  1. Let's assume CC just wants to give Aguilar a day off against a righty, as he likes to do with players from time to time to keep them fresh and to make sure 'bench' players get semi-regular playing time, is there anything else people are egregiously upset about with this lineup? Seems like a lot of complaining because one guy is getting a day off with 86 games to go in the season, lol.
  2. Extrapolating Suter's past two starts out, his full season projection is: 34 GS, 238.0 IP, 34 W, 0 L, 1.93 ERA, 0.74 WHIP You're right, he's not pitching like a TOR... he's pitching like a CY YOUNG WINNER!!! #optimismthread
  3. I think worrying about L-R-L-R matchups to start a game can be a little overblown. I'll take the sure matchups being in our favor to start the game. If they bring in a lefty to face Thames later, because we've stacked the lineup with lefties to start, that generally means we have at least two of Braun, Aguilar, and Santana available to pinch hit off the bench. The depth on this roster really nullifies that concern. The L-R-L-R comes more into play when you know your bench options aren't strong enough to warrant taking the starter out to create a better match up later in the game.
  4. Wow, we really are due against this guy: 5/6/18 - 7 IP, 0 ER (Pirates win 9-0) 7/17/17 - 5.2 IP, 2 ER (Pirates win 4-2) 6/20/17 - 5 IP, 2 ER (Pirates win 7-3) 5/5/17 - 3 IP, 0 ER (Pirates win 4-0) 8/25/16 - 6.1 IP, 2 ER (Pirates win 3-2) 9/21/16 - 6 IP, 1 ER (Pirates win 4-1) Let's drop a 3 spot on him in the first tonight!
  5. Sounded like Ray nearly caught it on a diving attempt
  6. Would you pull the trigger on losing Arcia, Hiura, Burnes, + at the deadline if it meant somehow getting both Realmuto and Machado back? Even knowing we'd lose Machado after the season, I might take a chance on our in-house pitchers the next couple years if we had this lineup for a pennant run: [pre]OPS vs. RHP '18 '16-18 OPS vs. LHP '18 '16-18 ---------------------------- ---------------------------- CF Cain .731 .742 CF Cain 1.200 .959 RF Yelich* .902 .876 RF Yelich* .704 .716 SS Machado .991 .844 SS Machado .871 .872 1B Thames* .972 .939 1B Aguilar .983 .911 3B Shaw* .958 .853 3B Shaw* .523 .665 LF Braun .730 .825 LF Braun .824 .927 C Realmuto .938 .809 C Realmuto .733 .738 2B Miller* .782 .760 2B Villar^ .945 .814[/pre] #pipedream
  7. Bring in Realmuto and Castro, call up Miller, maybe bring up Broxton or Phillips for Santana and we've got a heck of a lineup with a ton of flexibility shaping up: [pre]OPS vs. RHP '18 '16-18 OPS vs. LHP '18 '16-18 ---------------------------- ---------------------------- CF Cain .731 .742 CF Cain 1.200 .959 RF Yelich* .902 .876 RF Yelich* .704 .716 1B Thames* .972 .939 1B Aguilar .983 .911 3B Shaw* .958 .853 3B Shaw* .523 .665 LF Braun .730 .825 LF Braun .824 .927 C Realmuto .938 .809 C Realmuto .733 .738 2B Miller* .782 .760 2B Villar^ .945 .814 SS Castro .726 .747 SS Castro .721 .768 C Pina .606 .728 C Pina .620 .665 1B Aguilar .856 .815 1B Thames* .697 .668 2B Villar^ .683 .736 2B Miller* .639 .674 UT Perez .638 .679 UT Perez .586 .759 RF Santana .767 .815 RF Santana .352 .811 Out --- SS Arcia .566 .679 SS Arcia .275 .611 UT Sogard .394 .680 UT Sogard .384 .681 C Kratz 1.632 .479 C Kratz .500 .616[/pre]
  8. They said on the radio that the cubs have only been shut out in back to back games once in their history and the first time on back to back days. I think they got something wrong. They were shut out on back to back days last season against the Dodgers. May 26th+27th. That was specifically against the Brewers that they'd only been shut out in back to back games once and never on back to back days.
  9. While explaining how the values aren't much different arguably doesn't sound super unreasonable, the problem is that if the Astros made Keuchel available, other teams would blow that offer out of the water. There's zero chance Thames would get it done.
  10. [pre]OPS Team Rank vs. LHP (min. 10 PA) 1. Cain 1.178 2. Aguilar .958 3. Braun .865 4. Thames .775 5. Pina .704 6. Perez .600 7. Yelich .564 8. Villar .539 9. Bandy .539 10. Sogard .425 11. 11. If he's still injured, then yes I'm concerned, otherwise I'm siding with the "it's been 11 plate appearances" crowd. The previous three years he faced 261 left handed hitters and held them to a .189/.293/.276/.569 line, 12.5 K/9, and a 1.10 WHIP. I would like that weapon in the bullpen and am willing to give it a bit more time.
  12. Nice overview of potential trade candidates by Jon Heyman: https://frsbaseball.com/mlb/inside/inside-baseball-where-will-the-top-trade-candidates-end-up/ In addition to the the Brewers being the best bets for Archer and Lowrie, he has them as possibilities for Realmuto, Duffy, Lucroy, and Ramos.
  13. Looks like you're copying the giphy page instead of the actual image link (in giphy click "Copy link" and then copy the "GIF Link"). Here ya go!
  14. I went to the Orioles game yesterday and at one point in the game they had 7 of 9 hitters in the lineup with sub-.200 batting averages. Also, keep in mind none of those were pitchers and one of them was a .138 pinch hitter who came in for a .214 DH... Has there ever been a lineup like that later than like 3 games into the season before? Pretty mindboggling, lol. https://www.mlb.com/gameday/indians-vs-orioles/2018/04/22/529724#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=529724
  15. you DL him so we can get someone else on the roster who can actually play. Having him day to day at all times wastes a roster spot. If he's literally day-to-day with nagging injuries all year, then yes, you keep him on the DL and have an OF of Yelich-Cain-Santana with Thames at 1B and bring up Phillips or Broxton as the 4th OF. However, that said, despite some beliefs, he did actually go through prolonged periods last year where he didn't take many days off, so I don't think it's actually going to be that big of an issue where you're "always in the same day-to-day situation".
  16. Or keeping players active and not rotting on the bench for too long...
  17. But didnt they get less quality for the other two better outfielders? Yelich's contract is quite a bit more attractive, which makes him arguably more valuable than either.
  18. Well you're leaving it up to the discretion of the umpire at that point too, so probably not a great idea. I think it's good umpires can use common sense to bend a rule this way, but there should be some sort of punishment for the team delaying the game. Maybe a "delay of game" penalty, lol. First batter gets an automatic walk or something.
  19. Wouldn’t make too many assumptions yet. Yeah, not sure you can draw any conclusions yet. They sat Braun vs the first RHP, Santana vs the second RHP, and with four more RHPs coming up, I wouldn't be surprised to see Cain sit against one of them as well. We're getting into some iffy defense territory at that point with a Braun-Yelich-Santana outfield, but Cain does have the worst RHP splits of the three (.745 OPS in '16-17 vs. Braun's .843 and Santana's .826). It'll be interesting to see how many starts each guy gets during this 6-game stretch of righties.
  20. Maybe I missed the obvious answer here, but was there a reason they couldn't just keep the existing pitcher in the game for another batter while someone warmed up? ie. were they pinch hit for the previous half inning? Or was it just they already made the move so they couldn't take it back? Even then, as someone mentioned the Brewers did at some point, maybe the ump should have just suggested "you better use one of your position players who's already loose for a batter while you get someone warmed up properly."
  21. Defnitely showing nasty stuff and is throwing lots of strikes, he just needs to place his pitches better within the zone. On another note, Khris Davis is having a rough day in leftfield. He's had *two* flyballs bounce out of his glove that the official scorer has called doubles instead of errors...
  22. Who's going to trade for Cain at his current salary plus give up prospects when they didn't just outbid us a couple months ago (without having to give up additional prospects as well)? I think that's the biggest flaw in the hypothetical moreso than whether or not we should cut our losses if things aren't going well immediately. And if we're either having to eat salary or we're not getting much back in prospects (as his salary is probably still pretty much market value), what's the point? We might as well keep him and still have 4.5 years to fix up the rest of the team around him.
