  1. I'd like to see a more good outings from Burnes before I would start jumping on the band wagon. He has been awful the entire year and I would need to see a lot more before I would put him on the post season roster much less bring him into a game changing situation.
  2. Thames isn't that bad, especially at #6-7. Right now he is 11th among all 1B in MLB in OBP and OPS. He is 18th in HRs with 200 less ABs than most first basemen. Not a bad option for next year. I agree that Stearns must re-sign Moose and Grandal before even considering Cole. I would definately rather have both Moose (.260/.330 35 HRs -85 RBI), Grandal, and another player rather than sign Rendon for the same money. Arcia needs to be replaced.
  3. If it came down to re-signing Grandal and Moose OR getting Cole, the offense wins easily. Cole is good, but once every 5 days. Moose and Grandal offer a lot more day in and day out.
  4. Imo Stearns needs to add a starting pitcher who can go more than 4-5 innings. Gio-Davies-Anderson all are 4-5 inning guys. Houser needs to show more as a starter and I think Burnes remains in AAA to begin the season until he proves he can pitch. Suter does a great job in long relief and could start on occasion if needed. With the new 3 batter rule I wonder how much value Stearns will see in Claudio? Wahl is an unknown in the pen. He could be outstanding or a dud, who knows? Anderson is scheduled to make $8.5M in 2021 and $9.5 in 2021 and I question if he is worth that. I think he is a prime trade candidate, although Stearns won't get a whole lot for him.
  5. The trade would be predicated on Stearns re-signing Moose. Davies has become a 4-5 inning pitcher. FIP 4.68. Arby is going to be somewhere around $5M. Shaw has little value if Moose is re-signed and is also arby eligible ($4,675,000 now and proably going to be around $6M). Lynn is a 6+ inning guy with a FIP of 3.24.. $11M in 2020 and $9M in 2021. Rather than look at Odorizzi and pay in excess of $11M, I thought Lynn would be a nice alternative and cost effective.
  6. Rendon is probably a better fit than Moustakas going forward but I believe a Rendon signing would take up the majority of the Brewers off season budget and they won't be able to add a starting pitcher and at least one relief pitcher. I would rather go Odorizzi, Swarzak/Betances and Moustakas as I believe that brings in more value than just signing Rendon. If the Brewers wanted to push the budget a bit further they could go Odorizzi, Wheeler, Swarzak/Betances and Moustakas. Adding both Odorizzi and Wheeler would be a nice top of the rotation with Woodruff and that leaves only the #4 spot which Davies could occupy and then the #5 spot which you have Burnes, Peralta, Brown, Lyles, Anderson and others to fill. I just don't see Rendon or Cole as being options for the Brewers. Rendon I see going to the White Sox and Cole going to the Yankees. I would like to see Stearns look to add Lance Lynn. Davies, Shaw, and Supak should be more than enough to get him. Woodruff, Lynn, Lyles, Houser, Nelson, Gio, Anderson not too bad a staff. Suter, Pealta, Hader, Pomeranz (re-signing him), Knebel, Wahl, Black, D. Williams, Jackson, maybe Claudio, and outside shot of Burnes is enough to pick from in the pen.
  7. Unless Yelich extends with the Crew... and he may well do that. That is a question for after 2020. After this year, the moves are obvious: Keep Moose, Grandal, Gio, Pomeranz, and Lyles. DFA Saladino, Freitas, Austin, Jay Jackson, and Taylor Williams. Trade Ben Gamel and Arcia for prospects. Shaw gets spring training to get it together, but he is on a short leash. He'll back up 3B, 2B, 1B, LF, RF. Who plays SS if Arcia is traded? He won't bring much for prospects and Gamel won't bring anything. I like your keepers except Gio. He's all but washed-up and of little value. Anderson has also become a 4 inning pitcher. Stearns needs to find some pitching in the off season. Any combination of Davies, Anderson, Shaw, Ray, Supak, Nelson, Peralta, and Burnes can be used in a trade to get somebody decent.
  8. You can't just make Cain's salary disappear. I also don't think this adds up to $135 even if you can remove Cain, but I am not here to calculate that right now. Payroll going into next year ~ 105 million. Including every tendered contract. Shaw ~ 5, Davies ~ 5, Arcia ~ 3, Guerra ~2, Anderson 8.5, Cain 17 Nelson ~ 5 = 45. Eat 9 million on Cain then to rid. Payroll now at 144. Which is basically the same as this year profit wise with the 2 tv increases, local and National. Funny how that worked out. I’d be disappointed if this team didn’t win the World Series. Donaldson has said numerous times he wants a multi-year contract and the Braves are already talking to him about multiple years. Better money spent if Stearns re-signs Moustakas at somewhere around 3 for $33M. Grandal for somewhere around 3 for $46M. Guerra is already making OVER $2M and is arby eligible. You see what CC thinks of Freitas. He will not make the team coming out of spring training. IF Grandal re-signs, Pina will be the backup catcher. Burnes has been so bad he will start the season in AAA and Rasmussen will be there too as a starting pitcher. Gio is washed-up and I doubt Stearns wants a 4 inning starter.
  9. Pretty much comes down to him still being a AAAA level catcher when he faces mlb pitching, probably. Here's hoping he stays hot and provides some meaningful hits down the stretch, and he becomes a viable option as 2nd catcher on the 2020 roster after Grandal likely leaves. Rooting for the guy to do well, but being realistic on how much he is actually going to play - if they felt he was a better option than what they had on the mlb roster on aud 31st, he would have been up long ago. I think we saw how much the organization thinks of Freitas' catching ability. Playing Grandal behind the plate in a day game following a night game and using Thames at 1B against a lefty shows that CC has no vision of using Freitas behind the plate in a very meaningful game. Maybe tomorrow agains the Marlins Freitas plays and Grandal rests.
  10. I was hoping Stearns could sign Jose Iglesias and hope he is the bridge to Turang.
  11. Taylor didn't do all that well at San Antonio compared to others, .269/.334. They called him up because they can have the entire 40 man roster up, but he really hasn't shown enough to warrent a roster spot in the majors.
  12. The pen is not garbage. It has 7+ good options of the 13 that are presently in it. Unfortunately, the wrong 2 were used. Who are your 7+ GOOD options for CC, especially in the 5th inning? Guerra has been pretty good but CC was probably saving him for the 7th & 8th. Hader has been very good since he found his slider, but Hader isn't going to throw 4 innings. Claudio has been great, but he's a LOOGY and he pitched. Pomeranz has been one of the top three guys out there and he got bombed. Faria got rocked. Black has control problems, Nelson allowed 2 hits and a WP. Hindsight is always 20/20. If CC threw Peralta or any other pitcher and he too got rocked you would have been all over him for using that guy in that situation. There is nobody else in the pen that was any better option than what CC used.
  13. I don't see a "ridiculous imbalance of lefty hitters". If the lineup is healthy, Braun-Cain-Hiura-Grandal (SW)-Arcia are all RH. Yellich hits everybody so that leaves only Thames and Moose as the imbalance. With Grandal going to 1B and Pina catching against lefties, that leaves only 3B an area of concern. Granted their best lineup is with Thames and Moose and I agree there is an imbalance when injuries to Cain and Braun happen.
  14. The Brewer arson squad reared it's ugly head once again tonight. Horrible time for Jackson-Albers-Pomeranz to turn to crap. It seems that the bullpen is either great or ugly. Another loss to the cubs and you can kiss the season good-bye. Great DP by Arcia and Spangenberg. Nelson 2 hits, WP, but a scoreless inning was good to see. I'm still not sure what Stearns' plans for Nelson.
  15. His salary demands might be more than Stearns is willing to pay for a part-time, one position player. Perfect AL player who can play a little 1B and DH. But I think you're right about the Sox re-signing him. Everything I've read says they like his leadership and his bat.
  16. Who don't you think will make the 2020 pen? I think Pomeranz is very likely to go along with Hader. If the don't re-sign Pomeranz the Claudion will be the other lefty. Suter and one of the starters will be the long men. IF Knebel comes back healthy and throwing well he's in. Jackson has been terrific since he returned and is a low cost option. Black has shown promise and they can't send him down w/o losing him. I agree Faria is a long shot, so is Burnes. D. Williams, Peralta, and Wahl. I see at least 10 better options than JJ next year, unless he regains his fastball and splitter and comes a whole lot cheaper.
  17. And, this is my biggest concern. As much as I hate the Cubs - and want to see us win as many games as possible from them, I'd almost rather see us lose 3/4 this weekend than to split this series. Splitting this series will do nothing for us. Yes, we'll have a very small percentage of hope remaining, but I just don't see any way we are going to make up 4 games with 20 games to play, especially when none of those remaining games are against the Cubs. As others have already noted - our season basically comes down to these 4 games this weekend. Need to win 3/4 to keep hope alive. Anything less than that, and you can stick a fork in this season. I won’t deny these aren’t important games. But, if we split the series it’s not over. Remember the Cubbies play the Cards 7 more times. And Hiura should be back for the last 2 weeks, and Woody the last week at least. I wouldn’t be surprised if we win our last 10 games if needed. The Crew also trail the Phils and the D'backs, so they too have to lose for the Brewers to gain ground. The Mets are 1/2 game back and they have to be accounted for. We have to hope this weekend goes really well and the Cards take at least 4 from the cubs. No matter what, the Crew has to go on a significant winning streak to have any chance.
  18. I think I would put Jackson in the good catagory. Since July 14 when he came back up: 18 IPs - 6 ERs (3 in one game) - 7 BBs - 30 Ks. He has done well in all type of situations. I would say Burnes and T. Williams are about as wild as a wild card could be. Faria has shown nothing in a small sample with the Crew. If Black could ever control his FB he could be outstanding. Let's hope Nelson has regained his FB and is a lot better than the first time.
  19. I was admittedly very high on Smoak as a deadline rental, his batted ball profile really took a nose dive the last month before the deadline though. I didn't even think about the 26th man, that makes it way easier to have a roster spot for someone to strict platoon with Thames. My first thoughts were Braun, Hiura, or a catcher to play 1b against LHP. For Hiura, we'll likely find a better version of Perez to compete with Arcia for starting SS...the loser becomes a utility guy that could play 2b vs LHP(If Arcia is not a starter, he's probably always playing SS when in the game with the starting SS moving to 2b in this case...but you generally get the idea). We could always look at someone like Todd Frazier to play some 3b and 1b, maybe not specifically him but a 3b/1b combo. Lots of options. I was thinking more along the lines of Neil Walker. A swith hitter who can play 1B-3B-2B (in a pinch). He hit in Milwaukee before and would only be about $2M or so to sign. Nice bench player along with Spangenberg. I wonder if Stearns is looking at Iglesais to fill the SS spot. Good #2 or #7-8 hitter and very good defense. He'd be a nice upgrade at SS with the bat.
  20. I think Pomeranz has looked good as a reliever, not a starter. He would be in the reliever as a Brewer and a nice lefty combination to go with Hader for next year. This would be a good time to talk 2 yr. deal with him.
  21. He’s slumping, that’s all. He’s also young and needs to play every day, which he should be doing. Even as bad as he’s been lately, he’s working the count, occasionally getting on via the bb. He’ll hit, if he plays. He's not slumping until he proves he can actually hit major lg. pitching. A slump would mean he has hit at a high level and now is going through a tough time. So far he has shown only weak results, but in only 90 ABs so the jury is still out.
  22. Hadar, Claudio, and Guerra seemed to have found their magic again. Hadar has control of the slider, Guerra the splitter, and Claudio his location. Albers and Pomeranz have been ok too. I think it comes down to Black, Peralta or Nelson, and Faria. Can they give CC some meaningful innings and keep the Crew in games. Time will tell.
  23. Two consecutive shutouts in the cubs home park where they usually play very well. Who woulda thunk?? Wouldn't it be great if the Crew overcame the Cubs for the second WC and listen to their fans moan and cry the entire off season!
  24. I agree. Stokes was their #20 prospect. He's a 40 hit and 40 arm guy who tops out at maybe a 5th OF. No loss if somebody else picks him up.
  25. If Knebel and Wahl come back healthy they are probably in. Black and Faria are out of options so one or both have to be kept or the Brewers lose them. Brewers probably keep at least one other lefty (Pomeranz or Claudio) to go with Hadar. Suter as one long man and Guerra (if re-signed), or Lyles, Anderson, Houser, Nelson, (possible long shots Burnes or Peralta) which ever one doesn't start, as the other long man. Throw in D. Williams (if he can find another pitch) and possibly Albers and that doesn't leave much room for Jeffress.
