  1. There's a posting on the JSOnline blog that goes more in depth with this.
  2. Sounds like Mulder could be a ways off from actually pitching yet, based on latest reports. Supposedly he's not even throwing off a mound yet. Doesn't really sound like a promising outlook at this point.
  3. They've won four division titles with Beane at the helm, at least.
  4. From Haudricourt, re: Sheets: "Doug Melvin told me he'll have a scout at the throwing session of Ben Sheets, but it sounded more like due diligence than anything."
  5. Yep, he's truly a special hitter, and my favorite player currently. We're pretty darn lucky to have him around.
  6. Maybe this ties into the recent pressure the Marlins have been getting from both MLB and the MLBPA to spend more money. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4819982
  7. This is another lazy signing by BtA and Co, and represents another overpay. Couldn't a trade have been explored with northsidebaseball or cardsclubhouse.com? This season, battlekow's VORP and WOBA numbers are projected to decline. This franchise is going down the tubes fast, and it's time for ownership to evaluate where this once promising organization is heading.
  8. McGehee earned the starting job at 3B. Barring a terrible spring training from him, he'll be the starting 3B, like it or not. I would not be surprised to see Gamel start the year in Nashville.
  9. Mulder will probably cost less, and seems like a lock to sign a minor league contract with the Brewers, based on reports. I wouldn't mind looking at Bedard, but fear his asking price may be too high.
  10. Yeah, if anything it would be nice to shut up the Red Sox and Yankees fans that all assume they'll sign him once he hits FA.
  11. It's funny to see teams like the Cubs and Yankees tightening up the purse strings. Even they don't want tons of bad money sitting on their books any more. They are probably being smart, since next year's FA class is supposedly much better than this off-season's. I'm sure the Cubs' new ownership has a lot to do with it, too.
  12. I think they'll get it done. They want to make sure they keep filling that new ball park, and a Mauer/Morneau combo certainly can do that.
  13. That said, giving Jeff Suppan $42 million is a realistic approach? Or even giving Randy Wolf $31 million? We did overpay for Suppan, but you have to remember the circumstances at the time. Melvin wanted someone who would reliably take the ball every fifth day. Maybe if Sheets hadn't gotten hurt two years in a row, he wouldn't have done the signing at the time. And I think the Wolf contract is fine. A slight overpay, but not one that is going to cripple the team even if he is mediocre (his numbers don't point to him outright crashing and burning as an SP). I would not be surprised if the Brewers have "a representative" at Sheets' session either.
  14. The problem with that, is who knows if Sheets will actually be able to pitch anytime soon? Supposedly he is going to throw for teams at the end of this month, so we'll see what happens. I'm not convinced Smoltz is some huge upgrade over Davis, etc. at this point, either. A nice tidbit I just saw on the JSOnline blog: "If Davis is signed, you're replacing this: Looper 194 IP 5.22 ERA Suppan 161 IP 5.29 ERA With This: Wolf 214 IP 3.23 ERA Davis 203 IP 4.12 ERA" I don't think that's an insignificant improvement.
  15. It could be a negotiating ploy, but it's making Sheets and his agent sound delusional.
  16. That is all well and fine, but this is not a realistic approach for a team with a limited budget like the Brewers.
  17. It's funny how many people were screaming in 2008 for the Brewers to sign Sheets to a 4 year/$60 million deal, or "whatever it takes to keep him." Melvin made the right move.
  18. I'd have to think streaming via the Wii would not be that great. 480p resolution and Dolby Pro Logic sound at best? No thanks.
  19. The early reactions I've read from Royals fans on this move seem pretty positive. I think Yost is more respected around baseball than he was in Milwaukee.
  20. Just saw this from Adam McCalvy via Twitter. Apparently the Royals just announced this in a press release. Press release
  21. And he tried to do something about it in general, but the players union stood in the way, as usual.
  22. Well, that is the contradiction. If he only used them to recover from injuries, why did he feel the need to apologize to Roger Maris' family? And yeah, as far as Canseco, he gets a lot of credit for helping to kick start MLB's "clean up" of this mess, and deservedly so.
  23. I remember hearing this argument in regards to the Milwaukee Braves. They had some really young pitchers that they used up in a couple years by having them pitch like crazy. While I think any athlete has to be tough, I think it's been shown that "babying" young pitchers is more likely to give a franchise a better return on their investment than rushing them to the majors. This is especially true with a smaller market team like the Brewers.
  24. Yeah, I think people just have bad memories of Davis' time as a Brewer for some reason (maybe because we traded him for Johnny "The Human Slug" Estrada?). He may work slow, but he's usually pretty effective.
  25. It's been reported since then that the Cubs are turned off by his agent's ridiculous salary demands (supposedly he wants something like two years and $10-12 million per year), so there may not be much to it at all.
