  1. I agree with this. Stearns made other moves previous years to cut loose high k players, at this point he has very few holdovers from before his tenure and the roster is mostly his guys. Smoak certainly isn't a low k guy, but his roughly 22% over the last 3 years is lower than Thames 31%. Probably not Stearns ideal guy, but a move in the right direction. ...and then he signs Keon Broxton.
  2. Smoak is projected for a .342 wOBA. He had a .371 wOBA in 637 PA two years ago. His numbers will go up because we have the luxury of soft platooning him with Braun. Not sure what you consider an above average bat? I think Stearns's roster construction is brilliant. All we need now is to trade Arcia and find a quality 3B (in a dream would Donaldson) for in all honest the deepest positional roster in recent memory. Yeah, let me walk my comment back a little as I think I overstated it. I get that they are improving in the margins, and that isn't a bad thing. I don't necessarily think the the current path of the roster construction is poor, but it now seems somewhat contingent on adding a quality every day third baseman. In my opinion, this article's findings ring more true than ever, Where Would The Top MLB Free Agents Make The Biggest Difference?. The lineup with one more hitter that they can confidently insert into the #3 spot in the order would change the complexion of the rest of these moves for me. I read this when it came out and really enjoyed it. They usually put out some cool stuff.
  3. Joey Meyer Bombs, you mentioned we were in on Rendon...do you have a link for that?
  4. Do this, then sign Bentances to replace Hader.
  5. Any reason you think that? I think someone is going to give him a 4/110 deal. Just the tea leaves I guess. Rumors last week that the Brewers made a strong play for Rendon. Healy is a (very) poor man's version of Donaldson, so it would stand to reason that he would be a solid back-up plan should Donaldson have injury concerns. Call it a somewhat educated hunch I suppose. Part of me also wonders if they may consider Castellanos at 3B, terrible defense and all. Brewers made a strong play for Rendon? I must have missed that. As long as it wasn't Bob Nightengale making that claim I will believe it. I could see Castellanos. We definitely have the guys to come in as late inning defensive replacements. Start the game with Castellanos, Urias, and Hiura and close it out with Urias, Arcia, and Sogard.
  6. "Stearns says on @MLBNetworkRadio that this isn't a year to take a step back but rather to reconfigure. He said they needed to make incremental upgrades where they could and if they're right on more of these changes than not, they'll be better than last season." - @BrewerNation Upgrades at the margins is so important. Everyone looks for the huge impact signing/acquisition but making incremental improvements is crucial.
  7. Any reason you think that? I think someone is going to give him a 4/110 deal.
  8. I have us at $103m spent. Anybody's guess how much is "available". Based on last year, another $25m or so. But no guarantee they open with a payroll as big as last year. Lineup will be something like Cain - CF Yelich - RF Hiura - 2b Smoak - 1b Garcia/Braun - LF Narvaez - C Urias - 3b Arcia - SS Braun will play some 1b as well. If we sign a 3b or Healy wins a job, Urias probably moves to SS. Sogard is available to fill in at 3b/2b/ss. Gives us a ton of flexibility for mid season acquisitions and another ridiculous September run.
  9. Yeah his BABIP last year was .223, well below his career average of .266. He also had a hard hit rate of 42.7% last year compared to a career average of 35.9%. Very unlucky indeed.
  10. I can't see their value being a whole lot different. I would also rather have Thames.
  11. Okay, lets make this deal and then sign Dellin Betances to replace Hader.
  12. Everyone talking about all this money we have saved up for a larger acquisition but I don't think thats going to happen. Stearns loves his flexibility to add at the deadline. The team in March is going to be much different than the team in July and you never know what kind of needs will arise during the season. So everyone hoping for a large FA addition, don't hold your breath. However, I believe there will still be moves to be made as Sogard is likely (hopefully) not going to be the starting 3B.
  13. His nickname is the Mayor of Dongtown
  14. I think he's supposed to be ready by Spring Training, unless I'm mistaken. I thought it was later but I could be mistaken also. http://m.quickmeme.com/img/fa/fa1ac10c395b0d9d7f88e78cd9381611ef23fd5016c95833240114d062cab874.jpg In all seriousness I was able to find this: Dr. Brian Sennett, chair of Sports Medicine at Penn Medicine, expects Dellin Betances (Achilles) to be ready for spring training. The setup man is officially done for the year after suffering a partial tear of his left Achilles tendon in his season debut Sunday versus the Blue Jays, but he is expected to avoid surgery and will likely be fully healed up with rest and rehab by next February. "Overall prognosis is good and he should be ready for spring training," said Sennett. "Just poor timing to return this year due to the fact that the World Series will be over in approximately six weeks." Betances, 31, is set to become a free agent this offseason.
  15. I think if he were playing at an All-Star level in 2021, they would be happy to pay $12M in 2022 for an All-Star caliber bat. That's my point. It would become a mutual option which Garcia would surely decline if he were playing at that level. Oh duh. My bad.
  16. Not to get too far ahead of things but it would be interesting to see how they handled him in his second year if he were playing at an All-Star level and on pace to be right on the border of 550 PAs. That could have the potential to be ugly if he felt like they were deliberately suppressing his ABs to keep the team option. I think if he were playing at an All-Star level in 2021, they would be happy to pay $12M in 2022 for an All-Star caliber bat.
  17. Yeah that would be great. I just don't think it's in Stearns' DNA to give that much to a reliever.
  18. Weird criteria, no he doesn't. Agreed. Ben Gamel had a .710 OPS as our fourth outfielder last year. Even if Garcia can put up an .800 OPS this deal is worth it. This adds a talented bat while also bringing depth and stability to the OF group. Not to mention the possibility of a breakout season after what he has done in Tampa.
  19. Heyman says we looked into Encarnacion
  20. There has been lots of press around Betances but I saw Jon Heyman said that he is looking for a 1 year deal in the $10m range. He made $7.25 million last year and he is coming off a significant achilles injury so I doubt he gets 1/10. I would love for the Brewers to give him a one year bounce back deal, but if there is anything we know about Stearns, its that he likes to limit his risk in pitching as much as possible. However, when healthy he is a dominant pitcher. Its basically like having a RH Josh Hader: 2018 DB - 66.2 IP / 2.70 ERA / 2.47 FIP / 1.050 WHIP / 15.5 K9 2019 JH - 75.2 IP / 2.62 ERA / 3.10 FIP / 0.806 WHIP / 16.4 K9 What do you think it would take to land him? 1 year $8m?
  21. https://www.mlb.com/news/avisail-garcia-is-one-of-the-most-underrated-free-agents Nice little write up about him from a couple of weeks ago
  22. Alright full time starter, then what happens with Braun? First base but how much?
  23. 1. We will never sign a TOR arm in free agency. It's never going to happen. Ever. The constraints on small market teams is too much to overcome and those guys will always sign with the large markets. 2. Stearns and company have prioritized developing pitching in house. He only took over 4 years ago it takes time. Woodruff has worked out pretty well. 3. We have had prospects to acquire great pitching and that can happen again 4. Every single team wants consistent dominant pitching. Of course we all want a rotation like the nats but they spent hundreds of millions of dollars to get it and that will never happen with us. I really think you need to become a fan of a large market team. This is getting ridiculous that every single post you have turns into this.
  24. I leave the forum for a few hours to watch the Packer game and come back to mayhem about payroll. It's getting a bit annoying that every thread turns into a payroll argument and how the player "isn't good enough" instead of productive discussion with other Brewer fans.
