  1. My girlfriend and I were actually going to go to that series (well, the Saturday and Sunday games). Then I got a job that needed me to start right away in Minnesota, so I won't be here anymore. I'm disappointed that I lived in Texas for nearly 4 years without going to a single game in Houston.
  2. Unless you want to go to Dallas anyway, I'd skip the Texas series. It's only early June, but it's still gonna be hotter than Hades, especially for a notherner who's not acclimated. Plus, the Ballpark is basically Miller Park without a roof - which is still a pretty nice stadium. I'm going to Petco in late May, and am super freakin' pumped about it.
  3. We could do this but you guys just are so negative when it comes to these types of big deals. Trust me, all the positive thoughts in the world wouldn't magically convince the Red Sox to give up Ramirez for a quarter of what he's worth.
  4. Manny PLUS $8M? That means you get him for $10M this year and $12M next season. Good luck getting that kind of return for anything less than Prince and Hall.
  5. How mad would Indian fans be if they gave these away at Miller Park? We're more entitled to them. Milwaukee offered up their stadium to make this cinematic gem possible, and must therefore reap the benefits. I think this whole thing, if glasses are given in Milwaukee, would prove the existence of a baseball deity who made it snow in Cleveland to give this treasure to its rightful owners. That deity, of course, is Jobu, and a Jobu bobblehead would actually be about the greatest giveaway of all time.
  6. BK Kim Why is he called "BK Kim" when his name is Byung-Hyun Kim? I can see the nickname BK, using his initials, but when adding the last name, why isn't he BH Kim? I've never gotten that. As for trading for him, I'd say no thanks. Dude hasn't been good since 2003.
  7. Capellan and his agent are idiots. You never cry publicly about wanting a trade. It destroys the leverage of your GM, so it makes it way harder for him to give you what you want, and it also makes prospective buyers less likely to give anything for you because you're perceived as a malcontent. If these idiots had half a brain, they'd approach Melvin in a very private manner and say "You need to trade him because he's very unhappy and will probably become a distraction. However, he'll be a good boy and put on a happy face until you trade him to make it easier for you to find a buyer."
  8. many of us wanted meyer. he was supposed to be a great pitcher. what ever happened to him? He's been hurt the whole time. As I recall, he hid an injury and made it worse, and didn't pitch much in '06 (with a 5.07 ERA). I'm not sure what his status is this year. Edit: upon searching, it looks like he has recovered from surgery last year and has been optioned to AAA.
  9. Toys R Us has Marvel, Tony Hawk, Rapala, and MOA 3 buy-1 get-1 free. $49.99 for two games is ultra cheap. LINK
  10. Yep, other teams are going to start digging through OUR trash heap for once, which will be a welcomed reversal of fortune.
  11. Yeah, it's really not a problem when you mis-spell the really obscure names like Kieschnick, et al. It's annoying when the guy is either an MLB legend Clemens or Maddux, or you completely get the guy's name wrong like people have mentioned with Richie Weeks, Bob Melvin, Sexton, Greg Gross, etc.
  12. Sherk has no worth once so ever Did you post drunk two weeknights in a row? Impressive.
  13. I actually take great pride in spelling things correctly. Heck, many times, I go grab a dictionary before typing something out (if I need it). I'm glad that all my English, spelling, and grammar classes have "paid off" in my career. Wake up old school. Firefox has built-in spellchecker. It works just like it would in MS word for all of your posts, your email, pretty much anything you type online.
  14. This thread is rEdiculous. Because of that statement, Mike Maddox, Roger Clemmons, Mark Rodgers, and Russell Branyon think your a looser!
  15. Also, it surprised me that A-Rod was with the Foxes or Timber Rattlers (whichever name they had at the time) because didn't he get called up the next year or was it in '96? He actually was called up late the SAME YEAR in 1994. He was up to stay after a 54 game AAA stint in 1995. Dude absolutely shot through the ranks.
  16. In 65 games as a 19 year-old, he hit 14 homers on the way to a .948 OPS.
  17. You almost have to TRY and lose more than 105 games. I'd say they win about 60 - 65. Agreed, though it take a lot to get from 60-80, it doesn't take much talent at all to get those first 60 wins. Other teams get worn down, you face spot starters like the Sheets/Ohka replacements, and without incredibly bad luck, you win no less than 55-60 games. The 32-130 mark is laughable. Seriously, even fringe major league talent simply isn't that weak. This isn't a small sample like the NFL where the same winning percentage is completely feasible. Even the Brewers scrap-heap lineup of CF: Gross RF: Nix LF: Mench 2B: Counsell 1B: Rottino SS: Ozzie Chavez C: Closser 3B: Graffanino With our AAA/AA pitching staff would have to have some bad breaks to finish 32-130.
  18. Bon Jovi is a headliner while B.B. King, Frampton, Asia, and FOREIGNER are side acts? Heck, I'd rather pay to just see "Dirty White Boy" than go to a Bon Jovi concert for free.
  19. I'm completely with Colby. Though you take a great starter or hitter over a great closer, Gagne before the injury was worth more than all but high quality starters and hitters. The difference between Gagne's best season and a guy with a 4.50 ERA over even 81 IP would be about 30 runs allowed. That's the same as a the difference between starters with a 3.00 and 4.50 ERA's throwing 180 IP. You take a guy who could be Gagne 100 times out of 100 over a guy with the same probability of becoming Dave Bush. That said, your chance of getting a Dave Bush is much higher than getting a truly elite closer like Gagne.
  20. but I believe, as do most people in the game, that closers are "made" not born But if he's a 21-22 year-old college pitcher, he was probably already "made" in college. I'm with the idea of drafting a college closer if he falls into the acceptable reaching range (i.e. if he's within a couple spots on an objective depth chart). It all depends on who else is available, though, and at #7, you likely have the chance to take a potential big impact player. Most teams had Braun around or below #7 and Fielder was a #7. Looking at recent drafts, you also have guys like Tulowitski, Maybin, Homer Bailey, Diamond, and Markakis in the 7-10 range. I'll take the upside of those guys over a closer.
  21. I was never hazed when I started here Nor was I, and I barely knew what OPS and WHIP were, while I'd never even heard of VORP, FIP, OPS+, and many other stats. Still, I didn't come out and say "those numbers are all stupid, he's a crappy player and that's it". Instead, when someone argued with me, I'd respond with "tell me how you came to that conclusion", and they may or may not have been right once I looked into it. Sometimes you start out with what you don't think is a position popular with sabre dudes, and find out that it's actually supported. I remember a debate I got into when I came here over a player who had good OBP, but I saw something in him that troubled me - it turns out later that my exact point was that he had "old player skills" and was declining because of it - but I didn't know that was actually a validated phenomenon.
  22. If we get into a situation where he'd see significant playing time, it probably means the season is over. However, it's a great depth move and he'd be better than most "last resorts" as a 25th man in an emergency.
  23. Cordero, IMO, is the kind of dude you pick up near the deadline when you're on the verge and he can push you over the top. The price is just gonna be too high for a player that wouldn't be worth it unless he's pushing you into the postseason. I just don't think we need bullpen help as badly as some other teams at this point, and we therefore won't be willing to outbid them.
  24. I am not a big fan of dumbing down anything. Nor am I. With the constant influx of new posters, you couldn't dumb things down for new users because you ALWAYS have new users, so we'd have to stay at a level of discourse that isn't beyond a couple drunks in a bar. My take on the whole situation is that the majority of idiots here were idiots somewhere else before. These are career trolls who aren't going to suddenly start making sense because the rest of us are civil. I can think of very few posters with a troll-ish start who ended up being productive, and can think of only Reed as a respectable back-from-banishment case. I know if I were in Brian's position I'd never be able to be as patient as he is, because you just know that a new troll WILL be banned eventually, so sometimes it's nice to cut to the chase.
  25. The problem with Nix isn't lack of playing ability as much as lack of ability to stay healthy for 5 straight days.
