  1. Great post Shriv. I agree that sports would be no fun without underdog cult heroes to pull for. From guys who only do one thing well like Rob Deer to guys who don't look like athletes a la Brooks Kiechnick to fat guys who dominate roid freaks like Davis Wells, those oddities are what makes sports interesting. I'd rather cheer for John Jurkovic (one of my all-time favorite Packers) than a slightly-better primma donna any day.
  2. 2. OPS does not consider defense, obviously. Koskie is the superior defender without question. 3. OPS does not consider health. The biggest knock on Branyan, IMO, was not his propensity to strikeout but rather his ainability to stay healthy. A player who is hurt is worth nothing to his team. Those are biggies, IMO. Matt LeCroy can put up a higher OPS behind the plate than most catchers, but does anybody wanna watch Matt Lecroy play catcher regularly? Obviously, OPS isn't the end-all be-all because there are other issues surrounding a player such as those cited above, whether or not he's a Milton Bradley, defensive versatility (i.e. Hall can play more positions than Koskie or Cirillo), age, and contract. Mothershipconnection....what is wrong? I was just curious to see who had a higher career OPS and Brian politely gave me the answer. Well, strictly from a response-cost angle, checking their career OPS would be easier and quicker than posting the question and returning to find the answer. That kinda indicates that you wanted the numbers posted here to prove a point that has already been made and accepted by almost everyone here. We aren't talking about a stat you need to search for or know how to calculate yourself.
  3. Just a question, who has a better career OPS....Koskie or Branyan? 1) Is that really a question, or one you couldn't answer yourself, considering I look at every major league box score every morning....? 2) Is that the issue here? The answer to #2 is obviously "no".
  4. Has June 17th been officially set as the date? I may be back by then, but won't know until late may as I'm up in the air regarding whether or not I will work summer school until June 30 or be returning to WI on June 10. If I do make it, $12-15 would be fine for a shirt, but I agree that it may scare off some people's friends (not an issue with me, I'd come alone).
  5. What about the Alex Sanchez comments on this site...why are they acceptable? Are you serious? Or is this a weak attempt to dart out of a corner? Sanchez is a different animal. He was shaky on the field, rumored to be a cancer in the clubhouse, has a positive drug test on his resume, and was replaced by Scott Podsednik who proceded to finish second in ROY voting. The bottom line is that the unanimous feeling on this site was that Sanchez needed to be traded and that Podsednik was a vastly superior player - nobody was sad to see him go, though some may have been upset that we didn't hold out for more. That Sanchez is in no way a polarizing figure, compounded by the fact that nobody has gone out of their way to rip him makes this completely different than the Branyan case. Yes, If Sanchez finished a season with awful numbers, refused to play, got into a public fight with a teammate/manager, etc there would be a Sanchez thread. I cannot, however, remember a thread started to rip one week's performance or a single mediocre (or great) game. "Well, everyone feels like they can say Glendon Rusch wasn't a great player here, why can't I say Capuano sucks?"
  6. Believe me when I see him go yard, I wince because I know I might hear about it from people on this site. At the same time, when I look at the box score and see him strike out 4 times, I get a chuckle out of it. Actually, nobody has done that yet, not even me, because though I pray to Russell before bed, I'm not an ass and I know one game means nothing. You, however, have started TWO threads. If you don't agree with the "right" people on this site, then you are not respected. No, if you're a stubborn little baby who repeatedly does things that are against the rules and then cries about being a martyr, you won't get any respect. After the first thread was locked, you still started a second, then you started this thread to cry "poor me". In addition to receiving no respect, trolling will get you banned, something I have a feeling you'll eventually find out about.
  7. If you remember Wayne Franklin, you know it definitely exists. Brilliant answer. Yeah, Clancy clubbed us all to death with that stat for an entire off-season. If you want to find those stats, ask him which site (s) they come from.
  8. So a non-K out is around .0185, or .02 runs better than a K out. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but he's saying that 50 extra K's would equal 1 run. Thus, a team would need to convert 500 (50k/run X 10 runs/win) non-k outs into k's to lose 1 additional game, which could never happen.
  9. The only thing on the chart I fail to understand is why batter hit so terribly on 3-0 counts. Because only guys like Chuckie Carr are swinging on 3-0. Disciplined, good hitters are all taking a possible strike with that count.
  10. Something tells me "The Jared Fernandez Experience" will be short-lived. Yes, the sample is still small, but we also have several guys in the minors who have earned a shot.
  11. Seriously, strikeouts vs. other outs is like having someone poop in your food or poop in your food with a fly on it. Yeah, adding the fly makes it even worse, but the difference is almost nothing. You don't care because there's already poop in your food.
  12. How is there anyway to make ONE out that is worse than a strike out? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/news/1999/07/04/brewers_pirates/t1_kendall_ap.jpg
  13. I may be in town again and actually able to hang out at fanfest a little more this time since it's unlikely I'll have people with me that I need to entertain. Last year I pretty much just got in on the food and a couple beers and then we had to go.
  14. Yost, Melvin, and Payne EDIT: I knew the contest was over, but wanted to see if I could even find that out in five minutes. It took a little under 2.
  15. That's pretty cool since sometimes you find an image but it's the size of the entire screen.
  16. Boy, Ohka sure does suck and I'm upset we paid him SO much money last winter.
  17. Prince's struggles in two games mean nothing. Koskie is hitting .667 right now, and I will bet anyone 1 bajillion dollars that he does not keep that up over 400 AB's.
  18. This weekend I watched: Good Night and Good Luck - I thought this was very well-done. Murrow is a personal hero and I, like Robert, would have preferred it didn't focus quite so much on the feud with McCarthy. Memoirs of a Geisha - this was a very interesting story, and the movie told it fairly well. I turned the subtitles on as the accents and soft voices made it hard to understand at times. Waiting - the girls I was with yesterday wanted to watch a comedy, and this is the one we settled for. It was decent, pretty much the comedy that doesn't make your brain work that you'd expect. My distaste for Ryan Reynolds (always playing the smart badass a la Matt Damon) may have clouded my vision a little.
  19. 3TO was an inside joke, people. sheesh People just didn't get it. Some of us happened to like a player who hit lots of homers and also struck out a ton. It's not like we loved 3TO and Branyan just fit so he was worshipped. Rather, we thought Branyan was better-than-advertised and he happened to be the king of an obscure statistic Batman (I believe) came across within an article written by the pres of the Rob Deer fan club. I just don't get the hatred. Seriously, this is a team that sucked, and bad, for over a decade. Accordingly, we had several players who sucked more than even the biggest K hater could say Branyan did.
  20. Russ typed it right. Quoth his study: * SLG increases with decreasing contact rate That's what I'm saying: as one goes down the other goes up. Edit: I see he went back and fixed it. Russ, don't make typos when dealing with graphs and the like, as it makes the rest of us feel like we're taking crazy pills and can't understand the graph. I know you just did it to confuse me.
  21. Gimme a team of Wade Boggs' before you give me a team of Dave Kingmans. To be fair, Boggs did post an .858 career OPS (130 OPS+) compared to Kingman's .780 (115 OPS+). So yeah, Boggs is a no-brainer (dude did smack a few doubles on top of all the walks and singles). But what about Kingman vs. Juan Pierre? There's a .050 OPS difference there in favor of Kingman. Kingman jacked a homer to clear the bases up to 48 times in a season while Pierre has topped out at 3.
  22. Players with a lower contact ratio generally have a lower SLG. Don't you mean "higher SLG"?
  23. he was so intent on not striking out early in the year that his BIP were 5 hoppers to short, two hoppers back to the mound, lazy fly balls to shallow LF, etc. It was great that he only struck out a couple of times in April and May, but being worried about it took all of the aggressiveness out of his swing. Yet another wrinkle, which I hadn't really thought about until now. What if a player lowers his K numbers by playing to conservatively, thus also dropping his power numbers and lowering his OPS by .025? Russell Branyan could cut his K number by 75% if he wanted to. He'd hack away at the first pitch, then bunt the next two. He'd also likely have an OBP of .100 and an SLG of .150. But hey, dude would never strike out. Once Hardy started to K a little more, he also began pounding the snot out of the ball.
  24. The only real situation I'd "not mind" a K is an at bat with like 10 or more pitches. That's why there are simply too many wrinkles here for anyone to categorically label one type of out as worse than another. If one guy fouls off a bunch of pitches and K's on the tenth pitch, while another guy grounds out on the first pitch, the K is a better out there, as it drives the pitch count up. There is no "good out" (as in "as good as a hit"), and there's no "worst possible kind of out".
  25. It's their opinion and it should be respected. You can dissagree with their opinion but don't insult them. Absolutely. If it's stated as opinion, nobody should get flamed. Sometimes, however, some cocky newbie will let us know that "it's a fact that Bill Hall is a better SS than JJ Hardy and K's are WAY worse than all other outs". That is when opinions become troublesome here.
