  1. I really don't understand why Mark A. gets kudos for this. Doug Melvin, yes. But Mark A.? Yes, thank you, Mark, for reaching EXXXTTTRRAA deep into those pockets to pull out the 7.5 Million it took to seal the deal. By today's baseball standards, that is just not a lot of money. If i were to find out that we DIDN'T get Hoffman because we only wanted to give him 6.5, i would be furious. This type of move, from an ownership standpoint, is to be expected. In 2004, we decided to give Sheets about 10 million per. He was one of the best pitchers in the game at that point! Even in that year, it could be argued that 7.5 wasn't an extraordinary amount to pay a closer. Fast forward to 2009, and we will be looking at between 12-15 million to retain Sheets, who isn't as healthy as he was in 2004. He's not as good as he was in 2004. And he's not about to get any better. He has peaked, yet we would potentially pay him 12-14 million. Inflation, Suppy and Demand, call it whatever you want to call it. If Mark A. dishes out THAT kind of money for Sheets, I will personally write him a thank you note. Not that Sheets deserves that much, but we need Sheets if only for the possibility that he could have two out of three somewhat injury free seasons of <3.33 ERA.
  2. As for the Melvin bashers, and yes, that's what you are doing, give the guy a break. Who do you want him to sign? Manny Ramirez? Mark Texiera, who's price just went above and beyond BOSTON'S budget?
  3. Yeah, this would be like 99 if these types of players were actually going to start for us. As it sits, Trot has the better chance but i wouldn't be surprised if we never saw him take the field for the major league club...
  4. Bingo! This is exactly what i was thinking. As far as Melky is concerned, he may turn out to be a good player but i really had to force myself to drink the kool aid when this deal was announced. To me, it sounds more like the Yankees are just too busy adding elite players to worry themselves with a guy of Cameron's caliber.
  5. Peavy and Gallardo for the next 3 years might be even better than what CC and Sheets would have been. And for much less money. I certainly agree with this trade, especially since we won't have to give up picks for an elite player.
  6. Fuentes i'd be willing to give a shot but not for 10 mil per. He could have success here, it's not Coors.
  7. He has also stated before, in similar words, that the amount of money he has staked in the Brewers is PEANUTS compared to what he has on wall street. I met a gas station attendant in Madison who lost $6,000 of his 401K due to the recession. Just think of the kind of money Mark A. must have lost
  8. Not necessarily. If we continue to draft well then we should continue to have quality players at low costs. This last season we went all in and it cost us a player who could have stepped in and played a big role well before 2011. I'm happy with the move, but what i am saying is that we have to be smart with how we recycle players. Instead of signing Burnett we should have the ability to pluck the next Burnett from our farm system. That's the theory, at least. If the Marlins and Rays can compete on their payrolls and awful fan support there's no reason we can't with a higher payroll and great fan support.
  9. There are only two scenarios in which i like this trade as it stands: 1. We have a CF waiting to be acquired whether it is through trade or free agency, and this salary dump allows us to make the move. 2. We are secretly in the running for one of the major bats out there and are freeing up the money to sign them. About Hall... Unless the Yankees wanna give us something really outstanding for Hall and Cam, I'd keep Hall and see if the LASIK helped him at all. He could really hit before he had the eye problems.
  10. how is he getting almost as much as K Rod in terms of dollars per year? are you kidding me? or is it just assumed that any day now K Rod's arm is going to fall off due to his delivery?
  11. Didn't get the details on the deal because it just flashed on ESPN.
  12. Yes, but only because of two rare situations that occured at the same time. 1. The Chargers underestimated his talent and gave up on him early by drafting Philip Rivers, they then had a TON of salary on the books at QB. This is a problem due to the salary capped NFL. 2. At the end of a disapointing season the Chargers were trying to decide which QB to keep when, in week 17, Brees tore the labrum on his throwing side. This, and the fact that trading Rivers would have resulted in a cap penalty due to his signing bonus, made Brees a free agent. The current situation with Cleveland is the poor man's version of that QB situation.
  13. This reminds me so much of the Carlos Beltran situation. I think CC's legacy might always be that magical half season with Milwaukee, just as Beltran is remembered for that great post season with Houston. I'll take it...
  14. Wait, so if/when Wagner comes back does that make their 7,8,9 Putz, Wagner, K-Rod? That's either the best or the worst staff of all time.
  15. Man, a lot of action tonight. Is it good or bad that we haven't done anything big yet with all that extra cash sitting around? personally, i kinda like it. Nothing stupid, we already made a major gamble on CC and while i'm happy with the results and would do it all over again without a doubt, it's time to stock up on talent and continue to look long-term. Every so often we'll have the opportunity to add a big name and make a run but it's probably not the time.
  16. I'm compLETELY against signing Hoffman. He has been declining for a while but it has been masked by PETCO some. I just wouldn't do it. If we do sign him, obviously i hope he does well and it's possible he could prove me wrong.. but.. i just wouldn't do it..
  17. At what point do you say enough's enough? I love everything that CC brings to this team, but do we honestly think he will perform at last year's level consistently over the next 5 years? In a perfect world, we keep him at a rate that we can afford. Folks, 4 years 100 million is crazy enough already. I'm officially pulling myself off the CC bandwagon.
  18. Wait, Hawing, that actually IS a TGJ reference. If TGJ doesn't get that hit off of Hoffman then the Padres don't play that playoff game. So really, it was the TGJ that sent them "spiraling."
  19. Affeldt is a guy that for some reason i just never have liked. It could be because he seems to own our lefties. But yeah that's really cheap for a quality reliever.
  20. Either our standards have gotten really low or some of you have lost it! Trenni was awful. I don't even know what the girl's name was who came before her but Trenni >> Extremely Awful Girl DOES NOT MEAN Trenni = Good/Great/Awesome at her job. If Trenni is the best they can do, then find a girl who is extremely attractive, dress her accordingly, and trot her out there once in a while. Or if it's distracting the players, then find a girl who is the complete opposite and dress her completely opposite.
  21. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3674008 NEW YORK -- Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira and Ben Sheets wasted no time in filing for free agency. The trio were among 65 players who filed on the first possible day. Thursday began a 15-day window in which approximately 180 players can become free agents. Eligible players may file through Nov. 13, and teams can start negotiating money with players the following day. So what does this mean as far as arbitration is concerned? I heard we were making him an offer but i want nothing to do with it. In my opinion, i think we should let him walk and get the draft picks. But how do we go about that? Do we still have to make him an offer? So confused now.. I guess what i am asking is, since he chose free agency, is there any arbitration at all anymore? The article is a little misleading, but i don't believe that CC has filed yet. Good sign? Different thread?
  22. Here's the thing.. We HAVE to trade Prince either this offseason, this coming trade deadline, or next offseason. That's all there is to it. The only way to decide when to trade him is to ask yourself this question.. Will he or won't he hit 40+ homeruns in 2009? If the answer is yes, then you wait. But if the answer is no, which i believe that it is, then you rid yourself of him RIGHT NOW! If we do it now, we can save money to put towards CC. If we do it now, the loss of Sheets will actually be addition by subtraction due to the high quality young arm(s) we bring in. If we don't, CC is probably gone, we have crappy defense at first again, and Sheets leaving will actually be a negative. Oh, and get rid of Weeks too. For crying out loud, i've never seen a guy drop so many balls because they hit him in the heel of the glove.. Hey Rickie, you catch with the webbing.. QUACK QUACK QUACK! now get lost!
  23. Yes, count me in on the group who only knows him by Jack Z but i do appreciate everything he has done. He had the picks to do it, that's for sure, but you can't deny the fact that hey put together one of the best home-grown groups of major leaguers in recent history. I feel as though there should be a seperate Jack Z appreciation thread..
  24. In comparison, Counsell gets an almost equal amount of praise for being a "gritty" veteran who is ALWAYS (two times) in the right place at the right time.
  25. Directv here and it's looking fabulous.
