  1. Yeah, I agree. I don't see the point in trading Gamel for an OK-ish starter when one can be signed on the FA market right now.
  2. Players have to pass a physical before a trade is completed, so I'm not sure what the problem would be there. Lowell ended up not going to the Rangers because he didn't pass a physical. No harm done there.
  3. The Ferrell story is interesting, but I think sells him a bit short, pitchleague. He was an eight time All-Star and held the record for most games caught in the AL until Carlton Fisk broke it in '88. Maybe he shouldn't be in the HoF, but he wasn't a scrub either.
  4. One of those quirky statistics that probably helped Dawson's case: There are only three players to ever hit more than 400 HRs and steal over 300 bases. The other two are Bonds and Mays.
  5. Yeah, while I don't put much stock in the rumor, I think I would be more excited to get Damon for say, 1 year and $8 million than Davis/Washburn/Garland for the same. I am not confident Hart can be dealt for any sort of decent pitcher, though. Got a tweet from Haudricourt. He says he spoke with Gord Ash and that "no move is pending, they are just being proactive.
  6. I'd also add again that now with Dawson in, and Rice going in last year, I feel Dave Parker has an even stronger case. I don't get why he's been so ignored.
  7. Weird rumor of the day: Peter Gammons supposedly says the Brewers are looking at Johnny Damon. I have no link, it's something someone on the JSOnline blog referenced.
  8. Wasn't Melvin going to be talking to Mark Mulder this week? Would a roster spot immediately need to be cleared for him if he signs?
  9. Yeah, I think the "first ballot" thing is silly too. I like Tom Haudricourt's idea that guys shouldn't have to "pledge" to get into the Hall of Fame. If a guy gets voted in on the first ballot, does he get a platinum plaque instead or something?
  10. Like others pointed out, the Lopez trade was made when the team still had a fairly realistic shot at the playoffs. He did not cost much of anything, and performed extremely well with the Brewers. I wish people would keep pointing to that as some horrible trade, or make it sound like Melvin wasn't TRYING to trade for pitching help.
  11. I have never been to the Hall, but I can't imagine that if someday when I visit it, my experience is going to be diminished that much by seeing an Andre Dawson plaque. I guess I don't think voting in the borderline guys diminishes the accomplishments of the other HoFers, or what the Hall means to baseball as a whole. And keep in mind I said I wouldn't have voted for Dawson.
  12. I feel bad for Blyleven missing by so little. Kind of a travesty if you ask me. I'm not that bothered by Dawson. I don't think he should have gotten in, but I think he was pretty borderline.
  13. Yes he was horrible, terrible and not very good. He was below replacement level. If we didn't have Suppan we might now have a better clue about Narveson. Aside from a few really bad starts, he was probably about replacement level, not below it. And I didn't realize Narveson was such a highly regarded prospect until roughly August '09. If we're pinning our hopes on Narveson in 2010, we're really in trouble. Besides, Narveson proved himself as an MLB option to be looked at in Spring Training. I don't really know how much more "showcasing" he should have gotten in '09.
  14. I think it should be viewed as such. I think if Fielder will sign a deal similar to Holliday's (maybe a bit more per year or adding an extra year), it would be well worth it. Without Fielder the Brewers' offense becomes much more impotent. We already have Braun on a discounted deal through 2015. If the Brewers aren't willing to pay Fielder with not much money committed beyond 2010, I will really be disheartened.
  15. Just think how much more screwed the Brewers would have been last season if they hadn't had Suppan around. We would have had to rely on someone like Mike Burns even more. Aside from 3-4 really horrid outings, Suppan was not that horrible last season. "Downright brutal" is a stretch. Yes, very overpaid, but the Brewers needed him last year and will probably need him this coming year. Hopefully after 2010, Parra will have proven himself to be a competent pitcher, or perhaps someone in the minors will be ready to join the rotation.
  16. MLB Trade Rumors has a story up that the Twins have apparently made a one year offer to Washburn. Melvin may want to step up and try to get someone sooner than later before the options dry up. I really don't want to see him go two years on Washburn if the Twins are only offering one, though. Maybe a one year deal with a mutual option for the second or something. I do think the division is going to come down to the Cards and Brewers this season. The Cubs are starting to look long in the tooth, and haven't made any really major upgrades. The other three teams in the division could be pretty awful. The Crew needs another starter if for nothing more than depth through the season. I would love to see the Brewers make a nice run this year and finish ahead of the Cards, and shut their fans up a bit. Last season left a bad taste in my mouth after how we showed them up early in the year. I have to disagree with some of the people pining for Smoltz. He'll be 43 next year, and while he had some success with the Cards, he was mostly pretty bad last season. I think some team will overpay for him based on his past HoF caliber career, and I don't think it should be the Brewers.
  17. He was a Brewers announcer when I was a little kid, so I can't say I remember him. I did hear he would fill in for Uke on the radio, though. Seems like he was well regarded as a good professional to work with, from what I've read.
  18. He played about 8.5 seasons with Seattle and 8 with Arizona, so I don't think going in as a D-Back is a big stretch. I believe it's ultimately up to the Hall of Fame to decide though, isn't it?
  19. I'd also like to point out this signing (and the Lackey one, to an extent) kind of shoot down the idea that every team except the Brewers were getting major discounts due to the economy.
  20. I like the way Melvin handled Hardy and Hall last season. Players who don't live up to what they are paid deserve to be held accountable more often. Maybe part of it was "sending a signal to the team", but part of it was making room for younger players who could get some playing time, so the team could see what they had going into next year. Ultimately if Hardy and Hall had a problem with it, they could look in the mirror and see who was to blame.
  21. Kind of sad to see the big guy go. One of my most vivid memories was seeing him hit his first (only?) home run of his career at Miller Park a few years ago. I'm sort of glad to see him hang up the cleats before he deteriorated too much.
  22. I don't understand what possible need Boston has for Hall at this point. Maybe they figure Lowell is a complete loss for the season, which could be a factor.
  23. It's an overpay. He's not going to be that good over the course of the contract, more than likely, and I say that as someone who likes him as a player. The upside for the Brewers is that if the Cardinals do re-sign Pujols to a similarly large deal (and it could end up being much more), St. Louis' payroll flexibility will probably decline quite a bit.
  24. Also want to add that I installed Firefox and it's running much more reliably than IE was. No crashes for me so far, whereas IE crashed again this morning when I tried to use it.
  25. I like Holliday, but we have no realistic place for him, and he's going to get overpaid solely based on the fact he's the best OF available this off-season. He's a great player, but he's probably going to be paid like an upper echelon star, which he really isn't.
