Adames to Dodgers? Dodgers Could Be Looking To Upgrade At Shortstop ”Ardaya mentions Brewers shortstop Willy Adames, who the Dodgers were interested in last offseason, as a potential trade candidate. Indeed, the 28-year-old would certainly be an upgrade…However, after Adames, it’s hard to identify other shortstops who would count as an upgrade.” I hate to admit it, but an Adames trade now is probably safer than hoping he does enough from April-July 2024 to retain solid value before the trade deadline. Turang would presumably shift to SS and we’d need to add 2 major infield bats.

I have to give Arnold the benefit of the doubt this time around, after wondering how we’d make it all fit together last year (Guerra, Varland, Payamps and Wilson all could not be optioned).

LVBP.com has an article absolutely lauding CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - first rookie to collect 50 hits since Luis Arraez, was on pace to break the league’s hits record, top leadoff hitter this year by all metrics, exciting on the bases, low strikeout rate, hitting balls the opposite way, etc. Here’s a link to an English version using Google translate. Interesting quote: “We play for all 30 organizations. Anyone can ask for a trade, or take me in the Rule 5 Draft,” Rodríguez said. “We are focused to see what happens next year.”

Not many games were played on Sunday and the Puerto Rico box scores are difficult to find, but Baseball Reference loaded some winter league season data, so I know Brian Navarreto had an 0-for-4 game for Carolina at some point over the past few days. That’s notable since it means he’s healthy.

    Carlos D. Rodriguez ends his Winter League campaign with another 3-hit game: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 3-for-6, double, run (.354 AVG) - in Magallanes’ 6-5 defeat to Margarita - RHP Christian Mejias - 0.2 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua’s 15-1 loss to La Guaira - PH/2B - Yonny Hernandez - 0-for-1 for Aragua

I suggest we avoid the over-tinkering which I think doomed the Twins in 2016: - thrusting Buxton/Chourio into leadoff spot too soon - shifting Sano/Yelich to a new position - trading Hicks for a backup catcher…well, that was uniquely a Twins’ fiasco. I suggest we keep Yelich at LF/DH, get a top-10 first baseman, trade/option surplus outfielders (but not for a backup catcher), and bat Chourio 8th or 9th.

CDR with 3 more hits, Edwin Jimenez keeps trending well and Yonny Hernandez is now 2-for-48 (oh my). Friday action: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 3-for-5, run (.348 AVG); also had his first error - in Magallanes’ 8-4 loss to Caracas - RHP Edwin Jimenez - 4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K - in Zulia’s 4-1 victory over Caribes - 3B Yonny Hernandez - 0-for-3, walk - in Aragua’s 9-4 win over La Guaira

Bulletin board material for Logan Henderson 😁

I actually think we hit the service time manipulation sweet spot with Wiemer in 2023: MLB time: April 1 - September 17 = 169 or 170 days (i.e. not a full MLB year) Option time: less than 20 days (i.e. no minor league options spent)

On-base machine Carlos D. Rodriguez on Thursday: 4-for-5, 2 RBIs, SB - in Magallanes' 10-7 victory over Aragua And I think this interview means he's being called back state-side this weekend, after which we'd have almost nobody playing in the main winter leagues (I suspect Brian Navarreto is nursing a minor injury and Edwin Jimenez has been shut down for the winter, but I'm just guessing)

Frelick would probably return the best haul, no?

Carlos D. Rodriguez continues to produce in Venezuela. Is he following in the footsteps laid by Andruw Monasterio last offseason? Wednesday performances: CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 2-for-4, walk, RBI, SB, run - in Magallanes' 4-3 loss to Caracas 3B Yonny Hernandez - 0-for-3 - in Aragua's 5-4 loss to Margarita

23-year old undrafted C Alejandro Rodriguez saw his first Winter League game action on Tuesday: CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 1-for-4, walk, SB, run - in Magallanes' 5-2 victory over Aragua RHP Christian Mejias - 1.1 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua's defeat C Brian Navaretto - 1-for-4; threw out 1 of 2 basestealers - in Carolina's 5-4 extra inning win over Ponce. He exited the game after a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 10th inning PH/C Alejandro Rodriguez - 0-0, walk, run - in Caguas' 14-3 win over RA12 - played one inning behind the plate

Decent Sunday production: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 3-for-8, HR, double, RBI, SB - but Magallanes was swept by Anzoategui in a doubleheader - DH Brian Navarreto - 1-for-2, 2 walks, 2 RBIs - in Carolina’s 11-0 victory over Ponce

Just one Brewer played on Saturday: - C Brian Navarreto - 1-for-4, double, 2 RBIs; also threw out 1 of 2 basestealers - in Carolina’s 3-1 win over Mayaguez

Thanks, but I'm not convinced he's burned an option yet. MLB website says, "Once an optioned player has spent at least 20 days in the Minors in a given season, he loses one of his options."

Jimenez is rounding back into form. Friday performances: - RHP Edwin Jimenez - 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K - but Zulia lost 4-2 to Margarita - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 2-for-5, walk, 2 runs - in Magallanes’ 12-7 win over La Guaira - C Brian Navarreto - 0-for-5; allowed one stolen base - yet Carolina won 6-3 over RA12

Unfortunately, it probably is time to trade Burnes. Logic-1: If you have great defense, do you really need to invest in great pitching? Logic-2: Teams are over-paying for starting pitching, so take advantage. Logic-3: Heaven-forbid he follows Woodruff into serious injury territory. Time to reluctantly cash in for 2 MLB players and 2 decent prospects, then watch Burnes win his second Cy Young Award elsewhere.

Close games for Brisbane Thursday (5-4 walk-off win) and Friday (1-0 defeat): 1B Tayden Hall - 2-for-7, double, walk RHP Sam Gardner - 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks Gardner now has an other-worldly 12 Ks in 4 innings pitched
  20. Ro Mueller
Thanksgiving Day Action: RHP Christian Mejias - 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks - earned the Win in Aragua's 8-1 victory over Magallanes CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 0-for-4 for Magallanes
  21. Ro Mueller
CDR came through again on Wednesday: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez- 2-for-4, walk, sac fly, 3 RBIs, 1 run - in Magallanes’ 11-6 victory over Zulia - C Brian Navarreto - 0-for-5; also gave him up 2 SBs - in Carolina’s 5-2 loss to Mayaguez - PH/2B Yonny Hernandez - hit-by-pitch in one plate appearance in Aragua's 13-3 win over Caracas

They also have James Meeker as a LHP. 😁 Wiemer appears to have been optioned for only 15 days (Sep 17 - Oct 2), so I also believe he has 3 options left, unless there’s more to the rule.
  23. Ro Mueller
To me, Wiemer’s a potential 30HR / 30SB / 170K guy with a terrific arm for right field. The challenge is that it may take him 2-3 years for his bat to come around at the MLB level. I’d earlier estimated that we’ll option him to AAA for about 74 days in 2024 for service time manipulation…er…to let him work on improving his overall hitting. But if we can get another insane Ruiz-for-Contreras type deal, we’ll have to take it.

CDR kept rolling on Tuesday: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 2-for-4, double, 2 walks, 3 runs - in Magallanes’ back-and-forth 12-11 loss to Aragua - INF Yonny Hernandez - pinch ran, stole a base for Aragua - C Brian Navarreto - 0-for-3, walk; also threw out 2 runners - in Carolina’s 2-1 loss to Caguas

I feel like the only person who believes a Donaldson reunion may happen. Cheap flier looking for homers without wrecking defense. Might depend on whether Murphy believes in his ability to contribute and not screw up clubhouse chemistry. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/11/josh-donaldson-open-to-playing-another-season.html
