  1. Dbacks start a series on Monday vs. the Cubs (@ HOU this weekend). Hope they are still in the picture by then. They are falling fast. Or at least embrace the spoiler role by playing loose, with a nothing-left-lose attitude.
  2. Yes, during the off-season, unless they make a deal with the insurance company like the Rangers did.
  3. I hope the Mets fans come out and give him a good send-off, even if he only plays an inning or two.
  4. Changing them for competitive reasons is different than for TV/financial reasons. An extreme scenario, maybe the Brewers should have changed the final home game of ours to 11 pm on the 5th since the Cubs had to be in DC for a game at 6 the next day and we had Thursday off. That would have been total crap, teams should not be allowed to change game times for competitive reasons. This is a more extreme situation and a bit different than the one last year. I was much more upset about switching the time last year. This one is a bit of an extreme situation caused by weather. I don't like it, but it's slightly less BS than the switch last year...and far and away less BS than the "rainout" game. I'm sure there are rules about changing start times, and both teams probably have to agree to it. Given the situation, I don't really have an issue with it. It should have been done earlier, but the Cubs were probably hoping that the league would do change the makeup game due to weather anyway. Also they may have had to wait for city approval if changing the time exceeded their night game limit. Does anyone know what that limit is? I remember that it was initially 18 games per season, but it is a lot more now.
  5. No, I'll root for the Dodgers to have to burn Kershaw on the final day to get into the playoffs. I hate the Cardinals and never want them to get into the playoffs. They ruin great Brewers seasons, so let them sit at home and watch.
  6. That is a big problem with the utility of WAR, especially bWAR. We've constantly heard on this board that various defensive metrics have problems with them and don't accurately reflect the quality of the defense a player has. Furthermore the extreme weigh they put on defensive positions is not reflective of current value. Sogard got a huge bonus over Braun just because he played middle infield, not because he played it well. That seems somewhat dubious just on it's face. Also with all the shifting and focus on elevating the ball, should middle infield be valued the way it might have been 30 years ago. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/baseball-positions-are-starting-to-lose-their-meaning/ If we say there is a true WAR out there, it seems that the values we are getting should all have a +/- 1.5 after them. Given that the range tends to be -2 to 10, with most players in the -.5 to 5 range, that makes it pretty marginal stat at present.
  7. It should not be the sole determining factor, on that we can agree. But if your statement goes further than that, and that it shouldn't even be one of the factors, then mind explaining what aspect of bWAR for pitchers makes you feel that? bWAR for pitchers has a black box feel that often doesn't pass the smell test. Look at Chacin's numbers and Arrieta's numbers and explain why Arrieta is a 3.3 bWAR and Chacin is 1.9 bWAR. Chacin has better numbers for Games, IP, ERA, FIP, WHIP, K9, H9, HR9, and WP. Arrieta leads only in BB9, K/BB and HBP. For batters in bWAR, look at last year's stats and explain why Sogard had a better bWAR than Braun (1.9 vs 1.2). Also the fact that there is a bWAR and an fWAR that can be significantly different makes the whole concept of a WAR stat seem less reliable. Even ignoring WAR, DeGrom's stats are impressive and worth consideration of a Cy Young award. Given that we are in the era of the reliever, it's impossible for a pitcher on a bad team to have a '72 Steve Carlton record.
  8. At the moment, my feels towards rain at similar to my feelings towards the Cards. Disgust, and l just want them to go away.
  9. A fair ball is a fair ball. It doesn't matter what the batter was doing ever (as long as he was in the box). The only place it would have mattered would be to the scorer, and they call debatable things whatever they please. If the ball had missed the bat it would have been a ball because he didn't offer at it. Since he didn't offer, it was rightly called a foul. If it somehow looked like a perfect bunt that rolled foul, it may well have been called out, but Cincy would have argued hard on that one, and with good reason.
  10. When he got shelled last year in the WS, the Astro's players said he was tipping his pitches. It seems plausible that he made changes to stop tipping his pitches which made him less effective and led to an arm injury.
  11. Why? His results and peripherals aren't good, even in AAA the last couple of years.
  12. Cubs are going to call it based on the bad forecast, and the day will be perfect.
  13. Maybe he has the Aaron Rodgers like chip on his shoulder about being passed over in the draft.
  14. Any information on his signing bonus? That might give a clue as to what the Brewers and other teams thought of him initially.
  15. He was great in his first 24 outings with the Brewers (3-1, 1.93 ERA). The game that lead to him being on the DL and the 4 games after he returned, he's fallen off a cliff. It's really not hard to believe that something is really wrong with him.
  16. He has been pitching poorly after coming back from his injury. He can't take up a bullpen slot in a pennant race pitching like that. Cutting him is a waste of 2.5 M next year, so having a phantom hammy is good for the club. Maybe he can right himself and be useful down the stretch. Since coming back from the DL he's had 4 appearances, given up 10 runs and only recorded 5 outs. One way or another, that has to go.
  17. Freeing up a AAA spot for Hernandez while picking up a lottery ticket.
  18. Interesting guy to get as a free trial. Neither Cincy or LA were able to get him to harness his stuff, so not sure if the Brewers can do anything with him. In an odd sort of way CS might actually help him. The thin air will take some of the break out of his curve, so it's less likely to dive out of the zone. Also given the known challenge pf pitching there, it might focus him on location more than raw stuff.
  19. What a crazy idea? Just put the fielders where the ball is most likely to be hit instead of equally spacing them apart on the field. The article wasn't about the use of the shift per se, but about what players, with what skill sets are in the shifted positions. The basic alignment was not anything required by rules, it was done to have the best chance of infielders getting to balls. It wasn't always that way, in the beginning first baseman played very close to the bag, then one team figured you could get more balls by moving him over and having the pitcher cover first on balls hit to the right side. The thing about the standard layout is that it requires players with certain preferred skills 2b and SS are fast / rangy with SS having a strong arm. First and 3rd need quick reactions, but need not necessarily be fast and cover ground. The new paradigm the Brewers are using is saying you not only don't have to put players in the traditional place, you don't have to have the traditional skill sets if your spray charts are good enough. Will it work? Will the defense still be saving a lot of runs? We have two months to get an idea.
  20. Sign Greg Holland to a AAA contract, and bring him up for September or injury replacement and have him put up zeros in three straight games against the Cards. Karma demands that this must happen.
  21. Championship seasons always are fondly remembered.
  22. Well if he develops, maybe the Brewers will sign him to a big FA contract in 5 years.
