  1. Magic Numbers: CHI & PHI 17, LAD 15, SD 13 (tiebreaker not settled, Brewers are 1-2 against them with 3 yet to play), NYM 11, SF 8, AZ, CIN, & STL 6 (tiebreaker with STL not settled, 6 more games), & MIA 1. In my way of thinking, the magic number for: the division is 17 against the Cubs. Need this first the 1-seed is also 17 against both the Phillies and Cubs - again, have to have the division first clinching the postseason is 8, currently against the Giants
  2. Braves have been eliminated. Marlins are next, but not sure if the number is 3 or 2 (it’s likely 2, but head to head was even at 3-3 - doesn’t matter much).
  3. 20 is the magic number for the Phillies at the moment and they are the closest pursuer. Any combo of wins by the Brewers and losses by each individual contender that equals at least 20 for each team means the Brewers get the 1-seed. I get what you are saying, though, because of the jockeying amongst the contenders, If a team overtakes the Phillies as the closest competitor, I would use the magic number for that team. Would it be better to do a "race for the 1-seed" and list the magic number for each challenger? It's 19 for the Cubs and 18 for the Dodgers (and you could throw in 16 for the Padres, given they have a reasonable shot at the division).
  4. Just to catch up a little bit, the magic number to clinch a postseason spot is, I believe, 9, For the 1-seed, it’s 20, and that’s the Phillies. Any MKE win in this series would knock an extra magic number off due to tiebreakers. You’re all up to speed with the division at 19. We’re (likely) going to start eliminating several teams over the next week. ATL is next at 2.
  5. Pirates eliminated
  6. Ok, Toby Flenderson. I kid. Am I correct that you were born after the ‘80s? Not casting aspersions towards younger generations - I am sure I undervalued players before my time, and am possibly overvaluing players of my early fandom.
  7. If it were up to me - and I doubt I’m alone in this - #20 would be retired. Gorman Thomas might not actually be worthy by the numbers, but he was as beloved as any Brewer ever. Well, by me anyway. To this day, if anyone asks who my favorite player is, that’s my answer.
  8. All those '82 guys are etched into the hearts of those of us who were around back then. Charlie Moore was one of the lesser-sung of our heroes, but he was definitely one of the longtime Brewer stalwarts of the early years. I remember him being mostly a catcher, but they probably moved him out to the OF later in his career.
  9. Honestly, it's mostly joy already, but the specter of entering the playoffs yet again without key pieces and then going out immediately would really send me into a tizzy. If they're relatively healthy and lose, it won't be as bad on my psyche. I have always been of the belief that playoffs in every sport are much more a crapshoot than the regular season, so regular season accomplishments mean more to me than the average fan (I suspect) because of the long-term excellence it requires. But, the unluckiness of this franchise with playoff health annoys the heck out of me - maybe nobody comes into October 100%, but it sure seems like we've gotten the shorter end of that stick.
  10. Thanks - this is also why Wash went from 3 yesterday to 0 today. I'll try to be more careful. When we get to the Phillies series next week, it'd be good to take at least one of those games to earn the tiebreaker on them - I think even if they sweep us to go 3-3 on the season. we are ahead of them on the next tiebreaker criteria. They're currently the top rival for the #1 seed (tied with Cubs' magic #). Gotta watch out for SD, too, since we do have another series with them and we're currently 1-2 against them.
  11. Not gonna lie - seeing the storminess of the Cards' Contreras puts the idea in my head that our Contreras has that in him, too. I'm all in favor of players showing passion - they're human. When it goes too negative too often, though, it can go south reputation-wise (see Pham, Tommy).
  12. Division and #1 seed: 24 Clinch the postseason: 15 We have a new "next team to be eliminated" - Pittsburgh: 5 Washington joins Colorado in no longer being able to catch the Brewers - they're too "Light" in the win column:
  13. Division and #1 seed: 26 Making playoffs: 17 Next team to be eliminated ((Washington): 3
  14. Regarding Woodruff, there’s a devil on one shoulder telling me to overuse him as much as possible right now (knowing his Brewer career almost certainly ends when the season does). But the angel on the other shoulder kinda knows that’s a bad idea.
  15. You’ve got the right formula, but we’re actually at 27 on the Cubs right now, 28 on the Phillies for #1 seed and 20 on the Reds to clinch any playoff spot.
  16. Myers was sent down for Rodriguez a couple of days ago, Not sure what the shuttling rules are, but I'd be surprised if Myers is brought back up to start on Sunday. Is Rodriguez a possibility?
  17. We also have the Phillies and Padres in Sept, - rivals for the #1 and #2 seed. That ought to keep us sharp, too.
  18. The Giants are a respectable 10th in runs allowed, but 25th in runs scored. They have lost their last 3 and 10 of their last 12. They would have been in the thick of the WC race if they could have done anything in this stretch - as it is, they're 6.5 games back, and you have to think that all hope has been dashed. Got to kick'em while they're down. The game tonight is sneaky important to the series because they have their #1 and #2 SPs going the next two days (and we might have a spot starter on Sunday).
  19. No Yelich? 26 HRs and 87 RBIs leads the team by 9 and 20, respectively.. Lots of people on this board have observed that when he's hitting, MKE wins. He's also a leader in the dugout. Ok, so he doesn't play defense much, and he does go into funks where he Ks a lot. Others have weaknesses too. Contreras may be the most irreplaceable player with only stopgap-type players behind him, but he went for a long chunk of this season where people wanted him to go on the IL due to his lack of production. The Brewers have actually thrived without Chourio, so, while valuable, not most valuable Turang, Frelick, and Collins are all really similar to me - scrappy do-everythings, but more like important cogs in the machine rather than the guy at the top of the opponent's scouting report. Peralta is great, but often inefficient, putting a strain on the bullpen with his short, but effective outings. It's Yelich for me.
  20. Division - 28 #1 seed - 30 any playoff spot - 22 Next team to be eliminated (Washington) - 8 (followed closely by PIT at 9)
  21. We blow hard past Brouhard (29) and find ourselves on (Andrew) Vaughn (28),
  22. The Brewers site is showing Whisenhunt tomorrow and Webb on Saturday, They have Verlander going today, so at least we'll avoid him (not even sure he's good anymore, tbh, but I've heard of him...)
  23. I have to believe Megill is coming in no matter what in the 9th. He's the only rested arm we have.
