    Opening Day! ⚾️ 🎉 What do we think about the big lineup decisions? Frelick or Yelich leading off? Which player doesn’t start amongst Turang, Ortiz, Monasterio?

    If we’re to believe the score preview, we’ve got 22-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez starting the opener against 26-year old RHP Matt Manning. Gotta figure we’ll see Quero at C, Black at 1B and an outfield of Roller, Wiemer and Hicklen. Main question for me is whether Yonny Hernandez or Vinny Capra starts at short.

    Good to see these MILB Spring Training games continuing. This is the third time we've seen Zavier Warren start in the outfield in the past few days (after 288 starts in the infield or catcher since 2021) and I believe it's the first time we've seen RHP Yorman Galindez listed this spring.

    We should probably be considering 25-year old RHP Blake Holub (acquired for Mark Canha) for our prospect lists. Drafted in 2021 and debuting in 2022, he’s moved very rapidly to AAA. Congrats as well to 26-year old RHP Harold Chirino, who’ll make his AAA debut in his 9th MILB season.

    After learning earlier of the plans to start 1B/C Wes Clarke and OF/INF Noah Campbell in AA ball, along injuries to LHP Robert Gasser and INF Christian Arroyo, I guess the main surprise for me is RHP James Meeker being absent. I'd thought that Meeker was a shoo-in and that RHP Justin Yeager might be the unfortunate odd man out. Instead, they're both out, presumably in order to give the team an extra lefty arm in the form of 26-year old LHP Nick Bennett (big congrats!). I'm guessing that LHP Darrell Thompson and RHP Chad Patrick are being placed on a reserve list or bumped to AA Biloxi.

    I think it's as simple as the coach wants a lefty bat (Dunn) to replace the lefty bat (Mitchell) which got injured. Neither Haase nor Dunn was going to make the team, but now Dunn squeezes in. I've literally been tweet searching 'catcher injured' for the past week and I think it now becomes even more relevant. If someone loses a catcher to a 60-day injury within the next one week, they'll likely become the best trade partner. Otherwise, we'll probably just take whatever mediocre offer comes across - e.g. from the Marlins, Athletics, etc. Coach Murphy suggested that Haase's contract is structured in a way that makes it likely that he can be retained, but I disagree. If he stunk in Spring Training (like Hiura last year), then Haase would be far more likely to clear waivers in my opinion.

    My friend, I struggled with this too at first, but there's a possibility that this decision was made jointly with the player, essentially following a "keep catching" path which has helped Cooper Hummel and David Fry make the big leagues. In Nashville, you have to figure that the catching starts will be 4 games Quero, 2 games Navarreto each week. Quero needs the experience and Navarreto needs to stay fresh. Then Coach Murphy or another senior coach mentioned that Black should play 4 days at first base and 2 days at third base. So Clarke would basically have been left with 1-2 first base starts and 2-3 DH starts per week. Wes Clarke has been listed as the starting catcher in 7 Minor League Spring Training games thus far (vs. Wood 5, Kahle 4, Norman 3, Diaz 3, Navarreto 2, Yerzy 2, D. Garcia 2, Quero 1, D. Miller 1, R. Rodriguez 1). As such, I'm guessing Wes will get at least 3 starts behind the plate in Biloxi per week, paired up with 2 players amongst Ramon Rodriguez, David Garcia, Andy Yerzy or Nick Kahle.

    OF Hedbert Perez placed on Low-A Carolina's 60-day injured list Perez started a Major League spring training game on March 9, being pinch run for after doubling and moving to third base on a ground ball in the 5th inning

    From here, I'm guessing that Wes Clarke, Brian Navarreto and Aaron Ashby will head straight to Toledo for Nashville's opening series. I hope that Justin Yeager accompanies them.

    Tough break, literally. Murphy’s obviously very high on Mitchell and was going to give him lots of playing time. Gotta figure Arnold will be tempted to claw back an arbitration year by optioning Mitchell to AAA after recovery. I believe he needs to be optioned for at least 56 days to achieve that.

    This feels like a case of More Questions than Answers. Have the AAA players (except Clarke, Meeker, Chirino) started packing up to head to Nashville (or even Toledo - opening game this Friday)? Is long-time SS (but now OF apparently) Eduardo Garcia seriously in contention for a spot in AA ball? Could INF Daniel Guilarte really be forced to repeat time at Low-A Carolina?

    If Bryan Hudson is in (congrats to him), it likely means that Bukauskas is out (to be optioned to AAA). It also likely kills any idea of starting the season with 14 position players and 12 pitchers (like when Ji-Man Choi made the OD roster in 2018), setting up a big Haase vs. Perkins (or maybe an Ortiz, Monasterio or Bauers surprise) decision.

    Gary Sanchez has caught 17 innings over the past 3 days. It seems reasonable to say he’s ready for Opening Day.

    Happy to see four more lineups today, including RHP Blake Whiting's first appearance since early September 2023 at Low-A Carolina. The 24-year old registered 13 Ks in 7.1 IP in the ACL and Low-A last year, including 4 Ks and 2 saves in the ACL playoffs which don't show up in his official stats.

    Yeah. I’m assuming we won’t be willing to DFA Vieira (or Bauers). Of course, there’s also the possibility of putting Sanchez (or some more surprising player) on the injured list. And we could sign Clevinger!

    So the Brewers really only have two Opening Day decisions left, I think: - keep two (max 1 pitcher) of Haase, Perkins, Hudson, Bukauskas

    I guess they heard you, as today’s lineup cards include Ibarguen, Di Turi and Nadal, each of whom has not yet played above DSL ball. We also have our first Brian Navarreto sighting of the spring. Nature and athletes are healing.
