  1. I didn't say Olson is better. When I use the term "arguably better" I mean that they are similar, but you can argue one is better than the other, and you have. It's not silly to say the guy with better stats for the year is the better talent (I use fangraphs and Olson's Offense and Defense numbers were better than Freemans) so I'm not sure where the defensive metrics matter if the offensive metrics also swing to Olson. Yes Freeman has more years of data, but it's not like Olson's 2021 came out of nowhere as he put 2 earlier years of >3,5 fWAR. You can argue that there's enough noise in WAR to make the small difference between them irrelevant and I would agree. They both had similar careers through their age 27 season. Freeman also had his worst k% in his year 26 season, followed by a significant drop (that he maintained and has gotten better over time) as did Olson. If anything I think there's plenty of data that they are pretty similar. I don't think it's outrageous to assume that Olson (just entering his prime) is likely to outperform Freeman (who's age 32 season is 2022) over the next few years. Will Olson hit at the same level for another 5 years? I don't know, but I think the Braves believe that to be the case.
  2. If the Brewers win a World Series and follow it up by letting go of multiple faces of the franchise while adding younger, arguably better talent, I wouldn't bat an eye. I would probably still be hung over from the post-win celebration. Five months later? You bet!
  3. Thanks for posting that link. I believe that was pre-Cutch signing so that's a nice firm 91-92 wins. That's the best division winning % in the NL, Plus they're at 7.6% chance for winning the World Series! Yeah Baby, I like those odds. After 50+ years we need a few balls to bounce in our favor.
  4. For me it was Rizzo. Seems the market is weak for him and he could be had for the right money. I'm conflicted based on hating him for his Cubbies roots. Naw, too pricey for the Brewers. Or not?
  5. I agree. They still need to cut for signing draft picks and providing buffer. I wouldn't be surprised if they find a decent option in the draft that it will just be a matter of time before he is gone.
  6. I think Brady gets a lot of deference because of all the super bowl wins. IMHO, Favre looked and looks worse in comparison to all three. If Aaron wants to make a yearly offseason real-time TV show on his future, he certainly can try, but people got over LeBron James "Decision" after the first go-around. To me it's just noise. Now that Aaron is signed and we are getting into cap shape for 2022, my attention will be to the final pieces they add then the biggest offseason event (the Draft). Great Times for Packer Fans!
  7. 1, 2, or 3 more tries at a super bowl followed by a pretty hard, parachute-less landing seems like a reasonable risk to make and a clear indication that this is our window followed by a hard rebuild. Personally I like it as long as they build the defense into a monster.
  8. I hope I'm around long enough for the VR headsets that allow you to watch the game while overlaying Gameday with access to other live feeds going on so you can watch other games when scoring or key plays occur.
  9. I agree there's a need for at least 1, but I think we're not far from needing only 1. The cost of high def cameras is nothing today compared to a full package of salary/benefits for an umpire. You could have 4 different angles on each base plus the lines and fences covered with minimal cost for each stadium. One umpire watching the feeds could easily cover the calls needed to be made in real-time. Having the extra angles on each play would likely add to the accuracy as each umpire right now only has one POV. I wonder if there's been a study to show how much each umpire is actually involved with the game flow/decision making. I'm guess it's home, 1B, 2B, 3B in that order of "activity", but 3B could be higher than 2B depending on foul balls/check swings compared to tags at 2B.
  10. I'm guessing the umpires would object because their pay would eventually be impacted. No point paying the same if they have less work to do. We're not far from replacing the 4 umpire crew with a single guy sitting in a video room evaluating each play based on the feeds. Baseball of all the sports is the most amenable to near full automation as there is minimal contact between the teams as part of the game flow.
  11. If this is dumpster diving, show me that dumpster because I want a shot! This is a typical/perfect Brewer FA signing. As noted he hits LH pitching well and that was a huge problem last year and for a few years. Yeah he is in the sunset of his career, but don't underestimate the value of Cutch instead of a pitcher hitting. He likely will get 300-400 PA between LF/DH depending on Cain's health. Edit: He still walks at a decent rate which is another bonus. Edit(2): Full disclosure, I didn't like the JBJ signing because of the downside for his bat.
  12. I think the Brewers wanted to wait until they could announce signing Bryant, Schwarber and Correa in the same press release.
  13. I hear you, but I am sure with the final arbitration numbers and maybe a few small additions that Stearns is getting near his salary budget for the start of the season. I am surprised they even have money to toss at McCutcheon as I figured they would see how Yelich and Hiura start out before looking for offensive upgrades across the roster. Stearns did a great job last season adding Adames "mid" year so I think they will be a little conservative spending until they have a clear need.
  14. I think McCutcheon is a distressed asset (in today's market) so it makes a lot of sense that the Brewers (who seem to look for the good deals in FA) are going after him. As other's have said, we need a DH and if the numbers are right he could be a very good addition. I should add that I hope this wouldn't cut into Taylor's playing time (I don't think it would), but I really would like to see what the kid can do given the chance at near full-time ABs.
  15. Has Rodgers signed an extension? I have seen posts about his twitter comment that the 4/$200M was not accurate last week and I haven't seen an official Packers release that he signed. Did I miss something?
  16. LOL! I wouldn't be surprised if some of his idiosyncrasies are easy to ignore when you have a countdown to training camp. When you don't have that "vacation" to look forward to then even the smallest things can seem like the tipping point.
  17. 1.) Where are you from? Born in Milwaukee, Grew up in Wauwatosa, retired in New Berlin. lived in 4 states in between. 2.) Age Range? 66+ 3.) How long have you been frequenting BrewersFan.net? I was a lurker for about 5 years and just made my first post yesterday. 4.) Highest level of baseball/softball played? High School (my kids say I played with Shoeless Joe Jackson, but we all know that's a joke except for my lawyer who drafts a new will after every mention). 5.) Favorite Brewers Player, and favorite underappreciated Brewers player, and if you want, favorite current Brewers player? That's like trying to name my favorite child! I don't have a favorite, they are all special in their own way. Underappreciated? Larry Hisle. He and Sal Bando put Milwaukee on the map as a destination for free agents. His time with the Brewers was mostly impacted by injuries and the fact he was past his prime when he signed, but he is still the Brewers 3rd all-time for OPS+ at 142. 6.) Favorite Twitter follows? none. stopped social media ~10 years ago and do DIY for family/friends. 7.) Other interests outside of baseball. Woodworking, Gardening, Multimedia. 8.) Favorite part of BrewerFan.net... Informed opinions and aggregation of brewers/WI sports info. Least Favorite? pissing battles where 2 or more posters just won't stop asserting their opinion is the correct opinion.
  18. That's perfect! Now if the Brewers win 14-4 will the world end? On an unrelated topic (too soon to start a thread), does anyone know if T-Mobile will be having free mlb.com TV subscriptions for members this year? I checked my Tuesdays App and nothing shows up.
  19. That's an excellent signing for a veteran reliever. Year to year it's hard to know what you are getting, but for $2.5M that's a great risk/reward.
  20. I saw that article on mlb.com and it was pretty educational. I learnt that lackluster is now a new adjective for worst season by a major league hitter. I hope Jackie the best and hope he rebounds offensively and keeps a high level of defense, but I can't wait to see what Renfroe can do in a Brewers uni. Lackluster?! Too funny.
  21. New Site, New User, First Post. I've been a Brewerfan by default when they came to town after the carpetbaggers left town. So I guess I'm an old Brewer fan. Hope to add to what appears to be a great place to discuss baseball and the Brewers. Brewersin2022!
