  1. Felix Valerio snags an absolute rope up the middle right of the infield and saves 2 runs. On to the top of the fifth and it's still 2-1 Birmingham.
  2. And now, Carlos has walked a batter and the bases are loaded. A call to the bullpen has been sent forth. Man, I feel for the young man. He didn't deserve this fate. He was cruising and, well, it just fell apart all over the diamond. Let's hope they can limit this damage with the bullpen. Robbie Hitt on the mound for his practice pitches.
  3. Opportunistic scoring and pitching. They've had guys hot and they've had key hits. Tonight's run will be scored an rbi double. It was lost in the lights and blooped 8' beyond the LF'er. LOL. It is not going their way in the bottom of the fourth, however. Luna has given up 2 - BUT on a dropped foul tip followed by an opposite field dinger and then a botched double play ball leads to a grounder up the middle ran out and the runner from third scored. Luna doesn't deserve this score. 2-1 at present Birmingham.
  4. On to the bottom of the fourth inning where the Shuckers lead 1-0 on a gift-wrapped double to Garrett Mitchell scoring Freddy Zamora. Carlos Luna is absolutely pounding the zone and pitching efficiently through 3. Let's hope that continues for the 25 yo Panama native. As the game has progressed he has really mixed in his sinking changeup very very nicely. Lots to like in the young season for Carlos. He looks so poised and in control of his stuff on the mound.
  5. Figueroa's issues are command. He has a nice mix of pitches. Nice frame. Decent velocity but he's struggled with his location. On the flip side of this, with similar stuff but a taller stature and higher delivery, Segura was in the zone with more regularity. Segura has a little more of a splitter or two-seamer in his fastball arsenal. Both interesting young pitchers, however, and it will be interesting to see how they develop.
  6. This will be mentioned in my Minor League report, but it is worth mentioning here in case you don't read my notes: The Mudcats have scored first in 8 straight games. In total, through tonight they've scored 14 first inning runs scored on the year. Get to their action early if you are looking to get a sneak peak at that young young ballclub.
  7. A nice 5-spot by the Mudcats in the bottom of the 7th inning tacked on those insurance runs they needed. 8-0 headed to the 8th.
  8. That's a fun one. I think, if that was offered, I'd think about it if either or both of the Georgia DL were there. That feels like a lot of Capital to give up, tho, in a draft that is seen as deeper than it is top heavy.
  9. I am going to go the other way on this: I don't believe the Packers select a WR in Rd 1. What I do 'believe' (quotes intentional as I realize I don't know a darn thing) is they will: go defense with both, maybe O-Line, maybe trade up (targeting Karlaftis), maybe use 1 of their 1st round picks while trading back with the other. I am of the opinion they will wait on WR's until their Day 2 picks and later - assuming they grab more than one to throw into the Mix.
  10. Thanks for that heads up. Thinking back, I had moved to SW Wisconsin in 2008 and then Southern Tennessee most of 2009 before heading to New Mexico in the great Southwest. I've literally farmed alllllll over. I was a wee out of touch then and, well, it seems like I certainly missed his best baseball season! Those Twins teams with Morneau, Mauer, Hunter, Cuddyer et al. Man, those were fun teams.
  11. Wow. What a sneak peak there from Hayden - an easy young man to root for. It's really important to see what these young men do and experience to live their dreams and it is really nice to see that positive outlook and perseverance from both Korry (albeit, in limited camera time) and Hayden. I wish them all the best in their new situations.
  12. I lived in Minneapolis/St. Paul during Mauer's prime. I agree with this sentiment 100% tho, if I recall correctly, Mauer never had an offensive season the caliber of Yelich's MVP season(s)? I could be wrong here...But, Mauer certainly was oft-injured if memory serves.
  13. I know Ureña, imho unfairly, got some pretty negative remarks in his opening day struggles at Wrigley. But, I think it is pretty easy to see why the Brewers like him out of the Pen. He has stuff. He is throwing harder than he has in recent memory. He can be a meaningful piece in the Pen. Which brings me to: Organizationally, at present, we have an absurd abundance of riches in the Bullpen Department.
  14. A couple really nice pitch frames by Narvaez there to get key strike calls too on those borderline inside in-swinging 'fastballs'.
  15. Well done Gustave! Captain Obvious would like to say: Life is so much easier when our inning eater bullpen guys are getting out of innings unscathed. Follows up with: "It's easier to win baseball games when you score more runs."
  16. Goodness does Renfroe have an arm, eh? Almost picked that guy off 2nd when he was a mere 5-6' off the bag and Renfroe was in deep right field.
  17. I am 100% with you @RoCoBrewfan. Things are much easier and breezier in my baseball world as a result...and, I still enjoy my Brewers games. Even when they aren't hitting the way we'd like, I know they can get hot when we least expect it.
  18. This Pirates defense will play for 9 innings. Not and easy fly out but a catchable ball.
  19. That may be the most awkward I've ever seen Reynolds on a catchable fly ball.
  20. Of note in the Rick Sweet interview re: Ethan Small: He's starting to really work in his slider to fine-tune a crucial 3rd pitch. He's getting comfortable with it and he'll need that comfort to have any success at the major league level. He's shaping it and getting the speed he wants with it. The Sounds are 14 of 14 in stolen bases so far on the young season. He mentions they've never had a First Base coach and now Yost can relay to David at First base - it's crucial to have a coach there. Also of note: He still hates the Pitch clock. It's impacting hitters the most. And, he clearly does not think it will play at the Major League level.
  21. It's hard to tell, really, as it's early. They are currently decent, for their League, in getting on base and hitting HR's (3rd in each category of 8 teams). But, their overall BA is 6th of 8 teams. What they have experienced is extremely timely hot streaks and big nights from different players - Joey Wiemer, Tristen Lutz, Felix Valerio, Jakson Reetz, and Brent Diaz have all had shining moments. That will play. We'll see how it all shakes out.
  22. This is extremely exciting. I have seen enough of borderline give and takes. One inning a pitch 6" off the zone is a strike...the next, it's a ball on a crucial 3-2 pitch.
  23. Also of note, and prompted in the comments, is Alex Wright (UAB) also with a 25% win rate.
