  1. Absolutely a good move, if that is the market rate. I like the Jones deal better by a wide margin, and that is even taking into consideration the dubious value of second contracts for running backs. Perhaps the general consensus against RB contracts have swung too far in the conservative direction. For a guy who has put up the numbers Jones has to get a contract that isn't even in the top 5 for his position indicates that the market correction on backs is probably approaching its nadir (granted, one should probably take contracts in this weird free agency season with a heaping grain of salt). Linsley is a great player, and was an awesome deal, particularly at his 5th-round draft price and original contract, but unless Turner/Runyan/whoever totally falls on his face in there, I don't think many Packers fans will rue this day.
  2. That has to be writing on the wall that they are moving on from Turner. Neuse is a RHH 3B that would make sense as a platoon partner with Rios. Cody Thomas was on their 40-man as well, so this does free up a spot. I hope so, but I really doubt it. Neuse has two minor league options remaining, so he could just be a nice depth piece for them. And really, if you’re the Dodgers and you’re basically assembling the Monstars of Major League Baseball, are you really going to stop short and opt for Sheldon Neuse over Justin Turner? The juggernaut will only grow, as this is the way of the world now, including baseball. Big is beautiful, apparently. *sigh*
  3. Speaking only for myself, I don’t at all think Tampa was the better team two weeks ago. Their pass rush played better than our offensive line, and that plus two unforced errors (one strongly aided by referee malpractice) was the difference in the game. But our QB played decisively better, and we won the turnover battle and dominated time of possession. Those are all marks of superior teams. But results did not match process, thanks largely to Mike Pettine’s brain fart. So here we are. But I am not disputing Tampa’s front 7, they’re great. But Green Bay was better and should have won that game, and anyone is going to have a hard time convincing me otherwise.
  4. I’ve never been sure if the 2014 team would have beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, I think that’s a toss-up. But I will now go to my grave believing beyond a shadow of a doubt that the 2020 Packers win this game against Kansas City. This really was Rodgers’ last best chance.
  5. Reid’s game plan and Mahomes’ execution have been dog doo-doo. Yeah, so KC is down a couple tackles. It’s the nfl, stuff happens. When they’ve run the ball, they’ve been good, but instead they keep forcing the pass. The shine is coming off the juggernaut tonight in a big way.
  6. The ONLY thing that is keeping me off the ledge as a fan after this decision is the fact that both LaFleur and Hackett have achieved considerably better results in Green Bay than in their previous gigs. But Barry’s track record is another kind of bad compared to those two. To go from Leonhard to this is pretty cringey. But I try to remember I’m just a dude with a phone and a worthless piece of stock on my wall. What do I know?
  7. As someone who cares 1000x more about the Packers than Badgers (which I know is a fairly unique position around here, sorry), I have to say that this disturbs me greatly. Now that Leonhard has declined several opportunities to leave to go to vastly superior programs, it is abundantly clear that he has simply been burnishing his reputation in order to strengthen his position at UW. And I have absolutely no ill will towards him for that choice. If he loves UW, I’m happy for him. But this is not at all a good look for the Packers, an organization that could frankly use a news cycle that helps dispel the all to accurate sense that it is a group that can manage success, but not achieve greatness. Everyone knows that they got stood up by their top choice, who was a homegrown childhood fan no less, which can’t help the brain trust’s reputation. As a result of Leonhard’s decision, the next DC is in the unenviable position of everyone knowing that he did not win the job outright, but by default. At the end of the day, winning fixes everything, so if the D takes a huge step in the next year or two, or the Pack wins a title in that span, then no one will remember this. But if things start to slide on that side of the ball, this will be another stain in the personnel decision area that the org really doesn’t need. I am now a lot more concerned than I would have been if this news had never leaked. But to be fair, it’s not like I was filled with confidence about my team’s direction before this...
  8. Based on what, your own opinion? No, based on science.
  9. I think it is funny that fans can have watched--within the last couple years!--the Brewers trot out the "jumbo package" infield and shift both Mike Moustakas and Travis Shaw to 2nd base, yet find it so unbelievable that they might have Hiura take a meaningful amount of innings at 1B that they insist he must be on the trading block. Now, to be fair, I have absolutely no idea what Stearns is up to, but one thing I do know is that he isn't exactly predictable. When people start to think he absolutely has to make a move, he doesn't. And when things are quiet, he's moving. So if conventional wisdom suggests Hiura is getting shipped out, likely to an AL club, then I start to think the smart money is with Hiura staying put this year and investing in a first baseman's glove. But again, what do I know? Would I be ok with moving him for a haul of prospects? Not thrilled, but I'd get it. Would I be stoked about Hiura as a part of a deal for Chapman or Ramirez or some young starter? Heck yeah. But I'm not holding my breath for either scenario.
  10. Bottom line, the Packers are the second-best franchise of the last ten years. I am as sick as anybody about the missed opportunities, but if the only team doing things better than you is the Belichick-era Patriots, you're still living right. That can be the case, while 2014 and 2020 are both simultaneously unacceptable failures. This is the tension in which the franchise finds itself now. And resolving towards mediocrity is a lot more likely than going the other way.
  11. This all really brings home for me the fact that you can make a super strong case for February 2011-February 2021 being the best decade in Wisconsin sports history... ...and it produced one championship. That is equal parts exciting and humbling.
  12. A trip down memory lane, courtesy of TJ Lang and some dude who will not be named: And to be clear, I am not advocating hatred and threats towards players, but if the guy is going to bring it up...
  13. Well, if we’re now concerned about ensuring the franchise QB stays committed, I start to wonder if Wade Phillips isn’t the guy. I have a vague memory of reading once that Rodgers has respect for him. Honestly, I was kind of hoping the vikes would axe Zimmer and we’d pick him up on the rebound, but that ship (pun very much intended) has sailed.
  14. I think that’s a different question than the one currently being discussed (as Snapper indicated above), but I like the thought experiment and I’ll bite. I admit I was wrong about how much Lazard and MVS would grow this year, but I still think a Tee Higgins makes a couple more plays in this game when it matters. For instance, if you imagine him taking the place of EQ this year, I can imagine him catching that 2 pt conversion, for instance. That's fair. Any other rookies that had big years? Any corners that had big years? Would Chase young have made a difference? Certainly, but to clarify, I limited my choice to players who would have been available to GB at the 26th spot. I guess it’s possible they could have moved up higher, but the price would have been really steep, obviously, and I wouldn’t have put together a package for a top-3 pick for fear of the entire draft class hinging on hitting on that one guy.
  15. I think that’s a different question than the one currently being discussed (as Snapper indicated above), but I like the thought experiment and I’ll bite. I admit I was wrong about how much Lazard and MVS would grow this year, but I still think a Tee Higgins makes a couple more plays in this game when it matters. For instance, if you imagine him taking the place of EQ this year, I can imagine him catching that 2 pt conversion, to name one play.
  16. Who did they need? Who cares, literally anyone besides a backup QB who will either prematurely force someone playing fine out of GB, or never take a snap for them. Would rather have seen a bust DT at that spot. At least that's an attempt. I think if you were to give Gutekunst a crystal ball that told him the Packers team records and player stats from this season, I doubt he drafts Love. And that’s coming from a guy who thinks Gute has to be enamored with Love. The pick does not make sense otherwise. However, no such crystal ball was forthcoming. Rodgers had a relatively pedestrian season in 2019 and the team, for all its strengths, did not seem like it was one 1st round pick away from being a SB team after twice being roadkill in San Francisco and winning a whole heap of one-score games against mediocre competition. So I don’t get the sense of re-litigating the Love pick now. You go to war with the information you have. It’s Rodgers job to believe he’s the man and is ready to win a championship, so I don’t fault him for being upset they drafted his replacement. But I’m not going to rake Gute over the coals for taking the guy he thought was the future at the one position that matters most. There will be plenty of time to do that if and when Love fails.
  17. As per Rodgers comments, I’m not sure all the smoke people think they see is a real fire. Rodgers has sounded kind of cryptic and weird about a lot of things this year, indeed, about life in general. And you know what? A lot of people have been pretty weird this year. Because this year has been bat guano insane on a global level. I think anybody making any huge decisions about their life and career (in Rodgers case) or the fate of the most talented player to ever lace it up for your franchise (Gutekunst) after a hugely emotional failure amidst the most difficult set of circumstances the world is likely to face in a generation would be well served to take a breath for about three months and revisit then. If nothing else, you’d think a couple guys who had front seats for Favre’s late career weepy press conferences would have learned as much. I’ve been wrong about much this season, but I’m still convinced it would take an absolutely stunning turn of events to get Rodgers in another team’s uni next season. I just don’t think it’s going to happen. And a couple sentences from a disappointed superstar isn’t changing the basic underlying fact that you don’t make decisions when you’re emotional. Except for replacing your defensive and special teams coordinators. That gets done amidst a bucket of tears and a bottle of Jack Daniels.
  18. I think it is fascinating that every branch of the much-ballyhooed Shanahan coaching tree is basically a paper tiger. They have tons of regular season wins and no championships. They’re like a bunch of mini pre-2019 Andy Reid’s.
  19. I was just thinking about this comparison today. I think it is quite apt.
  20. If you would have given me those QB stat lines at the outset, I’d have felt like we had this thing well in hand. We just find ways to lose. That is this franchise’s identity now.
  21. Never leave it to the zebras. But that’s a joke.
  22. I’m sure there will be a critical PI on this next drive. Book it.
  23. Agreed, to a point. If Tampa wins by anything less than seven, though, that’s still all on the D. That play to end the half is about as bad as our defense has ever been in the playoffs. They don’t get to complain about a three and out.
  24. Magnum? Blue Steel? HE HAS ONE LOOK!
  25. Yeah, I don’t see blaming Rodgers for this. He isn’t even in the top 10 for the fault list.
