    Okay, so this is an interesting point. He has struck out 10 times in 36 PAs. That's not great but it's damned good by Keston Hiura standards.     This division is pretty clearly the second-worst division in baseball (nothing can compete with the AL Central). While the Cards have an outside shot at the division, I think this will boil down to the Cubs and Brewers come September. May the least-bad team win.

    The problem is that Hiura is not on the 40-man and once he's there, you're stuck with him and it's unlikely he clears waivers again. I'd much rather see Arnold aggressively pursue a longer-term option against LHP than call up Hiura. It doesn't even need to be a great option, just a guy who can post an .800 OPS against LHP and be flat-out terrible against RHP.

    I find it incredibly difficult to cheer for the Cardinals under any circumstances. They're my NL White Sox.

    Hiura is probably better than Voit but only in a role the Brewers do not need filled on the 26-man roster. Which is the problem with the overall roster construction right now. The Brewers need someone to step into a corner role and mash lefties. They simply don't have that player.

    Yeah, he has medium-sized reverse splits. I wasn't a big fan of the Voit signing in the first place so I can't say I'm surprised by the failure here. The Brewers needed a lefty masher. Voit isn't that. He's fine against lefties, nothing more. The Brewers already had a bunch of guys who can hit righties. Which is why I advocated for picking up Kyle Garlick on waivers when the Twins released him but that's water under the bridge. He fills the lefty-mashing role for the league minimum.

    The Cardinals are almost surely better than their record - and their pythag indicates that is the case - but in my opinion, they're probably not good enough to dig out of this hole, either. The team is old, their pitching is suspect, and they've put themselves at a huge disadvantage. To just scrape into the playoffs, they likely need to be ~18 games over .500 from today through the end of the season. It's unlikely a team projected to be an 85 win team going into the season, a team that vastly underperformed for six weeks, is going to be able to pull that off. Especially given how dysfunctional the clubhouse seems to be right now.

    It's time to update prospect rankings! Surprisingly, no one is dropping off the eligibility list yet. Garrett Mitchell is the closest but due to the injury, he's just under 130 at-bats.     I think the Cubs are far more dangerous than the Cardinals. The Cubs' BaseRuns record is 23-11. Their pythag is 22-12. They're playing really good baseball and if that holds, their record will begin to reflect it.

    St Louis has to go 70-57 the rest of the way just to finish at 81-81. Can they do that? Sure. Will they do that? Incredibly unlikely.
