  1. I really don't know that this is different from any free agent at a position where we're not stacked. "Yep, if he doesn't get any good offers and will come to us at a bargain price, we want him." I bet we'll also sign Ichiro if he wants to come here for next to nothing to be a 4th OF. You may all gasp in shock.
  2. Hyundais have come a long way: they used to be crap. Another potential problem with really cheap cars is that a good number of people who buy them either get the cheap car because they don't care much, or they had to go cheap because they're just scraping by and will skimp on maintenance. Either way, you run a greater chance of getting a neglected car. Everyone I know who treats their car like crap drives an econo-box or old truck.
  3. If Aoki was so good in Japan, how hard was it to find him? Seriously? I was at a conference over Memorial Day weekend and we had dinner with a couple of colleagues from Japan. One is really into baseball and I told him I'm a Brewers fan. He immediately began grilling me in his limited English as to why the Brewers weren't playing Aoki more. Our entire dinner conversation was him trying to convince me that he should be played every day, as if I were Melvin or Roenicke.
  4. Who would they be undressing with each victory????? They wouldn't. They'd be ripping body parts off of a plaster mold of Chris Carpenter.
  5. When I worked at Papa John's as an undergrad, we once got an application that said "Once I learn something, witch is kwik, you can't mess with my skillz".
  6. In 98 IP over 18 starts this year, he has a 4.01 ERA and a 1.2 WHIP, notches a tick over a K per inning, and doesn't walk many guys. I'd like the guy to go deeper into games, but he's a legit back of the rotation starter.
  7. Gonzalez is the only guy worth his AAV, but he's signed until he's 36. The Dodgers are quickly setting up a gigantic mess. It's like a stupid kid who just received a large inheritance and promptly wastes half of it. I can't believe Boston actually got better than junk prospects to boot. According to mlbtraderumors, the Dodgers have "$193.75MM in contracts for next season, $133.6MM for 2014, $90MM for 2015, $88.65MM for 2015, and another $90MM for 2016."
  8. The Brewers and Phillies are playing a series in mid-August and neither fanbase cares. Who would've predicted that in March?
  9. Yup, this is just weird. You can find .700 OPS OF's pretty easily, and a good number of them are either under 37, cost less than $1.3MM, or have some upside.
  10. I've spent more time watching Big Bang Theory reruns than Brewers games over the past month. I just can't sit through 2.5 hours to watch them wet their pants in the end.
  11. I've been in Iceland for the past few weeks and access to beer will be the only good part of ending my vacation. It's like these guys have no knowledge that you can make anything besides lager.
  12. The only place you could reasonably move Braun is 1B. As he has come along nicely in left, it'd be best to put this idea on the shelf until he's getting old and slow.
  13. I'm late to the party, but I rate the trade(s) an 8.5/solid B. We got a very good package for Greinke, but not a fleecing. We also got a guy with some value for Kottaras, which is better than I'd anticipated. We can't really rate the non-trades since we have no idea what was offered.
  14. Braun's first career homer in SD. Weeks and Fielder getting their first homers in the same game. Cecil Fielder's HR into the County Stadium parking lot. Prince's inside the parker at the Metrodome. Robin Yount Night (when they gave away those sweet hardcover books).
  15. We still have the possibility of a comp pick for Marcum as well. If he's decent when he returns, he's totally worth the $12.5MM offer.
  16. This is bound to set up a showdown in my house as Ichiro is a national hero to my wife which will lead her to the heretical behavior of cheering for the Yankees.
  17. This is much more tempting if Aramis is moved to open up the funds. Green or Gamel could man third in the future and the SS WOAH gets SOLVDD. At his salary, I wouldn't want to give up much, though.
  18. I'd love if either or both could be flipped for a flamed-out SS prospect.
  19. I think a big part of it is that when companies downsized, they often let go the HR people who actually knew what they were doing. This seems to be spot-on. My wife lost her previous job this way. Her company basically slashed everyone who didn't directly bring in profits (i.e., didn't bill for their hours). My wife was one of those who did bring in revenue, but when the decent support staff were gone, there was nobody competent to do the billing or set things up the actual business that they would bill for. Within a few months, they were even less profitable, and multiple entire departments were eliminated, including hers.
  20. If the Marlins didn't get a ton of money coming back, they got totally ripped off. Lee is worth less than zero at his salary, and not that much if he were making $3MM.
  21. Since Izturis was signed to a minor league contract, can't they send him down and pay quite a bit less? I used to know the labor and roster rules well, but it seems my grasp has slipped.
  22. I saw a Remetee for $9 on the clearance rack at TJ Maxx in Ft. Worth. I chuckled.
  23. I'm not sure why we need to hold out for "can't miss prospects". If you're sure you can't extend him, getting the equivalent of Coulter and Haniger would be a great trade. You'd basically get the same talent you could draft, but save $2.85MM in signing bonuses. If they're actually attempting to extend him and think he'll sign for friendly terms, sure, hold out for a big-time return. Otherwise, you shouldn't consider anything beyond the benefits of comp picks vs the offered trade return.
  24. Cable companies always push the 'what if it rains?' angle on satellite TV. What's funny to me is that, with cable, sometimes your picture will lock up or pixelate for no good reason, whether there's cloud cover or not. The signal issues for me with DirecTV were no worse (& quite possibly better) than with cable. It's complete nonsense. I've had Dish Network for 8 of the past 9 years. For one year I lived in an apartment and had to get Comcast cable. That cut out way more often than Dish ever does, and would be down for hours at a time. Sometimes I'd just be down 2 or 3 channels, but they'd be down for almost the entire evening. With Dish, I sometimes lose it in very heavy storms, and sometimes in lighter ones - it seems hard to predict, as I've had crazy storms fail to affect the picture at all. Overall, I have fewer outages with Dish than I did with Comcast or Charter (which I had from 2000-2003). Also, it's cheaper and we can get Japanese channels that no cable company offers in our area.
  25. It'd be awesome if he stays on this tear and convinces someone desperate for catching to give us a quality SS for him.
