  1. Imo Iglesias is better than Gregorius and Arcia, and will be cheaper than Gregorius. A big upgrade over Arcia. I don't see Stearns even looking at Healy for anything. Healy's last two years: .237/.277 and .237/.289.. Much better options are available. I can't see any team using the 26th spot (IF the limit on pitchers is 13) for a 3rd catcher. A solid pinch hitter would be a much better use of a roster spot. Vogt again struggled throwing the ball, but hit pretty well. If Stearns can't re-sign Grandal, he would be a decent compliment with Pina. Stearns has already intimated that Suter will be used in the pen again. He was as good as anyone in that role and is more valuable there than as a 5th starter.
  2. Is Gomes really any different than Pina? Gomes has a career .297 OBP. Worse than Pina and he made over $7M last year. There are better, cheaper options out there.
  3. Agreed, but I'm not so sure about just cutting Shaw. There might be a team out there willing to take a chance on him that would give up a couple lottery ticket type guys at the least. I don't want to rely on Shaw bouncing back, I just don't think it's a wise move, but signing Moose, and trading Shaw for something is my plan. Big giant NO on Lucroy. That ship has sailed, he is a shell of his former self, and nostalgia should not play a role in building this team. He's gone, he sucks, leave him be... Do we want or need another 4 to 5 inning starting pitcher? CC won't allow a guy like Miley to throw 6 or 7 innings, I want someone who we can throw out there for a 6th or 7th inning, a guy we can trust, and I don't know that CC thinks Miley is that guy. Not to mention, Miley lost his magic the 2nd half last year... Miley only if he can be had cheap. really cheap. I'd be fine with Gibson, but at what cost? Wheeler is severely over rated on this site. His numbers don't impress me to be honest, and he is going to get paid!! Pineda(?) Interesting, but there are risks. I am in favor of bringing Lyles back, this I can get behind, however, again, we really ned a couple guys that can go 7 innings on occasion, is Lyles that guy? Both would be great, but I think Smith is out of our $ range. (Is he a free agent?) I want Pomeranz back, his price also went up due to his strong performance with us To me, Braun should already be penciled in for 50 plus games at 1B in 2020. Platoon him with Thames at 1B and problem solved. Assuming he is willing, and nothing I have seen says differently. Unless they are able to get Encarnacion for a decent price, Braun and Thames are my 1B starting the season. We NEED a TOR starter type to add to Woodruff. There is no doubt we will be looking, but I think we will roll with the usual cast of characters, hoping that Nelson will bounce back. (assuming we keep him) Arcia needs to be replaced, we just can't continue with the hopes that we see 2017 Arcia again, nothing about the last 2 seasons points to that happening. No to Gibson. 4.84 ERA (4.36 FIP). 10 hits and more than 3 walks per 9 IPs. Made over $8M last year. Not much of an upgrade at all. I agree Wheeler is too over-hyped and will be way over-priced for the Brewers. I'd like Lyles re-signed. Pineda brings a significant injury risk and he again is a less than 6 inning pitcher. If Stearns can sign him at a resonable price, he is better than what they have. Miley is really went south quickly starting in August. 62 hits in only 42 IPs. 31 ERs and 18 BBs in those 42 IPs. Maybe if they could get him at the $4M rate?
  4. Who in particular are you thinking of to take Moose's place at 3B? Does a thirdbaseman who is an "on base machine" even exist in FA or the trade market at a price you're looking for?
  5. From what I can see (not including benefits) somewhere in the $97-99M range. That figure includes estimates on arby salaries.
  6. It would depend on the money for either one of those guys. Plus their stats are from an AA or AAA type leagues where few pitchers have the speed they see in the majors. Remember, Arcia had a .347 OBP at AA and a .417 OBP in Colo. Springs. Maybe Mogi or Kim would be better, maybe not. I'd rather they go after Iglesis than Gregorius or either Mogi or Kim.
  7. What is there to reclaim? He's a career .297 OBP guy who is a below average fielder. Maybe a minor lg. contract with a spring training invite.
  8. Castro Ks 1/3 of his ABs and has made $8M the last two years. If he takes a cut it will be in the $6M - $7M range. Either is too much to pay for a backup catcher when pitching is desperately needed. Imo d'Arnaud would be a much better and much cheaper option IF Grandal leaves.
  9. Seager projected to go to $7.1-7.5M in arby and still has an arby 3 year. Price may be an issue especially when you consider the top end prospects it's going to take to get him.
  10. Allen had great minor lg numbers and struggled (small sample) in the big leagues. The Padres would want some good prospects for him. I don't know if he would be the kind of guy Stearns would want to be the backup or even starter until he proves he can hit at the big lg level.
  11. Catcher to go along with Pina is the problem if Grandal leaves. I just don't see them interested in Avila if he gets anywhere close to the $4.5M he is now making. Avila doesn't hit much, but he walks a lot. He also K's at a 33% rate and is a very avg. defensive catcher. The last thing CC needs is another strikeout artist in the lineup. I think there is a better chance of Stearns keeping Nelson at around $3.7M than Anderson at $8.5M. I too think Shaw is gone and they are going to re-sign Moose (3 for $33M?).
  12. I can't speak to Bryant's case specifically, but this tactic by clubs is so common that we all know what it means to "manipulate service time". Players are being held back for financial reasons only. As long as players are bound to one team, simply as a matter of being chosen in a draft, there should be some obligation on the team's part to promote them to MLB whenever they are ready. Instead, players are being held back a week or (in Bryant's case) a day, just to force a discount on future salary. He was in every way a major league caliber player while the Cubs had him on ice as he was when he debuted. Whether that's a legal case, I don't know. But he was legally bound to a team not willing to pay him his worth, and that's a matter worth pursuing. Be careful when saying a "major league caliber player" because it's in the eye of the beholder. Who is the judge for minor leaguers? Can an outside source force a team to promote a minor leaguer? Remember, for every player promoted another has to be cut. If the Dodgers have 4-5 major league caliber players in the minors and 26 major league caliber players on the 26-man roster, what are they to do? If that player who is cut is also determined to be a major league caliber player what do you do? A gigantic can of worms is being opened when a source other than the club can say who is and who isn't major league caliber.
  13. Unlike some clubs (Pirates, Reds, Brewers, Royals, etc...) the Cubs have the money to buy just about any FA they want. Plus they have the cash to re-sign their own players if they so choose and to take on huge contracts for players rebuilding teams are trying to get off the books. I don't see them being in the dumpster fire catagory.
  14. The thing that scares me about Vogt is his -27, -13 , -10 defense the last 3 years he played. Weakest arm in all MLB. Not many teams run much now days, but still a big weakness behind the plate. Freitas isn't on the radar for the Crew next year except as an AAA catcher again. He is a prime candidate to be cut from the 40-man roster to make room for the rule 5 guys they are going to keep.
  15. I think Albers is definitely gone so that's one open spot. They can remove Freitas-Saladino-Austin and that's 4 spots. Plus Faria and Black are out of options but on the 40-man roster. Besides Knebel and Wahl they also have rule 5 guys: Ray-Brown-Erceg-Fryereisan-Webb to make decisions on early next year.
  16. Thanks, I completely missed that part of the rule. In that case, position versatility is clearly lessened. If you were already carrying 13 pitchers, as teams like the Brewers were, then the added spot having to be a position player means less use for players like Perez. You can essentially replace his position coverage with 2 players and thus may as well go for better bats. Nothing has been decided yet. Many mgrs want the 14th pitcher, especially in the AL. Some talk of 13 pitchers and guys like Lorenzen being a hybrid. Then there's the question of what makes a hybrid. A lot yet to be determined. The new 15 day minimum demotion may play a role in the decision too.
  17. Because w/o either of them it leaves the Brewers' offense the weakest in the NL Central and one of the bottom 3-4 in the NL. It would leave two gaping holes in the order and nobody to fill them.
  18. Junior Guerra isn't going anywhere. He had a very nice season. Guerra is going to make between $3.5-4M in arby. It depends on other re-signs to see if he's worth the money. He did have a very good year and bringing him back would help solidify the pen.
  19. Good AAA numbers, but poor MLB (only 90+ IPs) numbers. He seems like a last guy in the pen type. Probably not going to make the 26-man roster unless they can keep 14 pitchers and then only if Wahl-Black-Burnes and others fail in spring training.
  20. There are at least three reasons why the Brewers wouldn't make your deal. 1. Whitley was horrendous at AAA last year and has not proved anything other than he may be a good prospect. Much like what the Brewers have in Brown. Great until he moved up to AAA, then struggled mightily. 2. Even Houston is questioning Tucker's swing and defense. 3. Correa is a great player, but he has had lower back, thumb, and hamstring injuries already. At 25 he has already missed considerable time with injuries and only 2 more years of control.
  21. I'm not the GM of the Philadelphia Phillies. But what I see from the numbers is a decent option at short with excellent OBP skills. Hernandez will be 30 in May and hasn't played SS since 2017. He has started exactly 11 games at SS since 2014. None in 2017-2018-2019. He would have to be a non-tender by the Phils and a cheap signing by Stearns. Arcia would have to be kept around if his defense was below average.
  22. Problem is the Brewers then have perhaps the weakest defensive infield in MLB. Who plays third in 2021? The pen is extremely weakened for 2020 and no money to add a starting pitcher. Gray is a year or two away. It's like you're throwing 2020 away and banking on Turner's and Braun's salaries coming off the books for 2021.
  23. You have that backward on Taylor. Taylor came up as an infielder and played there exclusively until 2017. He's a pretty good outfielder too though, as we unfortunately witnessed against the Brewers in the 2018 NLCS. If the Brewers pursued a trade for him I'd assume it would be as their primary shortstop, not a utility player. I was looking at how the Dodgers used him and his career ratings at positions. Plus rating for OF play and negative ratings for every infield position.
  24. He'll probably end up signing a minor lg. deal or a low cost MLB deal. I wouldn't be surprised if Stearns offered him $1M to stay. Not a big loss if he goes.
  25. LaMehieu also is making $12M this year and next. Too much for the Crew especially when Hiura was coming up sometime this year.
