  1. I'll be the first to ask the really important question: What will Chris Carpenter tell his son???
  2. Arte Moreno really doesn't screw around. Supposedly Pujols gets a full no trade clause along with that quarter billion dollars.
  3. Jon Heyman claims that the Brewers aren't done pursuing Fielder. I don't really buy it, personally.
  4. I guess Melvin has new comments in the JS this morning saying Saito is basically gone. Edit: Here it is: "We still like our ball club. We won last year because a lot of our strength was our starting pitching and bullpen. We've still got all five starters back and now we've got K-Rod, Axford, Loe and Estrada. We're losing Hawkins and Saito."
  5. Agreed. Hawkins was very good last season, but let's not forget he missed almost all of 2010 with an injury. I don't consider this a big loss. Melvin has shown an ability to fill the bullpen consistently.
  6. This makes things very interesting.
  7. I would think the Brewers could trade him for just about anything before they cut him. I was just going to say, I think people are freaking out a bit over nothing. K-Rod on a one year deal should still have pretty good value. They could trade him (possibly eating maybe a third of his salary) and still get a good prospect or something in return. Not the ideal situation, but I don't think it wrecks the off-season if he accepts, like some have been predicting.
  8. The McGehee talk could just be to build him up for a potential trade, though. It's not like he can come out and say, "Yeah, Casey was pretty bad last year. We can't have him as a starter going into 2012, and that."
  9. You may be right, but then again, the Brewers may have decided they have too many key roles to fill to wait for Boras to "shop around" for some offer they won't be able to beat anyway.
  10. Buster Olney reporting that the Brewers are giving up on re-signing Prince Fielder and "moving on."
  11. Haudricourt with a bit of an update on Fielder: You hear rumors about Seattle, Toronto and Baltimore being interested in Fielder but insiders say no. I think Cubs are team to keep eye on. Sounds like the market for Prince is still rather cold.
  12. Usually reliable Twitter source "Incarcerated Bob"saying that the Marlins are going to offer Pujols a contract in the $210-225 million range.
  13. Figured this was noteworthy enough for its own thread. From Tim Dierkes via MLB Trade Rumors: [/i] Longtime Cubs third baseman Ron Santo was elected to the Hall of Fame today, announced the Baseball Writers Association of America. Santo was elected by the Golden Era Committee, a newly-formed part of the Veterans Committee, which exists for players not elected during their initial 15 years of eligibility. Unfortunately Santo was not around to witness his election, having passed away a year ago due to complications from diabetes. His induction will take place July 22nd in Cooperstown.[/i]Santo hit .277/.362/.464 with 342 home runs in his 15-year career, mostly for the Cubs. He was known as as a strong defender. In a sabermetric sense, Santo tallied 79.3 wins above replacement according to FanGraphs. Santo later served as the Cubs' radio color commentator.
  14. That's how I feel. Ramirez may have privately scoffed at changing positions, but at the end of the day, he'll play 3B if the Marlins tell him to.
  15. I never figured the Brewers were realistic contenders to sign him, so not too worried about this. Betancourt doesn't need to be our next option, though.
  16. I have to believe there's quite a bit more to it than that. Maybe someone more knowledgeable about how baseball scouting works can chime in.
  17. If it's a three year deal, I hope the price per year is discounted a decent amount. Don't need to be paying him $10 million+ a season for three years.
  18. Uh-oh...SEC targets Marlin's shady business.
  19. An ESPN Chicago tweet suggests the Brewers may have made an offer to Ramirez.
  20. Haudricourt just tweeted that Melvin told him he in fact won't be making a bid on Nakajima, so there goes that idea.
  21. I've wondered for a long time why the Mariners or Royals didn't move Betancourt to second base. I think he would have a much easier time there.
  22. Adam McCalvy had reported earlier this week that they "probably wouldn't", but perhaps that changed in the last couple days? Maybe they just aren't seeing any realistic signings among Reyes, Furcal, Rollins, etc. I guess we'll see today. It's interesting to at least hear the Brewers connected with an international free agent.
  23. I still say Dave Parker should be in, given some of the recent inductees (Dawson, Rice, etc). Doesn't seem like it will ever happen, though.
  24. Adam McCalvy was on 1250 this morning, talking about the shortstop situation. He felt that Yuniesky Betancourt might be the Brewers' most realistic option, but that another team could very well sign him if the Brewers wait around too long. Here's to hoping that some other team does sign him so Melvin has to look elsewhere.
  25. Bagwell and Larkin would be the only two I would vote for. I think most of the others mentioned belong in the "Hall of Very Good" category (ie. they can be on their respective team's Walk of Fame or whatever).
