  1. I think Sarfate will earn a well-deserved spot in the bullpen to start the season. Ditto. He's got the stuff to get the job done. Hopefully he can reign in his control. He's out of options, so he has to stick. I can't see the Brewers letting an arm like his walk, but then again, this isn't the 2004 Brewers where they could get away with carrying guys they basically couldn't use. I like his chances of winning a pen spot on talent alone. Worst case, I see him in the pen out of ST, and at some point (if he doesn't have his control issues figured out), a difficult decision may have to be made. I'm pulling for him. Good guy, as others have stated.
  2. Jersey sales don't help the home team much. Jersey sales go into a league-wide pool, which is divided evenly among the 30 teams. I see your point though. However, if Johnson doesn't stay healthy (which is probably more likely than him making 34 starts IMO), acquiring him could actually hurt the bottom line more than it helps. Also, is the concessions average really $25 per fan? That seems waaaay high. But, I don't want to split hairs - I'm just curious if that is an actual figure or not.
  3. I'd prefer to keep the better all-around player, which is Jenkins IMO. However, he also is probably the most likely to be dealt. The Crew has other lefty-hitting OF options in Nix, Gross, and Gwynn. I think its still possible for both Jenkins and Mench to return. However that would create a major roster issue, assuming Melvin and Co continue to look at Bill Hall as an OF. Which begs the question... Do you think there is any wiggle room in DM's mind regarding playing Hall in the outfield full-time? Is there any chance Hall could go back to his super utility role, adding LF and CF to his list of positions he can play (that would give him 5 different positions - it should be easy enough to get him playing time)?
  4. Bullpen help. If Jenkins and / or Mench are dealt, I will be very disappointed if it doesn't net the Brewers at least one solid RP with a good track record. I'd rather see Mench be the one to go, but with Gross still in the mix as a LH hitter, I would imagine Jenkins would be the most likely trade piece.
  5. Thanks for the "stats" comparison. Obviously, you chose only the ever-popular OPS, which is a good stat. It just doesn't always tell the whole story, like any other stat. Rios is finally growing into his body and becoming the player that was projectedt all along. It took him a while to develop his power (he hit only 1 HR his rookie season in 426 ABs). Hart pales in comparison defensively - I don't think there is any debate there. For the record, both players have similar sub-.800 MLB OPS's. Rios is slightly better. (Hart does have fewer ABs) Afterall, major league stats are what really matters at this point. If you look at the full package with an unbiased eye, Rios is clearly superior to Hart IMO. That's not to say Hart won't be a good player - he probably will.
  6. You slough off Soriano pretty quickly. I guess 40/40 guys don't impress you much. Not sure where I did that. Maybe briggs can show me. I said "other than Soriano...." Soriano is a phenomenal offensive player. He would make any team better. But, he can't do it himself. My point was, the other players the Cubs have signed were either there own players (no improvement there) or players at the same level or below what they already had in-house, but at a much higher cost. You can't tell me that signing DeRosa, Marquis, Ward, Floyd, etc makes the Cubs better. At least not if they are being looked upon as major contributors (Ward will be a pinch hitter, as long as Lee stays healthy). Who is Floyd an improvement over? Certainly not Murton or Jones. Is Marquis at $7 million any better than the $400,000 options the Cubs have in Guzman, Marmol, and Marshall? DeRosa is a part-time or platoon player that is going to be cast into a full-time role, at least at the beginning. Good luck with that. Lilly was a decent signing. I can't fault the Cubs too much on him, other than to say that he is a fly ball pitcher in a homer-friendly park. I stand by my belief that the Cubs will have a $125 million dollar payroll and be a .500 (at best) team.
  7. I have nothing against Hardy. I am a Hardy fan. Hopefully he can stay healthy at some point. I'm not knocking Hardy. All I am saying is that if you're offering me Rios for Hardy, you, my friend, have a deal. I'll gladly give up a good defensive SS that one day might become an above average hitter for a future star that will one day be a 30/30 player and already can be considered a 5-tool player. At this point, Hardy = Royce Clayton, and that may not be fair to Clayton. Toronto already has Royce Clayton. Now, I'm sure they would rather have Hardy than Clayton. But not at the expense of Rios. Somebody stated it perfectly in an earlier post: If Rios came up thru the Brewers system, we would probably consider him untouchable. Heck, Corey Hart can't hold a candle to Rios, and some people on here think he is the 2nd coming.
  8. I wouldn't trade Hardy for Rios straight up I would do that deal everyday and twice on Sundays. Of course, you would have to leave Bill Hall at shortstop where he belongs. Problem is, there is no way the Blue Jays would take that offer seriously. They would be sitting around waiting for the rest of the offer to come in from the Brewers, namely which SP would be included.
  9. The Cubs have definitely cornered the market on trash. Has a team ever spent so much money on absolutely nothing? Other than Soriano, the best players the Cubs have signed have been their own players (Ramirez, Wood, Miller). Signing your own players doesn't make you better, last I checked. Lilly is a nice #4 pitcher who will be the Cubs #2. So, the Cubs are spending $130 million to become a .500 team, IMO. (If Lee and Prior and Co. stay healthy)
  10. I sure don't see Rios as a 900-1000 OPS guy. He could be, of course, but his first half last year looks like the outlier. If he were 22-23, I'd agree, but at 26, I don't. It is impossible for me to look at Rios' season and not come to the conclusion that the staph infection sabotaged what would have been a big, big season for him. He was absolutely on fire in the first half prior to the infection. Rios couldn't walk on his infected leg for a few days. He came back as quickly as he possibly could - probably too quick - and struggled mightily. This is exactly the type of young player that I would take a chance on. At one time, he was Toronto's top prospect and one of the top 10 in all of baseball. He has all of the tools - speed, developing power, hits for avg and OPS, and has a cannon for an arm. Unfortunately, a player of Rios' caliber will easily land Toronto a good starting pitcher if the Jays decide to pull the trigger. SP is not something Milwaukee can afford to part with at this point.
  11. If he can play CF he is worth the play. I'm not sure he actually can do that though. Rios can definitely handle CF, IMO. He has plenty of speed and range, and he has a true RF arm (cannon). He has played CF on occassion in Toronto each of the past few years. Without Vernon Wells in Toronto, Rios would probably be the CF there. He's a better RF, but perfectly capable in CF. While its true that Rios has had only one really good half-season, he probably would have had a monster year last year if not for the staph infection around the all star break. That completely derailed his season. We'll never know for sure. Still, its not like he came out of nowhere. He was once the Jays top prospect, and his 6'6" frame projects well for power to develop (his HR totals have gone up each year). The guy is a rising star, IMO. But, like others have posted, the Jays should be able to get a starting pitcher for him, and that wouldn't bode well for the Brewers.
  12. I'd like the odds for Milwaukee. Toss up, IMO. He's from California and still has a home there (I saw it reported somewhere that he's from Oklahoma - he was born in Ok City but grew up in CA, went to high school in CA, lives in CA, etc).
  13. So, the Brewers get the 2 best players in the trade (Santana & Crawford)? Obviously, I'd love for that to happen, but can't see it shaking out this way. I can't imagine that Crawford is available, except in a blockbuster IMO.
  14. I've only seen mention of Taveras being on the move again in reference to Rocco Baldelli. Maybe I'm missing a story somewhere. C. Villanueva ? D. Sarfate? G. Aquino? I gotta believe Villanueva will either be in the rotation in Milwaukee or in the rotation in Nashville. I don't see the point of him in the bullpen in Milwaukee. Sarfate should be given every opportunity to make the team, since he is out of options and arms like his don't just show up on your doorstep every day.
  15. "market value" be damned, the Brewers payroll is only so big, and what would a contract like that do to arbitration or extension negotiations with a pitcher who is IMO better, like Capuano? Capuano would not be compared to Suppan in arbitration. Cappy will only be compared to other players with very similar MLB service time. A good example of this would be Carlos Zambrano, if he goes to arby this year. He will get substantially less than he would if he was a free agent this year. My guess is the Cubs will try to buy out his last year of arby by signing him to a multi year deal now, but we'll have to wait and see.
  16. Sox just signed JC Romero. (that is probably the other guy that had a "down" year last year)
  17. I just don't know why I want him so bad OPS is a nice stat, but it can't always be used. If you are looking at lead off hitters or guys who are primarily speed players, a .700ish OPS can be acceptable IMO. If OPS was the only thing that mattered, players like Juan Pierre would have no value. Obviously that's not the case. Its a balancing act. If what is lacking in power can be made up for in speed in the form of taking extra bases, stolen bases, etc, you still have a very valuable player. That's probably why you like Crisp. He is capable of making things happen with his speed, even if his power numbers are lacking. You can't expect every player to have an .850 OPS. There is no such thing as a flawless stat, unfortunately.
  18. I definitely wish Yost would adopt a pitching philosophy a little closer to LaRussa's. That could happen if the Brewers had any reliable relievers (non-closers). Last year, Yost's hands were tied IMO. He had nobody in setup that he could really trust (especially in July and August), except Shouse for the most part. Hopefully some of those yahoos in the pen get things straightened out and / or new guys are acquired.
  19. The Sox could use a backup catcher as well... I believe the Sox have signed (or at least agreed to terms) with Doug Mirabelli for 2007. Happened just recently.
  20. At the very least, its encouraging that Melvin thinks he can put together a competitive offer.
  21. I'll pass on DJ. Though, he does induce ground balls. I'll still pass though.
  22. I'd take Suppan over Meche and Lilly. I agree. Suppan vs Meche is no contest. Suppan vs Lilly depends mostly on how much you value strikeouts, specifically stats like K/9 or K/BB. Where Suppan lacks in K/9, he makes up for in his ground ball / fly ball ratio IMO. Also Lilly is a lefty, in case that matters to anybody - doesn't to me.
  23. This one appears to be dead. Philly supposedly asked for Mike Gonzalez and Solomon Torres. Too much to give up for one year of Lieber.
  24. Question.... Why aren't the Cardinals making a push for Suppan? With all the pitchers they have missed out on so far, I thought for sure Suppan would be headed back to STL. But, from everything I've read, the Cardinals are showing no interest at this point.
