  1. Weird that they would know what division he's going to, but not which specific team exactly. This whole Chapman thing has just been plain weird from day one. Edit: Twitter is full of references to Chapman taking a flight from Florida to Cincinnati this morning, so there might really be something to this Reds rumor.
  2. My guess is that his days as a starter may be over. He could be a viable long reliever type yet, though.
  3. Hasn't it been statistically shown that IBBs tend to bite the other team in the rear more often than not? ie. it's better to not give up walks at all? I thought I remember someone posting data that showed that a while ago on this forum.
  4. I just am not that interested in it. I am not trying to sound jingoistic, but I have a feeling the "MLB Champions" would end up trouncing the Japanese Champions. Such a series would also take away from the World Series' importance, and that would be very bad for MLB in the long run. I also think that by the time the World Series wraps up, most fans are ready for the off-season and the Hot Stove. I would guess most MLB players would also hate the idea of all the extra travel, and the MLBPA would probably have major issues with it. Perhaps an exhibition game (or two or three) between the two champions would be more viable and palatable than another full on championship series tacked on after the World Series. Also, I have never understood the angst of calling the MLB Champions the "World Champions". MLB is basically the oldest organized pro baseball league around, and features players from all over the world. Calling it the "World Series" is more tradition than anything, regardless. Personally, I like the spirit of the World Baseball Classic. I think it could stand some tweaking, but I think it has the potential to be somewhat on par with the World Cup in terms of what it means to the sport.
  5. Nice list, MNBrew. If we really need a veteran utility player, I'd have to think we could get Loretta relatively cheap on a one year deal. Would be kind of nice to see him finish out his career here, after having been a big part of some of the "down years" for the franchise. I think Baldelli is probably out of the Brewers' price range based on past reputation and "upside." Having said this, I'm not sure we really need "infield depth", like you suggest. We already have Counsell, and Gamel could be called up if something happens to McGehee (or if Weeks inevitably gets hurt again). They also have Heether and Iribarren available on the cheap. They aren't going to pay someone $4-5 million to be a utility type, as they just don't have the payroll flexibility. If we had more money, Miguel Tejada would be a phenomenal pickup. Damon is pretty intriguing (assuming Hart could be traded, like Ennder suggests), but I have a suspicion his pride won't let him "settle" for signing with a team like the Brewers. Melvin would probably have to overpay to get him to play here, and by that point he isn't worth it. They will definitely sign another pitcher before Spring Training, probably one of the oft-mentioned three (my guess would be Washburn at this point, but who really knows?). They will also sign Mark Mulder, so there is your "high potential, injury dude" signing.
  6. Seems most people present two alternatives to Wolf: Sign a couple hypothetical "injury guys" (forgetting they would be as expensive or more expensive than Wolf's first year), and hope to hell they are available to pitch in MLB by the All-Star break. Or, the second option is that Melvin should develop powers of premonition and find "the next Javier Vasquez" via trade. I think I'd rather look at reality and be reasonably happy with Wolf for now.
  7. Supposedly it was a one year deal for $5 million. Maybe the Brewers could offer him something like 2 years and $10 million total to get something done?
  8. The Brewers may have overpaid slightly for Wolf (aren't most free agents overpaid?), but it wasn't a gross overpayment like some on this board try to make it out to be. Wolf is a better pitcher than Myers anyway.
  9. Not necessarily. If you noticed with the Bucks game last night, it wasn't in true HD. There were bars on the sides, and the game's actual aspect ratio was traditional 4:3, not the widescreen 16:9. So they could continue doing the same with Brewers games, even if the "HD channel" is now full time. I would expect more HD Brewers broadcasts than last year, though. Hopefully FSN has acquired the equipment and bandwidth capacity to allow for that.
  10. Already being discussed: http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=21169
  11. I think a lot of the anti-Alomar arguments are flimsy, "He's not a 'first ballot guy', but I'll vote for him next time", type excuses. I expect and hope that he gets in next time. I was never a huge Alomar fan (didn't follow him closely enough to be honest), but he has the numbers.
  12. I think the big problem for Larkin is that he was always sort of in Ozzie Smith's shadow as the best SS in the NL.
  13. The big market teams do it too. I think I remember reading how the Mets were paying Bobby Bonilla's contract off for several years after his retirement.
  14. I don't know much about him, but from what I've heard, Heether is considered more versatile than Iribarren. He may have more power as well. I think that's what Iribarren's chances aren't seen as that great for making the MLB club next season.
  15. If the networks do drop OTA broadcasting, I have to imagine it will be quite a few years down the line yet. I wouldn't be worrying about that at this point.
  16. Buy some booze for the parents. OK, in all seriousness, I have no idea.
  17. You can stream Netflix via the PS3, though currently you need to have a special Netflix disc loaded in your PS3 to do it. That could change in the future, though. I don't have a Netflix account myself, so I'm going off second hand info here. My whole problem with streaming is that I'm very picky in terms of audio and video. I want HD picture with Dolby Digital sound, etc. Also, while I often complain about Charter and the price we pay, I received every single Brewers game last year, and all the HD ones included (other than maybe five games that weren't broadcast at all the entire season). I guess I place a personal premium on that. But hey, if you can get by without paying for cable/satellite, more power to you.
  18. Yeah, according to reports it seems like a forgone conclusion that Mulder will sign with the Brewers by spring training at the latest. It will probably be a minor league deal with some incentives, etc. He won't be ready to pitch in MLB by Opening Day or anything.
  19. Yeah, the grass isn't always greener, as they say.
  20. Weeks played in 129 games in '08, and 118 in '07. Beyond that he has never even played more than 100 games in a single season (granted in '05 he was called up mid-season and played in 96 games, but that's going quite a ways back now). It is more likely than not he won't play a full season, based on past evidence. If he plays the majority of this year, I will be very pleasantly surprised.
  21. Supposedly Chien-Ming Wang could be ready to pitch in MLB by May, according to latest info out there. I wonder if Melvin decides to kick the tires on him.
  22. Next year's "first timer" class looks kind of lean. Jeff Bagwell stands out. Under normal circumstances, Palmeiro should be a lock, but with the steroid thing it wouldn't surprise me if he gets a vote count similar to McGwire's.
  23. Which highway? I already changed some plans for today based on the weather, personally.
  24. Why can't it ever just snow overnight and be done? I hate this constant snow in the middle of the day stuff.
  25. Latest on MLBTR is that the Marlins are probably out of it and that the Angels are looking like the favorites. The rich keep getting richer in this game, I guess.
