  1. I only have experience with UVerse internet, and while the service is decent, the customer service is absolutely atrocious. I was supposed to get a promo rate, didn't, called 8 times and waited on hold for a half hour, was assured each time that they fixed it and I had a credit on my account for my over-payments. Next, my account was sent to their freaking collections department because I didn't pay the bill after the customer service person said not to because I had been paying double for 5 months and had a $120 credit. The letter told me that "this is your final opportunity to pay voluntarily". Sounds more like what a loan shark or Walter White would tell you.
  2. Earlier this year when the cards were dominating it was in large part due to their success with runners in scoring position, which translates into RBI, which is the name of the game. Scoring/driving in runs. Still, we have better measures of how well a batter hits, and how he hits with runners on or in scoring position than a count of how many he drove home. I don't care so much about the number of opportunity-bound performances, as it's more useful to know the probability of a given outcome. 3-4 with 3 solo homers is more predictive of offensive prowess than 1-4 with a bases-loaded double. I'll take a guy who has a higher probability of reaching base or getting XBH than the guy with a higher RBI count who performs worse in rate stats.
  3. Also, msc, that same laptop that you bought seems to be on sale on woot today. How do you like it so far? Came back to post that, actually. Plus it went down by 10 bucks. Except for the Windows 8, I'm really happy with it. I'd definitely make the same purchase again. It's relatively fast and has plenty of storage and a decent screen for the price. A major reason for the upgrade was that my old Vaio lacked HDMI output for movies and my router lagged when streaming them. The new one will display video on my television beautifully. MLB.tv looks better than it did through my PS3.
  4. There's no need to go over $600-700 unless you're a gamer or run fancy editing programs. I'm typing this on a new Toshiba with 8GB of RAM and 750GB of storage. I paid $369 on woot for it last month. http://tech.woot.com/offers/toshiba-15-6-quad-core-laptop-3 I'd also like to add that Windows 8 sucks. It's what I'm running on my new laptop, but 7 is much better, IMO. People gripe and moan about every new version of Windows when it's released, and I've concluded that they were wrong every time and began ignoring them. They were finally right this time. The best way to describe it is "Microsoft tried to get cute".
  5. Are you proposing we stop cheering for players because maybe they took steroids? He's saying we'd still be cheering for Weeks if he took steroids instead of letting his body break down and struggle to recover naturally. I think it's a valid point: had Weeks roided up and it allowed him to come back at full speed in 2011, he'd have been praised as an invincible monster.
  6. A simple correlation of HGH levels with youth is only enough at best to entertain future research. You could easily obtain almost identical correlations with height, and conclude we need to get shorter. I was gonna say diaper use, but no, that comes back around the time you're most prone to cancer. Thus, it both protects and leaves you vulnerable.
  7. I think we should be safe from that option vesting: my gut says 5% chance. Weeks has only broken 600 twice in his career and tends to go to crap in May. Coming back from an injury, a deep slump, and a couple of sub-par years will give them plenty of reasons to insert Scooter and keep him under 600 even if he doesn't get injured.
  8. I was listening to the DFW ESPN guys this afternoon on the drive home and they were universally happy about this. I guess when you don't care at all about money, it looks good, but they won't be so happy when the team passes on free agents this winter because they owe him $13.5MM next year at 33 years old.
  9. One really obvious thing is to not add salt at the table and to avoid it if at all possible while cooking. A teaspoon contains more sodium than anyone at any age is supposed to consume in a day. I'm sure you're onto this already, but the salt shaker contributes only a small amount of our sodium intake (unless you just dump it on). Most of it's already in the stuff you buy. Processed food, as you mentioned, is a complete disaster for those who can't handle lots of sodium. My wife has to be on a low sodium diet due to cochlear hydrops, and fortunately, she's a good cook. We've scrapped almost all convenience foods and make most things from fresh ingredients. The real key is an herb garden. I built 3ft x 6 feet of raised garden boxes in my yard that I use to grow 3 kinds of basil, rosemary, thai peppers, oregano, 2 kinds of parsley, spearmint, chives, green onions, cilantro, and dill. The herbs allow you to pack in tons of flavor without adding a bunch of sodium. When they need to be trimmed and grow faster than we can consume them, I dry or freeze the excess to last through the winter.
  10. The point isn't moot because it's a question about how MLB waivers work. It would still be pertinent if a team claims a guy like Michael Young. I found these: http://www.purplerow.com/2009/2/19/762532/mlb-transactions-part-thre http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=667:waivers&catid=44:business-of-baseball-glossary&Itemid=75 The relevant part (under Revocable Major League Waivers): Like outright waivers, a player with a no-trade clause who is claimed must be pulled back if the player’s no-trade clause allows him to block a deal to the claiming club. However, the player may waive the no-trade clause and join the claiming club.
  11. Braun could come flat out and say that he took PEDs and people would still be defending him... It's important to consider why his defenders are defending him, and what arguments they oppose. I personally think there's a 1 in 5 million chance that he never used, so I don't defend him there. However, I can't stand the high horses that have been mounted by too many people freaking out about how he's the "Lance Armstrong of Baseball" and should have his contract voided and receive a lifetime ban. The "defenders" camp shrinks considerably if you only include those who think he's innocent. Lets say that this was Yadier Molina instead of Braun, would anyone have different opinions? In my case, no. I dislike A-Rod as much as Molina and I disagree with the fits of histrionics people have engaged in over his PED use. It's really weird to me how A-Rod and Braun are the only awful human beings to many observers, while the other guys are simple cheaters who received a just punishment.
  12. UHF, and it's not even close. Sadly, not enough people have any idea what I'm talking about. We eat red snapper somewhat regularly, and my wife will now beat me to it and say "I know, veeeery tasty". When someone states their last name as McIntyre (e.g., Jamie McIntyre on NPR), I correct them in my head with "McInTOSH, at your service".
  13. The martyrdom by both sides when there's a dispute between a network and a cable provider is priceless. It's everything we love about horrible slimy political campaign ads, but has only the most trivial impact on the real world.
  14. I'd rather pay more for companies to risk theft and offer packages that can be opened. I don't do this often, but I've been known to make store employees open packages for me before I walk out. I also hate theft-resistant packaging. Can't they just seal it with some sort of pin that needs to be released at the register like they do with pants or video games? Also, I've bought some $2-3 things that came in ridiculous packaging, and that makes no sense. The garden hose I recently bought was wrapped in 3 or 4 very tight, very heavy-duty plastic ties. In order to cut it, I had to use a pretty serious knife that just barely had room to slide in there. I felt like a surgeon, as one tiny slip and the brand new hose would be punctured. I'm guessing the package was chosen in order to save $.04 vs heavy twist ties.
  15. I assume they were from Japan since they were wearing signed Japanese jerseys and were shouting at Aoki in a language that was not English. At one point they got up from their seats and just left their things sitting on the bleachers for two innings. Your assumption has a 99.9999999% probability of being true, as this is totally normal behavior in Japan. There, like here, you mark your seat by leaving something there. However, Americans leave junk like an empty tray, a cup, or hat you don't care about on top of a table to indicate that it's taken. In Japan, I've watched people lay down a purse or a cell phone on a table to reserve it before they get up to go order or use the restroom. Property theft there is just not very common (except pick-pocketing in some areas), so people don't grow up learning to be afraid of it. This happens in busy areas of Tokyo, not just small towns, and it blows my mind. Since this thread will be locked sooner than later, I have made a thread on the political board to continue the discussion: We've cruised within millimeters with a couple of comments. Everyone please remember that this isn't the Yahoo News comments section.
  16. The day after the Braun suspensions, the local ESPN guys were throwing a hissy fit about how Braun got off easy and is the slimiest person who has ever lived. Today, the same dudes were talking about their own guy (Nelson Cruz) facing suspension and the talk turned to how this would impact the Rangers' season and Cruz's prospects in free agency this winter.
  17. .305/.389/.469 Yokohama is getting fully Plushed.
  18. I guess I fail to see how the stats don't show the Yuni is one of the worst players I the majors. Has nothing to do with being a nerd. I share your confusion. It's claiming that only the pencil-necked dorks think today was hotter than yesterday, ignoring that we have thermometers that can actually tell us such things. Three digit numbers are for math camp losers.
  19. And these young guys need guys in the clubhouse to show them how to handle a long season like this, or any 162 game season. Lots of ups and downs in every season, and the young guys need to be shown how to deal with it. We have enough old guys in Ramirez, Lohse, and Gonzalez. Still, this is the coaching staff's job. If they can't handle it, they can pay Yuni $50K to be the Director of Dealing With Failure. However, I really wouldn't advocate putting Yuni in that role, as he frequently appears apathetic.
  20. Yeah, I'm not sure what the legal definition of a gag order has to do with it. I have a signed non-compete agreement with my employer which was not issued by a judge, yet I still can't open a competing business in my spare time or I'll be fired and sued. So I guess he's pointing out that it's not a judge's gag order, but left out that it's probably a binding agreement that he not speak until given permission. Whoop-de-friggin'-doo! Functionally, what does it matter if the end result is that he's prohibited from talking?
  21. I keep thinking that no matter what Braun says, there will still be tons of people who will find it unsatisfactory. He's put himself in the unenviable position of now never pleasing everyone -- and he'll never even come close. We live in an age of people freaking out about every tidbit regarding a royal baby from another country. We've become accustomed to getting every detail right away, so even "I used [drug name] for X cycles in 2009, 2010, and 2011" wouldn't be sufficient. People would want a a 2-hour sit-down interview where he breaks into tears multiple times. All I'd really care to know was how long he used. This would help predict how well he'll play going forward. If he used during his whole career, we can fear declining skills. If he used for half of one season and was clean for the rest, we can feel pretty confident that he'll continue to be worth his salary.
  22. I cannot watch any more of Yuniesky Betancourt. In addition to having very little talent, dude's lazier than the town drunk.
  23. Zany idea: put a big ol' beer stein at the bottom of Bernie's slide. Also, tell fans that Yuniesky Betancourt will be handed release papers during the 7th inning stretch of a randomly-selected game. "You're the GM": lucky winner gets to place a waiver claim on a washed-up AAAA player and then promote him when rosters expand on September 1st.
  24. It seems that he believes in the Three True Outcomes.
  25. Yeah, I've seen that a few places. How in the heck was his life ruined? ESPN trumpeted a story all over the world that they got from a "leak", and what never ever should have been public became very public. It's not Braun's fault that the guy didn't get to remain anonymous like he should have.
