just as much of an "ace" as the Phillies "ace". Throwing the ball well this season. I love Davies. Huge, huge fan, so don't misconstrue what I said as bashing him. Every pitcher has a day when they just aren't as crisp. And I agree, the defense hasn't done him any favors.
  5. It's his first taste of the Big Leagues. There will be highs and lows. Hopefully the Brewers stay the course with him, because he's got the talent to make it pay off I think.
  6. Politics has always been fodder for late night hosts. Go back and watch some Johnny Carson re-runs on one of those MyTV stations, as he always had fun with what was going on politically. He poked fun at all of them, though. I agree that it is amped up and more pointed over the last few years. But I'm old school when it comes to politics and media. I don't think there should be any conservative or liberal voices in the true media. Media should be unbiased. I know, yeah right. Colbert is the worst when it comes to politics. Most of his show is pretty politically charged. Kimmel has softened his political stuff after going really hard for awhile. Fallon tends to steer the most clear of politics when compared to the others, and is usually safe if you are sick of the political bend late night.
  7. Being a backup catcher is primarily about defense. I would always rather have a 600 OPS backup catcher that's strong defensively than an 800 OPS bad defender. Freitas is a top notch defensive catcher. Certainly on the surface better than Nottingham. This move isn't a big deal to me but yeah I'm surprised it wasn't Freitas. I'm certainly not complaining, as I really like Nottingham's long-term future, but I agree that it is surprising. The only thing I can figure is that they view Pina's absence as a short-term thing, and wanted a catcher up who was familiar with most of the arms at the big league level.
  8. Per Adam McCalvy this morning. I am happy about this, if not a little surprised. David Freitas is hitting substantially better in San Antonio right now, and he's got a good defensive reputation. Still ... with Grandal on a 1-year pact, they need to see if Nottingham is in the equation for 2020 and beyond at the C position.
  9. The Phils have all the talent, but so much of that team has turned over, I just wonder how long it's going to take for them to gel. They are the current guinea pig for if buying your way to a championship is feasible in today's MLB economic climate.
  10. I fixed this There was a lot of East Coast bias surrounding those teams before this season. I'd say 4 teams were getting pretty major hype.
  11. Can you please stop saying this. This team has made absolutely no indication that the thought of Nelson going to the pen has even crossed their minds. He's been a starting pitcher his whole career, they are stretching him out as a starter right now, and he's coming off a major+++ injury that likely necessitates a higher level of maintenance and recovery work between outings. That is not a guy you stick out in the pen and demand to get ready quickly for short, spontaneous outings. I mean, I've been wrong before about this team, but on this one, I feel pretty darn certain. Jimmy Nelson isn't going to be a reliever this year. His options are starting for the MLB team, optioning him and starting him at AAA, or a trip back to the DL if he deemed not ready.
  12. I think they probably think they have a better Kratz in Freitas. I'd rather see Kratz or Nottingham, though. Freitas does nothing for me.
  13. Tough luck run charged to JJ. He looked electric tonight.
  14. I think any idea of moving Thames is predicated on the idea that Shaw finds his swing quickly when he goes on a rehab assignment, and can come up to provide at least a serviceable LHH option in a platoon with Aguilar at 1B/occasional 2B/3B/LF bat. Given Shaw's age, production and years of control remaining, he needs to continue to be looked at as part of the present and future. A lot of assumptions here, though. If Shaw doesn't go down to AAA and hit well, there is no way I trade off Thames.
  15. You can reverse engineer any explanation you want, but nobody has ever come up with a conspiracy theory that actually makes predictions any better than the odds. If the Knicks or Lakers had won, people would be crying foul because big markets. The lottery is random. Officiating has not always been, so if you want conspiracies, look there. The lottery is still really dumb though. It's the NBA's own fault that teams have to tank. The number of games, the soft salary cap and max salaries, the ridiculously low rookie salaries, the superstar calls... it would be stupid not to tank. So let's punish the worst teams and their fan base even more? Stupid. Should just be in reverse order of record. If you think tanking is bad now, it would be even worse if that were enacted. It would be a genuine Race to Last every year.
  16. 2 down... 8 days apart. 3rd and 11th of May. 17th, 23rd and 28th to go? (SA doubleheader on the 27th and he gets back on every 5th schedule) Leaves Memphis on the 29th and meets MKE in Pittsburgh for the 30th as SA goes to Omaha. Sounds right. I think for the last 2 rehab starts they will want the 4 day rest to make sure he recovers ok, so 22nd and 27th then starts for the big club June 1 in Pittsburgh. Unless they decide to put him in the bullpen, because our starters too strong. I just can't see a bullpen move for Nelson. He has never relieved in his career, they are keeping him on a strict throwing/rest schedule, and he's coming off a major rare injury for a pitcher. I would imagine the last thing they'd want to do is put him in a spot where he'd have to get ready to come into a game on short notice. That just doesn't seem prudent for a pitcher in Nelson's situation I think it's rotation or bust right now. But you are right, the rotation is performing very well right now, which makes the decision infinitely more difficult. These situations to often sort themselves out, but the time for that to happen is quickly dwindling.
  17. Nelson has never come out of the pen in his career, and they are keeping him on a strict schedule so far in his rehab. I don't see them backtracking and throwing him in the pen where he is going to have to warm fast to come into unplanned situations. That would seem like the opposite of what you should do with a guy coming off a major shoulder injury. I think its starter or bust for Nelson right now, and I'd lean very heavily toward the former. Hopefully things will sort themselves out in the next week or so, otherwise they will have to make a tough call.
  18. Lost in the excitement of the Hiura debut was yet another very nice outing from Brandon Woodruff. The 5 walks weren't ideal, but he managed to scatter them enough where it didn't cost him. He's really come on in the last month. The Brewers' starting pitching is in a very good place right now. Pretty much since when Gio was signed. He's been a nice stabilizing pillar for the rotation. They are going to have some interesting decisions soon on Anderson and Nelson.
  19. I think even the most pessimistic of Brewer fans realizes that Shaw is likely still part of the future success of this team. Regardless of how Hiura does, this team need's Shaw's big bat back in working order.
