  1. Since someone is bound to ask: How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his son?
  2. You never know. David Ortiz has had some big endorsement deals, and I don't think he's regarded as a great orator or anything. Prince did have that video game deal a couple years ago. A lot of the lack of endorsements is just the fact that Prince plays in a small market right now.
  3. Someone asked him about it after the game on Saturday and all he said was, "We won the game."
  4. I'm just very doubtful anything happens at this point. Just no real chatter about this going on right now. Then again, crazier things have happened I guess.
  5. It's hard to say. I think he was probably just messing with people. Maybe he won a poker game with the guys and was rubbing it in. Who knows?
  6. The difference this year is that we should have some late season help with the returns of Weeks and Gomez. I am going to be very optimistic and think we can clinch during the Reds series that goes Sept. 16-18. That would give the Crew about a good week and a half of playing relatively meaningless games.
  7. Someone has to know something. I'm not sure you can jump to the conclusion that a deal is done or imminent, though. The timing would be rather weird right now. Maybe Prince was just having some fun or something.
  8. With the way Wolf is pitching this year, I don't think you can necessarily predict a sudden decline next season. I don't think he'll be as good as this year, but I still think he can be a very serviceable #4 type next year. It does sound like Jungmann will be on a fast track to the majors, though.
  9. Reminds me of that one King of the Hill where they're waiting for a tornado to hit, and the local channel is calling it "Killstorm '97!" or something like that.
  10. Fielder has only played in 12 more games than Braun this year, so I'm not sure this is a big deal.
  11. I was listening to Kim Komando for a bit this morning (syndicated radio technology show), and she made it sound like this was more or less a done deal.
  12. To get comp picks for him if he leaves after the season. He will probably be a Type A free agent.
  13. This is why I rarely watch the news on television anymore. It's just designed to get people riled up and emotional, rather than actually inform viewers.
  14. So the Brewers don't have anyone that speaks Spanish that could ask him how to pronounce his name? Every time Yuni comes to the plate the announcer says his name. I know Rob Edwards speaks English, but he still says "Bet-An-CourT". Wouldn't Yuni hear his name being said wrong and tell someone at some point? My guess is that Betancourt really hasn't been bothered by it. He's been in the league six years, so you can't really blame the Brewers for the mistake.
  15. Huh? Is this yet another obscure stat I've never heard of?
  16. Weird. Up until seeing that picture above, I had thought Fiers was black for some reason.
  17. There's no way the Cards would have let Berkman go to the Brewers this season. None. They are still technically in the pennant race, and it's not like they are cash strapped and need to shed salary. What kind of message would it have sent to their fan base? They certainly wouldn't want to give up the comp picks they'll get if he declines arby and leaves in free agency. This idea is just a pipe dream that wouldn't happen, so no need to seethe at Melvin over it.
  18. I just got the new Blackberry Torch yesterday. As good as an iPhone? Probably not. But the competition is catching up to Apple pretty quick. Have to give Jobs and company credit for moving the smartphone market so significantly, though. I just have never cared for some of Apple's more draconian policies.
  19. He won't start tonight. Haudricourt (I think) mentioned that McGehee has pretty good numbers against Dempster.
  20. Good point. Berkman would still be owed about $1.3 million this year, if my math isn't off. Not exactly peanuts for a small market club.
  21. I just can't see the Marlins springing for Prince, even with the new stadium opening next year. It doesn't seem like Loria's modus operandi. They have some current players they are going to be faced with re-signing in the near future as well.
  22. There's no point in putting in a claim that isn't going to work out, I'd guess. Melvin might even call their GM before bothering.
  23. I do think a team's ability to win and remain competitive will be a factor for Prince. Someone was on the D-List last week saying he had spoken to Fielder and he said as much. I really doubt he signs with a team like Baltimore just because they offer him a couple million more. If they offer him $20 million more than the next closest team, then maybe I can see it. I do think he really wants a World Series ring (or two or three...). One thing that drives him is that he wants to have a better career than his father.
  24. They probably didn't focus on Braun much since he isn't technically really Jewish.
  25. I really don't want to see the Brewers offer Fielder more than five years, or maybe five with a vesting option for a sixth. Giving a big seven year deal to a first baseman would be a terrible move for a team that does have a payroll ceiling like the Brewers. It could be a franchise crippling contract. I still think Fielder will end up going to a team that can contend that will offer him a bigger deal, like maybe the Angels.
