  1. I would think the Brewers could trade him for just about anything before they cut him. Why would they do this? Trading him means you have to sign him and likely eat a bit of that salary. Cutting him means you pay 1/6th of the salary. It makes no economical sense to try to trade him unless you think teams will value him at the arbitration salary (which clearly, they don't)You might not have to eat any salary to trade him. Didn't this happen to Rafael Soriano a few year ago? K-Rod might be much more attractive to some teams on a 1 year deal than a multi-year deal. Even if the Brewers don't get anything back, it's better than eating 1/6 of his salary.
  2. Melvin is doing his best Boras imitation. "We're have Gamel at 1B, we're good." There is no harm in hanging around to see what offers come in. No need to set the market.
  3. Now there's only one way to continue this rivalry: Pitching coach Julian Tavarez.
  4. It's interesting to see opinions of this trade unfold on Twitter. Olney and Ben from MLBTR love it for SF, Posnanski loves it for KC. No middle ground on this one.
  5. It did. But, I must say I was a little relieved. My first thought when I saw the link online this morning was that it was going to be an "I've decided to sell the team" letter.
  6. Why would it be hilarious? Francona is a very good manager. He had to fall on the sword this year, but if that team has fewer injuries or wins one more game, the Red Sox make the playoffs and he's still the manager.
  7. Thanks for addressing my questions. Am I remembering correctly that type A FAs always net at least two sandwich-round picks (after the first & second rounds)? Or do even teams with protected 1st-round picks also still lose their 2nd-rounders, in addition to the departing FA's former team netting two sandwich-round picks? So like for your K-Rod example -- wouldn't the Brewers still get a pair of sandwich picks too, regardless of the protection (or priority to other signed FAs) of a team's picks? I guess my larger point is that even if the Brewers wind up with a worst-case scenario with their type A & B FAs, [insert re-signing Betancourt joke here], they'll still get quite a haul of draft picks. This is a really critical offseason for the franchise, & I hope they don't opt for another 'all-in' type of season. This is a really special opportunity to retool for the future, & build around an already strong foundation for the next 5-10 seasons. The way I understand it:--Type A - 1st round pick (if the team is in the top half of the standings) OR 2nd round pick (team in bottom half of standings) PLUS sandwich pick between 1st & 2nd round. --Type B - Sandwich pick between 1st & 2nd round.
  8. I'd bet LaRussa manages it. All-Star rosters are a double-switching dream.
  9. Keith Law's reaction on Twitter was that the Cards need to call Francona. It does make sense - after LaRussa the next logical step is a manager that doesn't mind a little drinking in the dugout.
  10. Or it could indicate they're trying to trade Wolf. Or Narveson. Or Marcum. They could also keep all of them and have an awesome rotation. Maybe Greinke has indicated he's not interested in an extension. There are any number of possibilities besides "souring on" Greinke, which you've made clear (in roughly 20 threads) is your opinion. Wilson wouldn't be my first FA option, but if you're not at least kicking the tires on every free agent, you're not doing your job as a GM.
  11. I'll give you the Hardy trade. Scutaro was lost on waivers before he ever played a major league game. This was after his FOURTH season in AAA, so it's not like he was a can't-miss prospect. Technically, you are correct - Escobar was traded for our current shortstop. I think there might have been some other pieces to that trade. Personally, I think they traded Escobar at the peak of his value, which is exactly what people are always clamoring for the Brewers to do.
  12. But the flip side of that is that at no point this year did the Brewers have a lineup that made opposing teams think "There are no holes in this lineup." Playing against the Brewers, you had 1/3 of the lineup that got on base less than 28% of the time. Those are relatively easy outs.
  13. People keep throwing around $20MM and $30MM from this new TV deal. Has this been confirmed anywhere? I know that it was reported that they have a new deal, but I don't remember hearing any hard numbers.
  14. I can't believe any marquee free agent would go to Florida. No fan support and horrible owners, who had several run-ins with players this year alone. Money talks, I suppose.
  15. I think they'll have less than $25MM to spend. MLBTR has a good breakdown.
  16. All the pressure is on STL tonight, and the Brewer bats bust out. Greinke pitches just well enough to win.

  18. Plenty of blame to go around, so I guess I'll pile on. I've been saying for two months that this team is going to get burned by not having a power bat on the bench. Down 1 in the 9th and we have to debate between McGehee and Kottaras. We couldn't have gone after Giambi, Thome, Branyan, etc.? And yes, I realize they can't do much other than pinch hit, but I'm pretty sure we could swap out Taylor Green's roster spot without losing anything.
  19. Historically, I think the Globe has been the mouthpiece for Red Sox ownership. Most of that info likely came from ownership, which has not been shy about passing the blame for this season. I'm sure none of this would have come out (especially in the Globe) if the Sox had won one more game. It is a good read, though.
  20. And he's hitting 2nd because he's 4-11 lifetime (with 7 of those ABs in 1999-2000!) against Carpenter? Ugh.
  21. But he did pass on Cruz when he was DFA'd, just like every other GM in baseball.
  22. They are magical. It's written in the stars.
  23. I heard last night that this makes Sandburg a serious candidate, as Theo tried to hire him for Boston's AAA team within the last couple of years.
