  1. "Mighty inconvenient?" It's about an hour drive from Ed Smith in Sarasota to Al Lang Field (or whatever they're calling it now) in St. Pete. 1 1/2 hours to Tampa or Clearwater/Dunedin. 25 minutes to the Pirates' park in Bradenton. We're hardly talking the Pony Express over the Rockies here. And here's the Reds' ST schedule for this year. Heavy on blocks of home games, and most of the "roadtrips" are well within half-day trips.
  2. Well, I on the other hand would start going more often. So there.
  3. More history, more to do in the state, closer to Wisconsin, as easy to get to multiple parks despite just a bit further apart: provided the facilities are as nice, I'm definitely pro-Florida.
  4. There are so many teams so close to Maryvale it was fun to check out 4 games in 3 days at 3 different parks. From Sarasota you can easily check out games in Bradenton, St. Pete, Clearwater and Tampa. Dundein and Lakeland are just slightly further afield. And you can take an afternoon and head down to Ft. Meyers or the Orlando area...the Atlantic coast isn't all that far, either. I don't believe the teams are as compactly close as they are in Arizona, but the idea that they're too spread out is a myth. Anyay, I grew up a Brewers fan in Sarasota and I still have a lot of family there. Needless to say I'm excited by the concept of them heading there.
  5. I thought this was a pretty funny/sickening post-script. Apparently Hank Steinbrenner thinks that when a Yankeees or Red Sox catcher blocks the plate, small-market baserunners should defer to their Eastern Seaboard Overlords, put the brakes on, and get tagged out.
  6. I'll take a Schlitz over anything in that tourney. Crazy talk! What a weird poll, though...no rhyme or reason. Most of those beers aren't even in the same universe. And their choices...if they wanted to rep Wisconsin, heck, if they wanted to rep Leinenkugel's/Miller products, they could've done a lot better than those two. It's even factually incorrect: the beer competing from Anchor was their Liberty Ale but they show a bottle of Anchor Steam.
  7. I wouldn't be happy he's out but they're not playing with yellow jerseys on out there, either. I can also say I;d be deeply disappointed if they retaliated in that fashion. The slide was rough play, maybe indeed slightly too much so for ST...however, the cleats to the knees were nothing but intentional and way over-the-line, especially since they'd already brushed Crawford back in the 1st and had been warned.
  8. Actually, it wasn't "fairly obvious" at all...most of the other comments were clearly jokes, this didn't sell at all. Either the commenter is an idiot or an awful amateur comedian (although I'd venture to guess he's likely both)> And I'll agree that quality is objective but if this is the level of his insight and writing skill, regardless of how much he makes and what blogs he contributes to I've gotta say I'm not too impressed.
  9. People lower their shoulder in an attempt to knock the catcher off-kilter and score all the time. Spikes into the second baseman's knee does not equate.
  10. You can tell how quality that blog is by the caliber of their commenters: "This doesn't include what he's still getting from his under the table share with the Brewers." Uh... As for the guy's argument about Selig, he didn't touch on the many reasons why Selig is so highly paid and did an awful job going into legitimate beefs about him. Blech.
  11. I'm surprised this was never discussed. I wasn't impressed by the way he ran and left the team (although the whole organization was pretty dire at the time) but I'm glad to hear he's expected to recover.
  12. Well, as far as first AP quotes go, mine ("Maybe now they'll finally get veggie brats in more places in MP") could be worse. It could also be better.
  13. "remember, WI folks retire generally to AZ, not FLA. " Is there proof of this somewhere? There are a lot of Packer fans everywhere (Remember "Lambeau South"?)
  14. I agree with Bo Ryan as most likely For it to be any of the Brewers or Packers, I think they'd need to be lifers, and I just don't see it. Maybe if Hawk somehow develops into a Reggie White-type and sticks around it's possible (I even question putting White and Molly up there with Yount and Favre in the first place)
  15. Yeah, I grew up in Florida and I always associate rain there with violent half-hour spells which clear up right afterwards. I think Florida is a more attractive option in a lot of ways, but for now, if the team is happy in Maryvale (and I've yet to hear otherwise), I think they should stay put.
  16. He probably picked up the habit sitting on the end of the bench for huge stretches of time during his playing days...I'm only half-joking.
  17. Ten cups a day is still Henry Rollins' territory...that guy used to drink it by the pot back in his Black Flag days You'd think a guy that dosed up on the bean would be more apt to take out pitchers right away, but caffeinated jumpiness maybe explains his eagerness to have McClung take a shot at Pujols in a crucial game
  18. Having been a proud cheesehead living in Chicago for several years, I was always a little sensitive to Wisconsin-bashing there (although in reality there was very little of it and when I heard it, it mostly came from overweight guys with bad goatees who lived out in some crummy suburb)...but this guy was just not good at it. I didn't wince once. And as far as his actual analysis of the team goes? Forget about it. (I did like the Fielder line, too, though)
  19. Strangely, none of the obits seem to mention his late-life accomplishmnent of Google Won't Save You #62
  20. I know this is shallow, but I can't take that guy seriously after seeing his face.
  21. One of my favorite things to say to younger cub fans at Miller Park is that "someday your dad will love you enough to buy tickets to your home field". I really hope you don't do this. If Brewers' fans are reduced to making cracks to kids, I really hope this rivalry doesn't develop any further.
  22. Yeah, I was about to say, last time I heard this was about five months ago and while it was pretty well-done (and picked up steam as it went along), I can wait another five months to hear it again.
  23. Hey Moe! Hey Moe! For a while there I thought, "Jeez, maybe this is harder than I thought"
  24. Jan Hammer? Heaven 17? This person's band did not prominently feature keyboards (that I'm aware of). But he was the frontman of the band that had the Top 20 hit. And no, he was not Paul Robseon, although I like the idea.
  25. No, but it was the same era
