  1. The money paid to Prince is most certainly not coming out of Ilitch's check book.
  2. I'm guessing Prince's many millions of dollars will assuage any hard feelings he gets from dealing with a tougher local media.
  3. A bit surreal to see him in another uniform, but good for him. Looks like he kept himself in real good shape over the winter.
  4. I'm sure the Brewers have kicked the tires on him, but I doubt there have been any real negotiations or anything. I don't think we can beat out the Rangers, etc. if they have interest.
  5. Decision on Braun not expected "for a couple of weeks."
  6. Hopefully this isn't an indication that he will be suspended after all. I'm assuming they just wanted to avoid turning this event into even more of a circus.
  7. Well, I know I've seen some Lakefront and Sprechers in the past for sale. There are also a couple carts that sell a selection of import beer (Heinkeken, Corona, etc).
  8. Player of the Year: Ryan Braun - I don't really see anyone else coming close to the numbers he'll put up, quite honestly, suspension or not. Pitcher of the Year: Yovani Gallardo - He'll contend for the NL Cy Young Award. Rookie of the Year: Norichika Aoki - He'll get enough playing time to make a good impression this season. Most Improved Player: Kameron Loe - I don't know why. I just think he'll have a very nice year out of the pen now that Roenicke hopefully knows how to use him correctly. Questions Answered: 1) Who will get the first contract extension? Zack Greinke - I don't see anyone else who is an obvious candidate. I don't think they'll end up really trying to extend Marcum. 2) Who will be the first traded away or released (off the expected 25 man roster)? Taylor Green - I think he gets traded to fill another position of need. Not really hoping I'm right on this one, just a hunch. 3) What position in the NL Central will the Brewers finish? 1st place Record: 90-72
  9. Unless the Brewers were able to get him on a 4 or maybe 5 year deal they were winners by not signing him. It is smart baseball. Are the Twins winners because they signed Mauer to a ridiculous contract? When Pujols didnt sign with the Cardinals people didnt just immediately write them off but that is what some are doing with the Brewers and it makes no sense. This is a great point, and reminds me of a quote from Melvin from earlier this winter. It was something along the lines of, "The teams who win in the winter hot stove often don't wind up winning anything." Being the team to give out the biggest contract or sign the most top free agents isn't always a recipe for success. I don't think you can compare this signing to Carlos Lee's deal with the Astros, though. While Lee was a great hitter during his time with the Brewers, I don't think he was quite an elite hitter like Prince has been. Lee was also four years older than Prince when he signed with the Astros. Plus I would say the Tigers have a much better front office and ownership than the Astros have had, so that lessens the chance of them becoming as terrible as Houston has been.
  10. We says stuff like this a lot, but I'm guessing if Prince helps Detroit get a championship (or two) within that time, they won't care all that much. They also will probably have him as the full time DH by then, which minimizes their risk somewhat.
  11. I saw one video of some Brewers "fan" burning a Prince Fielder jersey (linked to it on Twitter). Anyone that bent up over this is someone I can't relate to. Like others have said, we've seen this coming for years now. I pretty much resigned myself to that fact a couple years ago when the Brewers couldn't get a long term deal done with him during spring training. The Brewers don't have any business playing in the realm of $200 million+ contracts, and I think reasonable fans know that. For me, some of the sting is lessened by the fact that the Brewers didn't bother to make some token offer during the off-season. I didn't want to see a repeat of the CC Sabathia "negotiations", and I'm glad Melvin and Attanasio didn't fall for it. After the NLCS, reality set in that Prince had played his final game as a Brewer, and I was OK with that. I think yesterday was somewhat a bittersweet day. I'm glad he went to the Tigers and not a team like the Yankees or Red Sox, or worse yet a rival team in the NL. The reality is that I think we all figured we could only keep one of Fielder or Braun long term. I feel much better having Braun around for the next eight seasons (regardless of any suspension).
  12. Unforutnately, you could make the same argument about the Brewers; and I for one would have been furious if the Seligs had tried to change our team's name when we moved to the NL. I get what you mean, but at least the Brewers have the connection to the old Milwaukee Brewers clubs. The Astros' name came up as sort of a new marketing gimmick at the time anyway.
  13. The Houston Exceptionalism.
  14. Supposedly Prince and Cecil have at least somewhat patched things up.
  15. Back to back first round picks sounds pretty good to me. Adam McCalvy notes the same thing.
  16. I can at least kind of, sort of, cheer for him as Tiger.
  17. Heyman now reporting Prince to Detroit as well.
  18. Now Tim Brown from Yahoo Sports is saying Prince is close to a NINE year deal with the Detroit Tigers. We'll see...
  19. Big "news" is that someone using a fake Jon Heyman twitter account was spreading a rumor that Prince had signed an 8 year deal with Washington. Boring news day, I guess.
  20. You'll never see a major professional sports team in the United States with a gun/weapon related name again; it's just seen as being too un-PC. I think the Astros name is fine, but I could see how the franchise might want to "re-brand" with moving to the AL. Let's face it, the Astros aren't really all the prestigious in terms of their history anyway.
  21. I only caught some of the show, but I have to admit I was hoping Laurinaitis would somehow hit Punk with a surprise Ace Crusher.
  22. Yep, they do have Sprecher beer for sale in a couple areas of Miller Park. Contrary to popular belief, there is a decent amount of non Miller-Coors beer available at Miller Park if you look for it.
  23. I agree with patrickgpe. If anything, Braun being found "innocent" would allow MLB to reiterate that their entire process, including the appeals, is unbiased and works.
  24. I've been busy with work today and haven't had a chance to chime in on this. I will say that I've been optimistic that Braun will somehow be exonerated in this. Call it naive fanboy optimism, but this whole thing has sounded very bizarre from the start. I have felt for quite a while that somehow Braun will get off on a technicality of some sort, whether a mishandled test or something else. What I don't understand from the Patrick info is this: If it isn't a masking agent, or a PED, or something taken for a medical reason, what could it possibly be? I agree with dhoffman19 that we may never get the full story on this. If earlier rumors were true (though that doesn't jive with Dan Patrick's tidbits), this whole thing might just get swept under the rug by MLB and everyone else involved.
  25. Well, the NBA referees are even more embarrassing, but that's nothing new.
