  1. I don't blame Macha for using him today. Coffey got lit up yesterday and all the others have been used a lot lately. Hoffman is on the roster to be the closer. If he can't close, he basically has no value to the team. It's just a horrible situation for the team to be in right now.
  2. Well, that's quite depressing to look at. Can anyone say they wouldn't rather have Suppan closing than Hoffman at this point?
  3. I think I like this option the best. Maybe they could even slide McGehee over to 1B to try him out there and use Prince as a DH. Might send a message to the big man.
  4. The problem is he'll blow at least four more saves to get to 600. I don't think they can be that patient with him anymore.
  5. You are right, but I think it's understandable that some are frustrated at this point. You really have to wait at least a full season to assess a pitching coach, I'd think.
  6. Would it be reasonable to place him on waivers and see if anyone would claim him? Edit: Here's a gem from Tom Haudricourt...in 14 appearances, Hoffman is 1-3, 13.15 ERA, with five blown saves in 10 opportunities. Is he the worst closer in the majors at this point, by far?
  7. Maybe because all the pitchers are pitching the same or worse than last season? I'm not saying they should fire Peterson, personally. But it would be nice to see some sort of return after the Brewers gave him a decent contract and he talked up all his bio-mechanics knowledge and such.
  8. That's my assessment. They (meaning Melvin and Attanasio in particular) need to talk to Trevor and get an honest assesment. If he's hurt, he needs to go to the DL. If he's toast, he should do the honorable thing and hang it up. Otherwise he gets relegated to being a garbage time reliever. They can't possibly throw him in with a close lead at this point. You just can't realistically count on him. It might be time to call up Braddock and see if he can be the closer of the future.
  9. No he doesn't. He has trouble finding closers that work out for more than one or one-and-a-half seasons.
  10. Not sure why people are down on this. Is Estrada a spectacular high upside guy? No. But he has been decent in AAA so far this season. He could be at least adequate in the short term if given a chance.
  11. And just as I say that, I get a tweet from Haudricourt saying that they've indeed called up Marco Estrada. No corresponding roster move announced yet.
  12. I agree making a GM change just to "make a change" would be terrible. As far as future options, Kevin Towers is a guy floating out there right now that had a pretty nice run as the Padres GM.
  13. Loe actually just pitched yesterday, whereas Estrada pitched on the 14th. So if they are looking at a starter from a rotation spot standpoint, Estrada is probably the better fit at least in the near term.
  14. If you trade Hart, who plays RF? I don't want to see Gerut as the everyday RF, and Edmonds seems to be hurt.
  15. The thing is that Fielder would put the Rays over the top and probably lock up the tough AL East for them. Sure they're in first place, but the Yankees are nipping right at their heels. He would also be a tremendous help to them in the post-season. If salary is really that big an issue, the Brewers could take a player back who is already making some money this season (Upton?), though that should call for an additional or higher quality prospect coming back in return.
  16. It's really hard to gauge Dean Taylor's stint since he was so handcuffed by Wendy's limited payroll and general incompetence. He did make some nice moves like you noted. I don't think you can really blame him for the Hammonds signing either, since the team was trying to make a "splash" with Miller Park opening up.
  17. If they do decide to go with a starter, Kameron Loe might be a possibility.
  18. Braddock would make a lot of sense. He could slot in as the setup man with Hawkins on the DL and Coffey faltering, and then take over as closer next season.
  19. I think one of the biggest problems with Bando is that he would trade for OK-ish MLB guys to try and keep up the illusion that the team was still competing, when it was clear they should have been rebuilding. Especially after 1992 when not only Molitor left, but also other key guys like Bosio.
  20. The point is that you can keep Suppan around at least for a while and have him eat up the garbage time innings. Also since the money is already spent on Suppan, you would actually be spending more money calling up a guy to the majors, since you'd have to give them a raise to the MLB minimum salary (unless it's someone already under contract). Granted that is not a huge additional cost in the long run, but I'm saying there isn't any big rush to get guys up here at this point.
  21. I think the last few games have shown that we need Gomez in CF. Gerut and Edmonds just aren't that good playing that position. Also the right side of the infield has been pretty bad, worse than last year. McGehee isn't great, but I haven't seen him blowing plays like Fielder and Weeks have.
  22. Not sure why everyone is calling for Suppan to be released again. It's like it's supposed to be the new magic cure all for this team's losing streak. He has the second best ERA as a reliever on the team right now, if I'm not mistaken. Vargas I would be fine with, as he's been pretty useless this season.
  23. Did he mention this last night? I didn't see anything about it so far. I'm not sure if Estrada would make sense. I would think a reliever would be more likely at this point.
  24. I won an item on eBay I'd been looking for for a while. Nothing really rare or exotic, but I got it at a very good price. Got the package yesterday, opened it up...and it's a completely different item. Correct invoice was in the box, but a completely different product. I emailed the seller immediately, and he emailed me today, saying that sure enough, the two items got switched. So, hopefully he will make right on it quickly. I'm guessing he will as he has a high feedback rating, but it's just sort of an annoyance.
  25. I'll never forgive Bando for low balling Paul Molitor after the 1992 season and basically driving him out of Milwaukee to Toronto. I know Selig probably played a hand in it, but that was just disgraceful.
