  1. We'd still have Broxton and Phillips for depth, which is still pretty excellent. I'm not sure of many teams that would have those two guys forced into AAA the way we do.
  2. Interesting lineup today: Thames (1B), Yelich (CF), Braun (LF), Shaw (DH), Santana (RF), Arcia (SS), Pérez (3B), Bandy ©, Sogard (2B), Davies (P) Basically swapping Thames (and his .382 OBP vs. righties) into the leadoff spot for Cain. Could work well against tough righties when they want to give Cain a day off.
  3. [sarcasm]I guess we should just get rid of him if that ends up being the best way to get guys in the lineup[/sarcasm]
  4. I'd argue (based on solely batting splits, because obv defense throws a wrench into this) Cain may be getting pinched more than people think. 2016/17 Splits: [pre]vs. LHP ------- LF Yelich .276/.329/.390/.719 CF Cain .315/.377/.525/.902 RF Santana .295/.394/.514/.909 1B Braun .310/.387/.563/.950 BN Thames .182/.270/.394/.664 vs. RHP ------- LF Braun .283/.341/.501/.843 CF Yelich .295/.387/.485/.872 RF Santana .262/.350/.476/.826 1B Thames .265/.382/.551/.933 BN Cain .289/.346/.399/.745[/pre] Again, I don't think Cain is actually going to flat out sit against righties, in fact I'm sure he'll be out there 80+% of the time still because of his D, but I think Cain, Braun, and Santana will all get their share of rest there. And against lefties, you may see Yelich sit here and there in favor of someone like Aguilar (if he makes the team) or even Perez (.295/.319/.469/.788 vs. LHP past two seasons). In all, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out because Braun, Yelich, Santana, and Cain are everyday starters on almost every team regardless of pitcher, and Thames should be in there everyday against righties. So everyone's going to feel the squeeze unless something changes.
  5. I think we're probably just going to have to agree to disagree on all this, but it's not choosing Aguilar over Phillips, it's choosing Thames over Phillips. Braun (and his ZiPS projected OPS+ of 122) is playing near everyday if he's healthy whether that's in a corner outfield spot (with Thames and his projected 125 OPS+ taking most of the time at 1st) or at 1st (with Phillips and his projected 87 OPS+ getting most of the time in RF). In the longrun, yes, I can see Braun at 1st and Phillips being a nice piece of the outfield everyday, but we're talking about this year. If Santana was moved this offseason I don't think Braun plays a single inning at first this Spring.
  6. Link? Just curious how he had worded that, I don't recall ever hearing anything from him that made it seem like a move was likely until after the Cain/Yelich acquisitions and being open to moving positions is a far cry from the organization planning around making him move to a position he's never played before. Speculation does not equal evidence. You seem to fill in a lot of gaps in your knowledge about what's going on behind the scenes with some strangely strong assumptions on your part. I haven't had any sense that the organization prefers moving Braun to first base. In fact they have made several acquisitions in Thames, Aguilar, and Choi the past year and change to fill that position rather than moving him there. Recent comments from Braun have also suggested that this move to first is only while the roster necessitates. It seems like a stretch to assume he wouldn't go back to a more natural position if the outfield allowed for it. I also just don't agree that having Phillips in RF and Braun/Thames at 1st would be a better option than Braun in LF/RF and Thames/Aguilar at 1st if those became our options. Phillips as the 4th OF at any of the three positions as needed would be fantastic, I just don't think he's proven he's ready to just take an everyday job yet if Santana were to be moved.
  7. I also wish there was a way to keep Aguilar on the roster, but it's really hard to argue that a Thames/Braun platoon isn't an improvement over Thames/Aguilar. With their splits, we could be getting a ton of production out of first this year. It feels weird because there will always be a border-line all-star level player on the bench with this team, but between upgrading to Thames/Braun at first and going from Braun/Broxton/Santana/Brinson to Yelich/Cain/Santana/Braun in the outfield, this team is loaded. LET THE SEASON BEGIN!
  8. 2019? May well see that at the end of 2018. Expecting both Burnes and Woodruff in June. Woodruff possibly sooner. Nelson who knows... we need him 3 days ago. So by July, we expect Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Woodruff, and Burnes available for the rotation and Nelson due for his return at some point (not to mention the possible reemergence of Guerra or the continued success of Suter). Really I wouldn't be surprised if Cobb/Lynn ended up pitching better or worse than any of those guys by the end of the season. I can see why DS didn't see either of them as "moving the needle" moves that he needed to make. Now legitimately considering starting Miley over those guys... I don't understand that still, but the way things turned out with his injury, I don't mind him as a possible 9th starter depth move.
  9. Completely agree you can't hold some of what actually happened against DS and there's way too much going on behind the scenes that we're not privy to to be able to suggest anything was actually on the table with any certainty. I'm more just curious what people "wish" had happened differently. I think it'll be fun to look back and see which armchair GMs on this board had the best crystal balls going into the season
  10. It's been a crazy offseason on many fronts, but once the Yelich/Cain acquisitions happened the entire board has gone into overdrive wanting to complete whatever that supposedly started. The ensuing conversations/arguments/cat fights on what the Brewers should or shouldn't do have never been louder and more passionate. With that said, it's going to be interesting to see how the season plays out and which of our favorite (or most disliked) trade and free agent suggestions would have actually worked out for the best. So if you could have forced the Brewers to make one more move this offseason that they didn't make, what would it be? There were a lot of ideas thrown around from re-signing Walker to bringing back Lucroy, but for me, it has to be something to improve the rotation. I think it would be easiest for me to just say they should waved a magic money wand and signed Darvish, but regardless of his current injury status, I think I have to go with the deal that made too much sense to actually ever happen: To Milwaukee: Danny Salazar To Cleveland: Domingo Santana It just felt like this was the move that was supposed to happen after we overloaded the outfield and it never materialized. Maybe the injury popped up just before a deal went through, or the Indians up'd what they wanted in return thinking they could swindle DS once he *had* to move an outfielder, or it was just never in the works in the first place, but I still would have liked to see how that move would have balanced out this team this year. What's the one move you wish would have happened?
  11. I believe I read that they count the average salary of the entire contract against the threshhold to prevent teams from avoiding it with lopsided deals. Can anyone confirm what the rules are in that regard?
  12. On paper I agree, but, 1.) we don't need to compete with the Cubs to get into the playoffs, and 2.) I would have said the same thing going into last year and look how close that was. You never know. I was hoping to solidify the rotation a little more this offseason, but it may end up being more prudent waiting to see what we've got going into the trade deadline. There were a lot of players that overachieved expectations last year and if they fall back to Earth, I doubt a Cobb or even Arrieta would have made a difference in 2018, which would make them a waste of money since both could be #3-5 guys by the time the team is actually ready to compete. However, if the talent is looking real, I think Stearns is more apt to make another big "Yelich"-esque splash for the rotation at the deadline. Someone with higher upside, more controllable years, and less cost than a free agent would have been. If some combo of Anderson/Davies/Chacin/Woodruff are looking legit, we add a big arm, and Nelson comes back strong, we should be in a good position to make a push. And if we still end up missing the playoffs by a game because we didn't sign Cobb to start the year, we've got a nice 3-4 year window to work in still and an extra 4/$60 to spend elsewhere next offseason.
  13. Can't wait until we're a month into the season and he makes his first miscue and we get everyone jumping out with the "I told ya so's!"
  14. He looks fine there. He made a nice play on a bouncer to his right that he had to turn and throw to the pitcher covering first.
  15. Yes, but I've seen the Packers win a couple Super Bowls already. I would gladly give up 9 Brewer losing seasons to see them do something I never thought was possible growing up. Then again, I've always enjoyed watching baseball and rooting for the Crew no matter how bad they were.
  16. You're really going to base his true value as a player off of 34 spring training at bats over the 900+ regular season at bats he's put up at the major league level in his career? If he goes 3-3 with a HR today, his spring stat line becomes .324/.359/.541/.900. 34 (meaningless) at bats are way too few to base anything off of.
  17. Sounds like you're talking about the Wednesday game against the White Sox. Haudricourt addressed this after the game:
  18. Is this the new BF.net record for oldest revived thread? lol
  19. Not sure where your stats were pulled from (as I'm sure that could be defined differently in different places), but on MLB.com they have the following for Braun's Late / Close OPS' the past 3 years: 2017: .778 2016: .910 2015: .890 Compared to the median OPS for teams league-wide the past few years: .717, .703, .679, still pretty good looking. That said, as you mentioned, those stats are pretty spotty because of sample sizes.
  20. Are people glossing over the fact that Santana was still only 24 last season? Meanwhile Aguilar is going into his age 28 season and has only managed to rack up a half season of at bats in his career. And the 279 ABs he had last year as a 27 year old that, I guess, people are using to compare him to Domingo weren't even as impressive as the younger Santana who did it over a full season of work. Just not sure how this is adding up to Aguilar is the better player... it's not even like he strikes out less or something, there's practically zero stats showing that he's a better hitter or to expect that he will be going forward.
  21. And Shaw follows it up with his own homer. 7-0 Crew. Not a great start by Carson Fulmer, lol
  22. Braun's off to a nice start today... GRAND SLAM in his second at bat to follow up his solo shot in the first.
  23. Yeah, that works for the top 4 hitters, you just end up with the back-to-back lefties once you get to Shaw - Thames
  24. RLRL works nicely against LHP where you don't want Thames in the lineup: Cain, Yelich, Braun, Shaw, Santana... but it gets a little iffier making that work against RHP when you have Thames in for Braun at first or Braun's in RF and Santana's out. But maybe you just put Thames in the lineup for whoever's out and not worry about the RLRL. Cain, Yelich, Thames, Shaw or Cain, Yelich, Braun, Shaw, Thames to start a game against a righty is pretty brutal, lol. And you can always pinch hit for Thames later in the game with Braun/Santana if they bring in a lefty.
  25. For me, I would at least ask that you include the actual tweet in your post and/or some sort of follow up opinions/reasons as to why you found it interesting or worth discussing. When the entire post is a single link, it infers it's something that requires no explanation or follow up and when that's in a forum about possibly signing the last remaining quality free agent I assume it's some sort of actual news. So when I have to click into it to see what it is and it ends up being a random twitter account making up fake news, it's kind of irking.
