  1. I usually like to give a guy the benefit of the doubt for a full season. Usually. Brian Anderson was a golf guy his first season, Provus was a bit forced (and had the knock of following JP). In Block's case I'm having a hard time doing it. I have yet to find anything redeeming about him and I'm hoping he says something on air that gets him canned. I'd rather listen to Kent, or a robot reading the game tracker output. Block makes me want to turn off the radio. His delivery is slow. He softens vowels. He reminds me of the worst of announcers from other teams - boring. He isn't dry, he is deader than the Monty Python Parrot. Stay healthy Bob, this guy cannot be allowed to replace you.
  2. Looking at the Lucroy vs Varitek graphs in the original article http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15093 I wonder if the number of runs saved is an under estimate. It really looks like the Brewers pitchers are living on that low outside corner more than the Red Sox pitchers did with Varitek. If pitchers are not confident in getting the calls on the best pitches, they have to come in with more hittable pitches. Maybe the analysis takes this into account, but it's not clear from the analysis in the articles.
  3. On fan support: "Some people like me. I'm not sure why.'' That almost sounds like one of Ueker's lines.
  4. The fan forum button on the right side of the main page is a dead link to the very old board: http://pub123.ezboard.com/bbrewersfandemonium
  5. Not a chance. With no Fielder behind him, he's going to expand the zone (something he's always been prone to do anyway), not contract it, because he'll feel an extra burden to produce runs. Intentional walks may be up but they take the bat out of the hands of the best hitter on the team. That won't help the offense. Unless Ramirez and Hart/Weeks (whoever they put in the 5 spot) turn into a black hole, Braun shouldn't put too much pressure on himself. Last year Weeks and Hart missed a combined half the season, leaving McGehee batting 5th. I could see Braun pressing a lot if he gets suspended and tries to make up for lost time.
  6. I haven't seen this discussed before, but could the Brewers be a better offensive team this year than last, even with the loss of Fielder? Last year Fielder had an impressive .981 OPS, but McGehee clocked in with an anemic .626 OPS. Rameriz had a good .871 and Gamel put up .912 in AAA. If Ramirez puts up his career .842, then Gamel will only need to put up a .766 OPS to give the Brewers a better combined OPS from the corner infielders. I realize just adding the OPS is a bit simplistic, but Ramirez, Fielder and McGehee all had >= 600 PA's last year, so things shouldn't be too skewed. So does a good player and a decent player create more offense than a great player and a poor player?
  7. I'm guessing the timeline was something like this. Melvin learns of Braun's positive test. Melvin places a bid. Ramirez signs pinning the payroll. Aoki has a workout that is good but not eye-popping. Melvin and Co. not certain Aoki is worth all that much to the Brewers, especially in their current budget. While not ideal, I think Melvin can decline to sign this guy without seeming like a total chain yanker.
  8. Seems promising, but he'll need a year to grow into the role. The first year of a new announcer is always rough, with them feeling the way with a new team and us adapting to the new guy. Hope Uke does not have any health problems this year.
  9. I still don't get how an anti-viral would cause the spike, unless he used a cortisone cream on the affected area that came out in the test and registered as testosterone. As for heat, well he will get the embarrassment factor, plus extra heat from any action he got last season without giving fair warning. I don't think any players will give him grief about it, given the prevalence of the virus in the general population, and the promiscuity that can come in their situations, I wouldn't be surprised if 50% or more of the single ball players have it.
  10. If Pujols goes to the Marlins and Fielder goes to Seattle, that will be a pretty good outcome for the Brewers, no matter what else happens.
  11. I was hoping for a cancellation so the Bucks games would not preempt the Brewers games at the start of the season.
  12. Given what is left of Sheet's right arm, you may as well list him as a left-handed pitcher.
  13. Does anyone know what the average of the 125 highest paid players was last year?
  14. I can't blame Cory for looking into a better opportunity right now, given that he doesn't know how long he will be behind Bob, and there is no guarantee that he will get the #1 position after that. Cory has grown into the position well. I think part of the perception problem is that announcers take a while to grow into the position. On the TV side, I though BA was terrible his first year, sounding like someone who was still calling golf instead of baseball. Now he's good enough to get tabbed by TBS for the post season. If Cory goes, I hope Uecker sticks around a couple of seasons to break him in properly, because I don't expect to like him much the first year.
  15. If they offered Betancourt arby and he accepted, the Brewers would wind up paying him more than the 6M option they declined, so I don't think he will be offered arbitration. Hopefully Prince goes to a team that will give the Brewers a first, not a second. K-Rod will likely go to a winner.
  16. They do a good job bringing Reds fans and Brewers fans together.
  17. I think I would be more disappointed that you about losing to the Phillies, but losing to the Cards would be intolerable. Words cannot describe how bad that would be, even including the words not allowed here. I still have 29 years of lingering hate for the Cardinals ruining 82. Not now. Not this year. WIN IT ALL!
  18. Win it to put the ghost of 82 to bed. For nearly 30 years we've looked back and celebrated a team that *lost* the worlds series, because we have nothing else.
  19. 1982 ALCS game 5 (3 and 4 were also memorable, but not as much as 5) 1982 WS game 4 (5 was a little less memorable because there wasn't a big comeback) 1980 - April 12th - Two grand slams in one inning game 1976 - September 17th- Hank Aaron night (also my first game) Sadly, I haven't been to a particularly memorable game since 82.
  20. Sucks big time that they are on at the same time. Maybe the Packers can do us a favor by going up 35-0 in the first half against the sorry Denver team so we can all watch the Brewers in peace. Conversely I'd be fine if the Brewers put up a 10 spot in the first http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. Right now I miss not having all the Cubs games on WGN. Funny listening to Uke call the play by play for the Cubs game.
  22. Is is just me or did Morgan duck under the last pitch to draw the walk?
