  1. I want to get a tablet to watch games on (going with the broadband Extra Innings instead of the cable one this season) but I don't really know anything about them. Just a heads-up: since Apple has weird phobia of Flash, you have to get a separate app to watch it on iPad, and it's like $15. I think you can get it free if you spend an extra $20 for a premium account.
  2. Since the idea of Izturis ever holding a bat in his hands, let alone starting for a month because of an injury, scares the life out of me, I'd be pretty happy if they got him to camp with a non-guaranteed deal.
  3. Because he has a $1.5MM buyout, Wolf would cost $8.5MM to keep for 2013. If he pitches well again this year, you could do far worse on a 1 year deal for a healthy average starter.
  4. I don't care about looks or fancy handling. I need something with cargo space and people space and 25 mpg or better would be great. We have a Volvo V50 and have been absolutely thrilled with it. Plenty of cargo space, rides smooth, and gets about 28mpg. Jeep Liberty is also pretty solid for a smaller SUV. I avoid VW's, as they can be really difficult and expensive to fix. My brother works in the service department of a VW dealer and says a 3-year lease on a new VW is a great idea, but anything older than that is asking for more trouble than you'd get from other major brands.
  5. Though I've never been to Pittsburgh, as a bird person the National Aviary would probably be destination #2 after PNC park.
  6. I remember giggling when a few HR people called when I was applying for jobs out of grad school. Not one of them could pronounce "curriculum vitae", and that made me realize that they probably never got them from applicants.
  7. I'm not sad Prince is over, I'm happy Prince happened. 'Tis better to have loved and lost than to have been excited about Brad Nelson.
  8. The Houston Adult-Onset Diabetics.
  9. No doubt about it: Izturis is not any good. Unlike Betancourt, though, he can play 3 positions competently and was signed to be an emergency-plan utility infielder on a minor league deal. If that were Yuni's role, and his salary, nobody would've really had a problem with him.
  10. You can't honestly think that the Rangers are concerned that Hamilton is gonna go back to being addicted to heavy drugs do you? They keep alcohol out of team celebrations because of him and pretty much employ someone to follow him around on the road to make sure he's not doing drugs. So yes.
  11. Gamel's the most obvious choice. This is largely because the organization hasn't tested him sufficiently in the bigs before getting to the point where he'd be thrust into a starting spot without a viable backup. My 2nd choice is a PTBNL reliever who will be given too many chances despite sucking. Perhaps Parra.
  12. I highly doubt Morgan will be traded. He's too marketable for The Brewers to trade him. Seeing that Aoki's left handed, there may be a chance that Morgan could be traded, but I just don't see why the Brewers would ditch the marketability that T-Plush brings. Exactly what I was thinking as I read through the thread. Plush sold tons of T-Shirts and the team seems pretty giddy about their attendance numbers. Morgan's the type of "fan favorite" who sticks around as long as he's cheap and productive. The return you'd get on trading those types is unlikely to be enough to make up for the anger of the casual fan who just jumped on the bandwagon and started throwing cash at merchandise and tickets. To us nerds, it seems perfectly reasonable to trade him if you get a decent return, because Schafer needs to get a shot eventually, but the masses tend to be nowhere near as objective about players. Just look at All-Star voting.
  13. Argh. He's the guy I wanted the Brewers to land this year, shifting Hart to 1B and playing Green at 3B. I liked Beltran/Hart/Green better than Hart/Gamel/Ramirez.
  14. his batting style is similiar to Ichiro They kind of all bat like that over there. Does anyone know the origin or reason for the popularity of that hitting style? I watch quite a few Japanese games, and it seems like everyone pulls off the ball as they swing.
  15. Seems like he would be a Yost type of player. Yost apparently thought he had "plus hands and plus hands". That's the kind of guy you'd kill to get back.
  16. What's am I not getting about the Kubel deal with Arizona? They paid $15MM for a defensive downgrade and 5 years of extra age.
  17. I really have concerns that someone who loves to shoot off with his mouth like that would make a decent teammate. I've worked with people like that before (the worst was a PETA member who'd scream at people that fishing or wearing leather was murder) , and publicly you may say they're "a character", but almost nobody likes them.
  18. My guess was $3.5MM, and they were a bit over that. The problem is, you pretty much had to either go after him or give a ton of money to Furcal (I'm guessing we'd have had to go a bit higher than what the Cards gave) or Rollins - unless you wanted Yuni. Gonzalez' agent knew he had us where he wanted us and squeezed out extra cash.
  19. I'm approaching ambivalence now that we know the financials. I was quite worried that this would approach $45MM, or would go 4 years. At 2 years/$26MM, I'd be happy; 3/$42MM or 4/$48MM and I'd be disgusted.
  20. Awesome news. I'd thought they were simply going to non-tender him after signing Ramirez, so to get even an average bullpen arm instead is a nice turn of events. They've committed to Ramirez and have Green at league minimum who should be fine as a backup. Keeping McGehee made no sense at all when he's not going to win the starting job back, and would get far too expensive for a backup without defensive versatility.
  21. Do you really think we are going to replace him with a complete scrub? Besides, a mythical AAAA player would be the definition of a replacement player. I'm unsure why we're dancing around words and replacing "hack" with "replacement". I've underlined, italicized, and bolded portions of the original quote for your convenience: the dropoff from Braun to a complete scrub could be near 3 wins over 50 games Now's where you come back and tell me it couldn't be near 3 wins, especially given this organization's tendency to fall for some junk OF after a nice spring training.
  22. They'd still get caught if using those treatments, though. I can't believe that MLB or other leagues would allow TRT without huge, gigantic amounts of evidence that the player actually had a level of testosterone which required treatment. That case seems nearly impossible, as someone with very low testosterone levels is probably not going to develop into a pro athlete to begin with. I can't take anyone seriously when they say "big pharma" multiple times in an article.
  23. I didn't know Braun was 9 games better than a replacement level player. I said "complete scrub" meaning a AAAA hack who puts up 2011 Casey McGehee numbers. Erick Almonte would be prime candidate.
  24. I was about to start the same thread. If Braun ends up missing 50 games, a couple of things happen: 1) You need a LF for 50 games. 2) You shave about $2MM off the payroll and can use that to fill that spot 3) Your playoff chances take a big hit - the dropoff from Braun to a complete scrub could be near 3 wins over 50 games This all puts the team in a weird spot. We have very good pitching, but will probably suck offensively. Do you make trades or signings to try to fix that, or are you convinced that your playoff odds are low enough that you just stand pat, knowing you can make moves in July if things work out. A signing like Aramis Ramirez can help make up for some of the lost offense, but he's likely to come at a hefty price tag. I never liked the idea anyway, but see it as the signing you make when you're close and need to get over the hump. Now that Braun backs the team away from the hump, I don't think paying a hefty price for a free agent looks as attractive.
