  1. You have Bumgarner with a buyout added to the end. That increases yearly to $15M. Extensions at more money are still increased payroll. Plus you forget the arby guys who are going to get increases.
  2. What are you figuring for the team's salary? About $155M? Probably closer to $140-$145 million. Some of the FA deals go up, but at the same time, deals like Shaw, Albers, and Nelson come off the books. That roughly covers the Bumgarner deal. The re-signings are about 1-2 million over option years or 2019 salaries each. The big jump are the Mogi and Kim deals - but if you look over their BR pages, they're well worth the money. Grandal : your scenario $17.5/$16M now = +1.5M....Moustakas $10M/$7M = +$3M....Pomeranz $4M/$1.5M = +$2.5M.....Lyles $5M/$2M - +$3M.... Gio $4.5M/$2M = +$2.5M...... Yelich $20M/$10M = +$10M .... Thames $10M/$7M = +$3M.... Bumgarner + $15M..... Mogi +$5.5M..... Kim +$4.5M ..... Total additions w/o arby increases $51.5M. Total subtractions around $15.5M. Assuming the payroll this year was around $125M that would up the payroll to $161M plus the arby costs to players eligible. Final payroll would be somewhere around $167M-$170M under your scenario.
  3. In 2019 Burnes was NOT excellent in AAA. If anything he was also a dumpster fire there too. 1-5 W/L - 8.46 ERA - 29 hits in only 22 IPs - 21 ERs - WHIP 1.70. Demoted to AA ball. I think after his last performance he starts the year in AAA as a starter and they go from there. I believe Nelson has a better chance of bouncing back than does Burnes. Houser had his ups and downs, but showed enough promise to start the year as a starter. Hopfully Stearns re-signs Lyles and/or adds a FA starter. Otherwise the stating staff is once again extremely weak after Woodruff.
  4. What are you figuring for the team's salary? About $155M?
  5. I'd love to get Lyles back on a decent contract. I don't know if Ryu is going to be too expensive. Nova, even on a cheap deal, is a big no. 4.98 FIP, gave up 225 hits to 187 IPs, 1.455 WHIP. The White Sox kept him because they had nobody else and they knew they were going nowhere anyways.
  6. Why would the Brewers even have the slightest thought of Seager who was Arcia type horrible in 2018 and not very good this year (.239/.321 and a 3B)? Assume $38M and lose prospects just to get Murphy? No thanks. They'd be better off just trying to get Murphy or a FA catcher and re-sign Moose.
  7. Well, in a "defense doesn't matter" line-up that I'd like to see, but which I know we'd never see for Opening Day 2020 against the C*bs... lf: Grisham 2b: Hiura rf: Yelich c: Grandal ss: Moustakas 3b: Braun 1b: Thames cf: Cain p: Woodruff Find the hole in THAT lineup. I think the overly obvious hole is the infield defense. Probably the worst defensive INF. in modern history. To me Grisham still has to prove he's an every day player, much less a lead-off hitter. Taylor would deserve a good look too.
  8. Hamels made over $20M last year and I doubt Stearns wants any part of that type money. Yeah... hard pass. Rather have Gio for two years, $10 million TOTAL. Plus there's Suter, I'd be more inclined to go with Cam Roegner, coming off an injury-marred season than Cole Hamels. I don't think Roegner is anywhere close to MLB ready. He was very mediocre at AA last year and needs to prove something at AAA. IMO Stearns offers Gio 2yrs. $5-6M total. He's a 3-4 inning pitcher and not worth much more at this stage in his career. However, I'd still like to see the Brewers re-sign him for insurance purposes.
  9. Hamels made over $20M last year and I doubt Stearns wants any part of that type money.
  10. Wasn't just the Cards that had issues with Acuna, but also his own teammates (not because of of the HR trot, but the long single): https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/04/sport/braves-teammates-call-out-ronald-acuna-jr-for-lack-of-hustle/index.html Yes, the HR pose is fun (I still contend that Reggie Jackson invented it - at least the modern version) and MLB definitely needs to allow that kind of fun in the game to draw younger viewers (and I think they do). However, it seems anyone who get's upset by those types of antics is labeled as as a "Get off my lawn", "holier than thou", baseball purist that doesn't know how to have fun. Sometimes these antics are ill-timed and come across as selfish and more about ego than about helping your team win and being smart about playing the game. Acuna had a great night at he plate, but clearly some of his teammates feel he could use some maturity. He is young, so hopefully that will come and he'll learn when to pose and when to hustle. The HR pose is for one purpose, to bring attention to yourself! The "fun" is watching 'all for myself' players like Acuna when he does his pose and the ball doesn't go out. Last night he may have cost the Braves the game.
  11. Justin Verlander may very well win the Cy Young and led the league in HRs given up. Hader has an elite fastball with movement. You don't think that the entire season the strategy was "Sit on his fastball and tee off on it."? Hader has now given up hits at the lowest rate ever for any pitcher with over 100 innings pitched. This idea that guys are "sitting on the fastball" and teeing off on it is ludicrous. Verlander did not lead the AL in HRs given up, but he was tied for 2nd. Every team's strategy against Hader is sit on the fastball and hope the slider is nonexistent. The only way batters hit the bombs against him is they look for the FB and start their swing early. That's why he gets so many Ks. When he can throw the slider for strikes, he is almost unhittable.
  12. Rios is a DH. He's a butcher at 1B and much worse in the OF and 3B. No thanks. Santana stunk in AAA last year and has to prove he's even close to MLB material. Ruis is one of the top catching prospects, but not worth Hader.
  13. If Moose is gone who do the Brewers have to play 3B? Shaw is a disaster and nothing he has shown says he will return to form any time soon. There is absolutely nothing on the farm at 3B and nothing remotely close to Moose in the FA pool that is as affordable as he is. If Grandal goes they at least have Pina. If Moose goes they have nothing.
  14. That's a good point, so what does the depth chart look like now, if Lyles and Gonzalez are gone? Not a lot of depth. Woodruff Davies Houser Anderson Nelson Suter Burnes Peralta Wilkerson Supak Brown Wilkerson and Burnes are not options. Burnes looked horrible and needs to prove something in AA or AAA. Wilkerson was beyond terrible in the majors and was dfa'd so he too is out. Brown looked pathetic in AAA, so I don't see him as any type option either. Supak too looked terrible in AAA, but good in AA. I don't see him being anywhere near MLB ready next year. That doesn't leave much so hopefully Gio and Lyes are re-signed and Stearns finds some way to get another pitcher.
  15. Situational hitting has been a big problem for this team for a while now. Or inability to get a hit with RISP or just putting the ball in play with less than 2 outs and a runner at 3rd has killed us this year and is why we lost the division IMO. We strike out too much and not make pitchers work. Contrary to popular opinion, I think Stearns has a good chance to re-sign Grandal to something like 3 for $48-49M (more than the 3 for $44M he turned down). I believe 3 for $33M get Moose back. If Nelson looks good in spring, he should be in the rotation with Gio as the alternative. Burnes once again looked horrible in his last outing and should start in AA or AAA as a starter. Peralta has become an every 3rd day pen guy. Houser has shown enough (certainly not great by any means, but enough) to get another chance at the rotation. Anderson is a low end option and should be dealt if they re-sign Lyles. Anderson is scheduled to make $8.5M and that money could be used better elsewhere. Shaw is history if Moose is re-signed and Perez is too expensive for what he brings to the team. None of those three will bring much, but it is money that could be used elsewhere. Austin also brings little or nothing and is gone. I'd like to see Stearns get Neil Walker (.261/.344) for $2M-$3M. He's a SW and can play 1B or 3B for either Thames or Moose. Imo the big thing Stearns has to do is somehow get another starter who's better than Davies or Anderson.
  16. Hader chokes again!! 8th blown save including the two most important games of the year. Grisham pukes in RF to allow the winning run. The Brewers didn't deserve the win and obviously didn't get it. CC should get the mgr. of the year for getting as far as they did with what he had to work with. Next year!
  17. It just tells you how silly any type WAR "stat" is. It depends on whose WAR "stats" you believe and is calculated differently by different sources. Meaningless.
  18. I'm not sold on Grisham yet. He also struggles to make contact and his .231BA is nothing to write home about. I think Gamel is a better OF, but may be more expensive. A toss up right now.
  19. Grandal's role next year and beyond if he stuck with Brewers would shift more to 1B as it did after the Aguilar trade. Feliciano could be ready by 2021, and Thames has just one more year of control. Feliciano is an interesting prospect catcher. Brewers are very concerned with his Ks and his blocking low pitches. Almost 32% Ks at A+ is alarming. He hit in the .270s, but has to improve as he moves up. He seems to be a better prospect than Henry. Nottingham seems to have a ceiling as a low level back-up, so they need to look deeper.
  20. I think you have drastically under estimated how much the cubs have already committed for 2020. They have over $150M committed to 14 players and that doesn't include Almora, Contreras (arby1), Baez (arby2 eligible/current salary $5.2M) - Schwarber(arby2 eligible/ current salary $3.4M) and Bryant (arby3 eligible/ current salary $13M). They also have Bach in the minors making $5M. With those guys the cubs payroll will easily be in the $190's.
  21. Castro last played SS in 2015 and was horrible at short. He is also scheduled to make over $11M (if re-signed). He had an OBP of .296 this year. No option at all.
  22. Imo Stearns will not go anywhere close to $155M next year. There is nobody going to take Cain's contract, even with $12 added. He is owed $51M over the next 3 years and nobody would even consider him unless the Brewers paid at least half ($25.5M) his salary to take him. Especially with all the injuries he's had this year and his age. CC won't keep 3 catchers. Freitas will again be in AAA or with yet another team next year. You see how much the Brewers think of Freitas when Pina got hurt. He didn't catch an inning and was used as an early PH only. They have little or no use for him other than a minor league fill-in. $6M for Gio is way too much. He made $2M this year and there is little demand for a 3-4 inning starter. Maybe $3M at best to bring him back. I too think Perez is gone and Shaw will be used as part of a pkg. in a trade. Re-signing Moose is priority 1. I think you're a little high with Lyle's salary, but Pomeranz could command maybe that much with his showing out of the pen this year.
  23. I don't know much about him. The offensive numbers are good. He's more of a utility guy that an every day short stop based on his defensive metrics at SS though. Overall I think the Brewers need to add a SS with a higher floor than Arcia. His hitting is just unacceptable when you can add a guy like Mercer, Galvis or Iglesias on a small deal. That doesn't mean you need to non-tender Arcia. He still has an option left and I can't imagine his arbitration salary is much more than like $1.5mm. Not a huge fan of Mercer because of his age. He'll be 34 next year and making aroung $6M. Galvis OBP .296 not much of an improvement and a negative defensive SS. Iglesais is the only one of the three that seems viable with defense and with the stick.
  24. IF Stearns re-signs Moose I think Shaw will be part of a trade to get another starter. Shaw may intrigue somebody like the Rangers who need a 3B and have both Lynn and Minor who would help the Crew.
  25. I will go off this one Pitchers Locks - Woodruff, Lyles, Hader, Pomeranz, Suter, Guerra, Houser Near Locks - Peralta Battling for the last four spots - Gio, Anderson, Davies, Albers, Jackson, Black, Claudio Hitters Locks - Grisham, Cain, Braun, Gamel, Moose, Arcia, Huira, Thames, Grandal, Pina Near Locks - Spangenberg, Perez Maybe Options - Austin, Taylor, Shaw With the reality of how little real depth we have at the hitting spots I guess I could see us carrying 13 pitchers and only 12 bats. I dont see how Albers makes it at this point. That would leave 6 pitchers for 4 or 5 spots. That is going to be a tough call. Will Claudio's only being able to pitch to lefties keep him off? Anderson seems like the perfect piggy back starter when you look at his numbers. I think you are spot-on with the exception of Peralta and Spangenberg. IMO they are locks and Perez makes it because of the need for INF. defense with Hiura being limited. With the starters only going 4-5 innings, I think CC keeps 13 pitchers. Claudio and Jackson make it easily and I think Davies is the 3rd starter. The final two spots is between Anderson-Gio-Albers-Black. For some reason CC seems to love Albers so he's probably on the roster. Tough call with the remaining three for the final two spots.
