  1. I guess the thing to decide is if we want to go with Milwaukee, Madison, or somewhere in between. I can probably get us a private room for no cost at a cool pub in Fort, but I realize that might be too out of the way for some. Hawing is right that Johnson Creek would be a good location, but I can't think of much in that town. Hiway Harry's is probably a bit too ritzy.
  2. This year my band, Wayne & The Annihilators will be playing at Capn's Steakhouse & Saloon in Fort Atkinson. Any are welcome to attend if you're looking for something to do.
  3. Hey everyone. I just wanted to put out feelers about having a "Winter Meeting" this coming year. I am more than happy to spearhead this event again this year, if the powers that be are open to it. If plans are already in the works, I haven't heard yet. Last year we had it at the Great Dane in Fitchburg, and had a decent turn out. I would like to see us have an event again this year, so am willing to do what I can to make things happen. I'd like to start this conversation now, so we don't have to have things happen last minute like last they did this past year. Please chime into this thread and say if you'd be interested in attending this year, and give any other thoughts you might have. No location or time has been determined yet, but it's traditionally happened in March (before the season starts, of course).
  4. But if the team keeps losing players like Sabathia and Prince Fielder to free agency, how much longer can the success last? It can be frustrating as a fan, but who really honestly expected Milwaukee to keep either of those two long term anyway? Sabathia was just a rental (despite the offer that had no chance of being accepted) and we've been saying "Fielder will be leaving at free agency" since about 2006. I'm more than happy that Braun, Weeks, Gallardo, and Hart have all been extended. Who could have envisioned such a scenario just five years ago?
  5. Yeah, I saw that too. Not really anything new, but he's certainly sticking to his story (as expected).
  6. My brother-in-law gave me Dragon Age 2 for Christmas. Enjoying it so far, even though I haven't been able to get too deep into the game yet. Seems a bit better than the first game (which I also enjoyed).
  7. I agree, it's weird we haven't even heard a date yet.
  8. I don't think the Brewers' popularity is just a bandwagon thing anymore. Sure, if the team becomes terrible again, some interest will wane and attendance will take somewhat of a dip. However, I run into people that I wouldn't suspect are baseball fans at all, and they'll bring up stuff about the Brewers. They also get a lot more coverage on local TV and radio than they used to. I think Mark Attanasio has turned the Brewers into a brand that is beyond just the bandwagon effect. It's become "cool" to go to Miller Park and tailgate and to wear the hats and gear (both modern and retro)...I think you'll see that continue even when the team isn't a playoff contender.
  9. I don't think the Brewers necessarily need or should extend BOTH of Marcum and Greinke. I would probably prefer seeing Greinke extended, as he is younger and has better stuff overall than Marcum. Hopefully by next season, one of the younger guys like Peralta or Fiers will be an established option for the rotation.
  10. To expand on what Houlie said, I would say the Brewers were still very popular in the late '80s and early '90s. 1992 was a very successful year in which the team barely missed the playoffs. However, allowing Paul Molitor to leave after that season, and Robin Yount's retirement after the '93 season signaled an end of the team's "glory days." The team declined in popularity starting in the mid '90s. At the time, Bud Selig's quest for a new stadium was not very popular with many residents in Wisconsin.
  11. I clearly remember talk of them trying to work out a deal before the '08 season. Prince then had some quote along the lines of "My time will come," or something. I'm mobile right now so its hard to search for a link, but perhaps another poster can provide one. Edit: This thread has reference to a report from Tom Haudricourt that the Brewers offered him a contract in the $60 million range (which jives with what I remember). Unfortunately, the link to the report no longer works. There is another thread from Spring Training '08 that mentions comments from Jim Powell along the same lines. So I would say it's safe to say that yes, the Brewers did approach Prince about a long term deal after his second year. Prince and Boras had no interest in a long term deal, though.
  12. They tried to offer Prince Fielder a contract at the time that would have bought out just his first year of free agency (if I recall correctly). Prince and Boras balked, so the Brewers re-signed Prince on their scale. Not really something you can fault Melvin for, in my opinion.
  13. @BrewerNation has a blog article up about Greinke being interested in an extension with the Brewers. Sounds like it's only talk at this point, but intriguing none the less. This player wants to be compensated well but wants to leave the Brewers with room to maneuver in their budget. This, of course, would be in an effort to help the Brewers stay competitive. I don’t know what point, if anywhere, the talks have progressed to further than just the initial notification of the desire to indeed talk. Many people guessed the player’s name correctly but I will say to you now that it is referring to Zack Greinke. Greinke is said to really like it in Milwaukee and would like to stay here for a period of time but, again, wants to get paid too.
  14. If he is already coming to work out, I would guess he's open to signing.
  15. What? I really disagree with your post. They replaced Yuni with Alex Gonzalez, not Izturis. And Counsell was clearly washed up last season. At least Izturis can still play good defense and is about ten years younger than Counsell.
  16. Guys, he's not on the team any longer. He can't hurt us anymore. The only way he comes back to curse us is if the Brewers and Royals somehow meet in the World Series and he manages to put up an .850 OPS in the playoffs again.
  17. Provus will be tough to replace. I really enjoyed his work with the Brewers. Uecker in particular is very effusive about Block in that article, so hopefully this is just a continuation of the Brewers bringing in quality radio voices.
  18. MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers and NewsRadio 620 WTMJ today announced that Joe Block has been named as play-by-play announcer on the Brewers Radio Network. Block will join Hall of Fame lead announcer Bob Uecker in the booth, replacing Cory Provus who joined the Minnesota Twins broadcast team last month. Block, 33, comes to the Brewers with more than 10 years of broadcasting experience. He has called the action for more than 900 professional baseball games, including the Jacksonville Suns (2003-2006), Great Falls White Sox (2007) and Billings Mustangs (2010), among others. He also handled play-by-play for select games during the Expos final two seasons in Montreal (2003-04). “We had a tremendous number of qualified candidates interested in this position, and the process for finding the right person for this role was very comprehensive,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “Joe is someone who brought a unique skill set and background to the table. His play-by-play work is terrific, he has a quick wit and as a Midwestern native he has a genuine love for the area. We think the fans will enjoy his work alongside Bob very much.”
  19. As someone who hasn't really watched him recently, is Izturis still considered pretty good defensively? I know he offers nothing on offense at this point.
  20. Jon Morosi reports.
  21. That's what I thought, but I couldn't remember for sure. I don't watch a lot of television "news", because most of it is terrible and doesn't tell me anything I can't read earlier on Twitter or web sites.
