New Rattlers Pitching Coach Josh Spence (formerly Biloxi’s Bullpen Coach) will be considered a magician if he’s able to quickly straighten out Cruz (7.24 ERA), Cameron Wagoner (7.32 ERA), Michele Vassalotti (6.00 ERA) and newcomer Sam Gardner (7.71 ERA). With 1B Ernesto Martinez (2-for-4, double, RBI) now hitting a bit better, it may be time to get the seventh-year minor leaguer up to Biloxi for his first taste of AA ball. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old RHP Tyler Woessner (2.52 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 in 60 2/3 IP) is another Rattler who may get a shot in AA ball at some point in the second half of the season, after the Southern League stops using those extra tacky baseballs of course. For now, he’ll try to even the series 2-2 on Friday evening. Friday’s outlook: Don’t be surprised if RHPs Alexander Vallecillo and Will Rudy tag-team Friday’s game, looking to cover the entire nine innings, as the Mudcats need a victory to avoid a 3-0 series deficit. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Athletics 2, ACL Brewers 0 Box Score / Game Log Pitching dominated this game, with the teams combining to strike out 25 hitters while only conceding two doubles, five singles and three walks. Unfortunately for the Brewers, four Athletics reached in the top of the 1st inning off of starting RHP Daniel Corniel (4 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks), as they grabbed the 2-0 lead which held up over the remainder of the game, dropping the ACL Brewers record to 8-4. ACL Brewers’ Extras: RHP Jesus Rivero (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) and LHP Anfernny Reyes (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) were both superb. Coincidentally, they both hit the same batter, which I think the numbers clearly suggest was the fault of the opposing player. And numbers don’t lie. :) Rivero has now K’d 19 in just 11 1/3 IP and lowered his season WHIP to 0.97, while Reyes has K’d 10 in 7 2/3 IP, has yet to allow an earned run and dropped his own season WHIP to 0.52. 17-year old SS Juan Baez (3-for-4, double) collected all three hits which the Brewers registered, with his teammates going a combined 0-for-26 with one walk. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 14, DSL Guardians Blue 2 Box Score / Game Log Our DSL Dos squad led 3-1 after two innings, 6-1 by the 5th inning and then poured in another eight runs thereafter to improve their record to 7-6. They outhit the Guardians Blue team 14-to-5 and stole five bases while conceding none. We’ll have to start asking why the organization has been largely hiding 17-year old, 6’4” right fielder Christopher Vasquez (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 3 RBIs), who now has 2 HRs, 3 doubles and 5 RBIs in just 12 career at-bats. Still looking at the offense, each of left fielder Demetrio Nadal (3-for-4, triple, two doubles, walk, 4 RBIs) and SS Filippo Di Turi (3-for-5, double, walk, 3 RBIs) collected three hits, while combining to knock in seven runs. This was Nadal’s first career game in the outfield after 47 starts at shortstop, third base or second base. On the mound, starting RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and 18-year old Carlos Maurera (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) were both impressive in reducing their season ERAs to 1.80 and 1.42, respectively. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 7, DSL Guardians Red 4 Box Score / Game Log The DSL Uno game started as a pitching duel, 17-year old fireballer RHP Eric Prado (5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks matched the opposition through five scoreless innings. The Brewers’ bats didn’t spur into action until they trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning, with 1B/C Brayan Oropeza getting them started with a single, before big-time two-out singles from C Yannic Walther (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), OF/1B Argenis Aparicio and DH/OF Brian Sanchez (2-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) put them ahead 5-1. RHP Justin Jarvis (3.32 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 10.2 K/9 in 65 IP) targets a bounce-back performance after a rough last outing, as AA Biloxi seeks a 3-0 series lead at home over Chattanooga. At .292, RF Carlos D. Rodriguez has one of the Brewers’ top batting averages in the minors (T-6th).

2022 first round pick SS Eric Brown Jr. (.711 OPS in 180 PAs) is indeed back in High-A Wisconsin’s lineup, with struggling RHP Stiven Cruz (7.43 ERA in 46 IP) also getting the start tonight, as the club aims to grab a 2-1 series lead at home against Lansing.

AAA Nashville plays a home doubleheader against Norfolk today, with LHP Thomas Pannone (2.89 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 7.7 K/9 in 46.2 IP) starting the opening game. 2B Cam Devanney has a .956 OPS in 59 June PAs.

The Low-A Mudcats need a win against Lynchburg at home tonight to forge a 1-1 series tie. 20-year old RHP Patricio Aquino (1.82 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 9.6 K/9 in 34.2 IP) aims for another solid start. SS Gregory Barrios has found his groove with a .853 OPS thus far in 72 June PAs.

After yesterday’s rainout, AAA Nashville and Norfolk try again to get their series started, with the Sounds welcoming back DH Keston Hiura and 2B Josh VanMeter from injuries. RHP Caleb Boushley (4.57 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 in 61 IP) now gets to start on normal rest.

Paul Moeller moves up to AA Bullpen Coach, though I’m not sure what this means for existing AA Bullpen Coach Josh Spence.

Doesn’t he have the arm for right field? (long-term; I don’t actually mean this year for MLB). If the Twins could try Sano out there (what in God’s name were they thinking?), it might be worth a try for Black, if the 3B experiment is ultimately abandoned.

The High-A Timber Rattlers also have an early game today and seek a 2-0 series lead at home against Lansing. Today's starter is Birthday Boy (he's 22 now) RHP Cameron Wagoner (7.66 ERA in 47 IP). LF Terence Doston is on a decent run (12-of-last-33 though all singles; with only 4 Ks).

The AA Shuckers are trying to ride yesterday's momentum to win a second game at home against Chattanooga today. 21-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (3.34 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 12.4 K/9 in 56.2 IP) is today's starting pitcher and yesterday's walk-off hero LF Tristen Lutz is back in the lineup to continue his solid month (.938 OPS in 54 June PAs).

The ACL starts are interesting. We’ve basically got: 1) High-fliers with OPS over 1.000: Satchell Norman, Jhonny Severino, Reidy Mercado, Duncan Garcia, Edgardo Ordonez, Juan Baez 2) Steady performers (.600 - .850 OPS range): Yeison Perez, Johan Barrios, Dylan O’Rae, Ney Serrano 3) Struggling (sub-.500 OPS): Angel Pereira, Luis Medina, Reece Walling, Jose Caballero Others haven’t played much (Felipe Valderrama, Beyker Pastran, Jason Ollarve, Jesus Garcia) or haven’t played in the past 3 games (Jonatan Guzman, Miguel Briceno).

That late comeback by Biloxi means that our full season affiliates have climbed back to an aggregate season record of 128-128, with 9 games remaining in the first half (4 Wednesday, 5 Thursday).

Rounding out the full season affiliates, AAA Nashville hosts Orioles’ affiliate Norfolk this week. RHP Caleb Boushley (4.57 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 in 61 IP) is something of a surprise starter (where’s Pannone?). Sunday’s walk-off hero LF Eddy Alvarez is sporting an 1.148 OPS in 54 PAs this month.

AA Biloxi is also home this week, hosting Reds’ affiliate Chattanooga. The team’s mystery starter has now been revealed as rehabbing RHP Jason Alexander. DH/C Wes Clarke has posted an impressive .939 OPS through 55 PAs thus far in June.

The Low-A Mudcats host Guardians’ affiliate Lynchburg this week and it is indeed RHP Logan Henderson (4.12 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 19.2 IP) who starts the series opener. 18-year old CF Luis Lara has an extraordinary 1.127 OPS in 43 PAs thus far in June.

Wisconsin hosts Athletics’ affiliate Lansing this week, with top pitching prospect RHP Jacob Misiorowski (2.31 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 14.4 K/9 in 35 IP) making his home debut in High-A ball. 2B Robert Moore (.796 OPS in 69 PAs) is having his best month of 2023 thus far.
