  1. We already have Gwynn to fill the speedster/defensive replacement/slap hitter role. The difference is he's cheaper, already on the team, and not recovering from an injury.
  2. Look around at the high school and college kids and see what they are wearing these days. It is mainly Under Armour performance apparel. They have so quickly gained a share in the market and have promoted their brand extremely well in a very short time. Again, a risky pick, but with an extremely high ceiling You have to be extremely careful with a fickle group like this. When I was that age, lots of people wore FUBU and I was a big fan of Ecko clothes. Then you can go back to the early 90's when Starter was the hottest sports apparel company. See how much of those you see on 18-21 year-olds now. I just don't think they have a particularly wide moat, or one that will be enduring.
  3. I totally agree in theory. Big articles should have their own threads so we don't need to search through a long thread - especially when people are still discussing another article and they risk getting garbled. The only problem is defining "big article" and getting posters to follow such guidelines.
  4. He's still a few months from turning 27, and could be a good backup or short-term stop gap for somebody to take a flyer on. When he played everyday he was at least passable, but something has happened since then.
  5. but i just think in the end, if you have racial preferences, there's no way to succeed in professional sports with that attitude. Exactly. When the talent gap between a star and AAAA player is so huge you simply couldn't be racist in your player acquisition and hold a job. It's not like running a fast food place where you could only hire irresponsible dorks from one race and you're pretty much OK because everyone you're gonna get is virtually interchangeable. I guess the very rich franchises could do it, because you'll often have several free agents of similar worth (but widely varying price tags) out there, and you could pay more to be a bigot, but the rest of the teams just want the most production for the lowest salary.
  6. Actually the Wii is dead silent, even the fan in back. Nintendo products simply cannot be destroyed. I ran a couple broken (after nearly 20 years of use) NES systems over with my car and they barely cracked. Their systems simply have no rival in durability.
  7. Some racial issues get really blown out of proportion when it comes to sports. All these people care about is winning and making money. Any industry that will employ a bunch of druggies, rapists, wife beaters, thugs, and jerks isn't going to hold someone back because of skin color. The only color that matters is green. Of course, it's still totally possible that minority players get treated like crap once they're on a team, but that's another issue.
  8. But I am not sure that GMs only look at this year's stats when evaluating players I agree that even the worst GM's are not the pus-brains we view them as. Still, lots of times they're forced to make a move, looking at only the immediate future. Vargas is the kind of guy who fits right into a desperate GM's mold.
  9. They CAN run liquor ads on television. Otherwise, we wouldn't have the annoying "Bacardi and Cola: They Get the Job Done" ads. or commercials for DiSarrono, Captain Morgan, Absolut, etc. I cannot recall if a law was relaxed, or if the industry decided not to self-impose restrictions on TV ads any longer.
  10. All the"rotten guy" stuff aside, I still wouldn't think of it. The Giants will want a huge haul for a guy who's paid quite handsomely and could break down at any point - leaving you with a lemon and negating anything you planned to get out of your huge mid-season trade. If I really wanted to see the team throw out a huge payment, I'd rather get the ever-popular Crawford, though if we're talking about the D-Rays I'd rather get Baldelli after shipping Mench out of town, since the price would be tolerable.
  11. If you use a chemical stripping compound, pull the boat out of the garage if at all possible. Otherwise, leave all doors open and run a fan.
  12. I agree that 2007 is much better because we have solid prospects in the minors as before, but we also have them in the bigs where it actually matters. As much as I loved reading the box scores and dreaming of what could be, it's obviously no match for sitting in the outfield at today's game and seeing Hart go deep twice, Hardy jack one, and Fielder hit an insane inside-the-park homer, or being at Petco to see Braun's first major league jack. We lacked big time success of our farm system at the big league level back in 2004, and while it was fun back then, we've finally escaped the torture of our inept former regime and have our prospects in a successful mix that could finally land us in the post-season.
  13. Texas never seems to admit that they have huge holes and are in rebuilding mode - every year is a contending year. Thus, I think they'll see reality this year and trade Gagne, but won't let go of Otsuka easily because they'll need him to compete next year.
  14. I would assume you could just use a stripping compound. You paint it on, let it sit, and then easily scrape the old stuff off. I've never done this on a boat or other metal surface, though.
  15. Any guy who can reach base three times during a no hitter can't be considered cocky.
  16. Sorry to get in so late, but Branyan is the dreamiest man alive.
  17. I had Dish Network and it was great - zero complaints from me. As for the "your dish goes out in storms" nonsense, it's just a bunch of fear mongering on the part of cable companies. I had Dish for about a year and a half and had a somewhat fuzzy signal maybe twice and only lost signal once during the most intense storms that should have knocked the power out anyway. Meanwhile, my Charter Cable would go out on sunny afternoons with much greater regularity.
  18. Obviously, this won't help you tonight, but as you may know, Fox always replays the previous week's episode on Monday at 7:00 before the new episode starts at 8:00.
  19. His value at this point is pretty low - essentially AAAA with upside.
  20. I had charter when I lived in Eau Claire, and absolutely hated their crap service with constant blackouts, fuzzy picture, bad sound, internet that keeps cutting out, and their atrocious customer service. If they're your only choice, you really only have on rational option: switch to the dish.
  21. I think Joe's exactly right. We have frames associated with stimuli and the manner in which they relate to each other, and they don't match up here. - Horse Pet - Pet Friend - Don't eat friend - Don't eat horse We won't eat anything that we have been conditioned to view as a friend or something with human-like qualities.
  22. Wow, there will be more Mullets, Camaros, Trans-Ams, and felons at that festival than in the entire state of Arkansas.
  23. If he keeps up his progression and doesn't sign an extension, this is a guy who could leave free agency with a "holy crap" kinda contract. He'll turn 29 just before his first year after free agency and seems to be of the mold that doesn't burn out early.
  24. Since I've never been to an event or anything, the visual image I have as I respond to messages is the "bf.net guy" on the header of the site - you can't all look like that, right? I met quite a few members in 2005 and they looked surprisingly normal. Actually, we has a "post a picture of yourself" thread not long ago as well. However, this is a message board, so I'm sure we have members that look like they'd own 12 or more copies of the dungeon master's guide.
  25. Enjoy -- and identify those people you may want to know in 5 years, because you may not get the chance to really see them again. Nobody believes in high school that they'll never see certain people again. They've been there every day, possibly since you were six. However, there are a LOT of people I was friends or casual acquaintances with in high school who I have not seen once since graduation - and this is in Eau Claire, not Milwaukee where it's easy to disappear.
