  1. If they can get Washburn on a one year deal, that would not be a bad deal at all. I would think they'd have to overpay to get him on only one year, though.
  2. They still have to be strong contenders to win their division. They don't have to be better than the Yankees and Red Sox. They have to be better than the Angels and Rangers (and the A's, but they look like non-factors right now).
  3. Ken Rosenthal has a new piece up where he mentions he feels the Brewers will sign one of Davis, Washburn, or Garland before spring training stars. Haudricourt has more on it in his blog. I wouldn't be shocked to see Washburn with the Brewers. I think he'd be an OK option as long as it's not more than a two year deal.
  4. Greinke seems to like it there (or at least claims to). If they can keep their small nucleus of quality young talent, they could be competitive soon enough. Of course people have been saying that down there for the past ten years, as the article basically illustrates.
  5. One minor problem I've been having: Internet Explorer 8.0 seems to freeze up and crash somewhat frequently on my Windows 7 desktop. Usually I'm able to recover whatever page I was looking at, so it's not a huge deal. I'm not sure what is causing the issue. I suppose I could install Firefox or something, but I am worried about further compatability issues. Anyone tried Firefox or Chrome on 7 yet?
  6. Paul Molitor was basically voted in for being a DH, so I don't see why Martinez should be excluded on that grounds. I'm not sure if his numbers really stand up, though. I have to say no on Dawson, just because I don't think you can fairly give guys a pass because they had injuries that caught up to them.
  7. My picks: Alomar Blyleven Larkin Parker Smith I'm kind of borderline on Alan Trammell and could go either way on him. Also, I don't know why Parker is so over looked. I think if Jim Rice can get in, Dave Parker should as well.
  8. I wouldn't hold your breath. The Brewers never get mentioned in connection to high profile international free agents like this. As much as I would possibly like to see something like this happen, it's probably too much of an uphill battle for Doug Melvin to even bother with.
  9. Speaking of Doug Davis, isn't it kind of weird that his name hasn't really been mentioned at all in terms of any teams pursuing him? I wonder if he's just asking for too much money right now.
  10. I'd do that for Davis, no problem. It would give us a serviceable arm for the next couple years, and hopefully bridge the gap to bringing one of these "promising, young arms" from the minors to Milwaukee.
  11. I don't think this signing is that bad. We have to remember the Mets are a big market team that can afford contracts like this. They might be overpaying a bit on an annual basis, but so what? I doubt Bay is going to have his production just drop off a cliff, but if he does, they can just eat the contract.
  12. I'd say go ahead and enjoy them. Open them up if you think you won't bother to sell them anyway. A lot of the collectible sports collectibles market has crashed down quite a bit in the last few years.
  13. I think this partly signals that the market is not that big for position players this winter. Maybe Holliday and Bay should take note.
  14. I actually got a surprising collection of Brewers memorabilia from my parents. They got several items from a charity auction, including some early '80s newspapers covering the '82 World Series appearance, several magazines from the early '80s (including an '82 WS program), several of the McDonalds and Pizza Hut placemats from the same era, and then this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2664/4218145461_44de2505ab_o.jpg Pretty neat score book from the Braves 1957 season, including scoring from all the World Series games. A few box score clippings are in there as well.
  15. I've had to be the "bad guy" in regards to Christmas travel, two years in a row. Last Christmas Eve we were supposed to leave for up north, and as many will remember, we practically had a blizzard. We had to decide not to go, which resulted in my wife in tears. This year we left on the 23rd to beat the storm...Christmas morning the weather was starting to turn bad up at her folks' place. I had to basically get us out the door to get going so we could get some distance before all the rain started to freeze...resulting in my wife crying. I don't like being the bad guy. The roads were pretty bad for quite a while during the first part of our drive, so I'm glad we left when we did, though.
  16. I'm guessing he wasn't acquired simply to be flipped again. There are probably somewhat more realistic trade targets to be possibly discussing at this point.
  17. I bet the Brewers would. I don't know if Sheets would, though.
  18. I remember there was a rumor not too long ago that the Brewers were considering a "Milwaukee" alternate road jersey. I have no idea if that is going to happen or not, though.
  19. This screams hometown discount to me. Yes, they're rare in MLB, but they happen.
  20. It wouldn't surprise me. They should know by now Joba works better in the pen than as a starter.
  21. Please. I think you are overrating Vazquez (again, just a one year rental anyway at this point), and Morrow might not even be able to be a full time starter. People are clinging to these half baked upgrade ideas like they would have been the salvation of the franchise for years to come. Of course later the same people would be complaining that Melvin had dealt all our possible trade chips. Also, I really doubt most would have been OK with the idea of Escobar starting at SS last year.
  22. Yeah, the idea that Melvin should have traded Hardy before '09 is a joke. Escobar wasn't ready and fans would have revolted after the season Hardy had in '08. All this revisionist criticism gets kind of old.
  23. I would love to see Hughes as a Brewer. I think he's one of the few Yankees I can actually stand for some reason. Would love to see him in the Brewers rotation. I think it might take something like Hart/Salome/a prospect reliever to get it done, though.
  24. It's not just this thread. It seems like every move getting made lately results in a "Why the hell didn't Melvin go for this guy?", type of diabtribe.
  25. Some of you should just admit you hate Melvin and are using any reason possible to bash him. Just admit it and set yourselves free and you'll feel a lot better. These theoretical trade scenarios are getting silly.
