  1. According to Tom Haudricourt, Macha will indeed be back next year, and the Brewers have added a club option for 2011 as well. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/63476917.html St. Louis - Brewers general manager Doug Melvin confirmed Sunday morning what had become increasingly obvious in recent days, that manager Ken Macha would be returning in 2010 for the second year of his two-year contract. But, in an added twist, Melvin added an option to Macha's contract for the 2011 season. Otherwise, Macha would have returned with "lame duck" status for next year. "He didn't ask for (the option)," said Melvin. "He said, "It doesn't matter to me. I don't do this job for security. I do it to win ball games. "The option tells him I do support him in his role as manager." Melvin also invited back bench coach Willie Randolph, hitting coach Dale Sveum, third base coach Brad Fischer and first base coach Ed Sedar. Melvin said he is not offering contracts at this time to interim pitching coach Chris Bosio and bullpen coach Stan Kyles but would consider them for positions in the organization, including their current roles. Let the firestorm begin!
  2. MUST WIN! OK, not really, but a sweep would be nice.
  3. Yeah, I saw that Valentine is talking with the Marlins. I wonder if Melvin would see his personality as being somewhat disruptive to the current clubhouse. Certainly he'd probably be more energetic and outgoing than Macha is.
  4. I think Witrado might have some kind of vendetta against Braun, or was just throwing out that trade idea to get attention. I found his logic for the trade premise to be very flawed. Why would they possibly trade him after the season he has had? It would kill off the fan base and demoralize the club. His contract is too affordable to trade at this point. Edit: I e-mailed Tom Haudricourt, asking him about this, and he replied about two minutes later: "I would be stunned if Ryan Braun is traded. All you have to do is look at performance vs. pay to realize what they have in him." Yeah, I think I'll tend to put more stock in what Haudricourt has to say about this than Witrado at this point.
  5. I get the feeling with Suppan starting tomorrow that a sweep may be hard to come by. Good job playing hard against STL, though, Crew.
  6. Yeah, but in the AL East that is like a pensioner's budget.
  7. I had heard the Wells contract was instigated more by the ownership, due to wanting to placate the fan base. If that's true, it's hard to hold it against Ricciardi. Also, he was able to get the White Sox to take Rios, which was considered a pretty good move for the Jays.
  8. Saw this quote on JSOnline and had to chuckle a bit: "Being a Cubs fan, sadly, I'm used to this," he said. "I thought we could go toe-to-toe with Rio. It's typical of Chicago sports. Disappointment and heartbreak?.?.?.?that's what we specialize in, I guess."
  9. Tough 24 hours for GMs, it seems. Per MLB Trade Rumors: "This was a tough decision and a difficult one for me personally as I have enjoyed J.P.'s friendship and his perspective on the game," said Blue Jays acting President and CEO Paul Beeston in a statement. "J.P. has put an incredible amount of effort into improving the team and he has brought along a number of great young players. However, I feel that it is time for a change and accordingly we have decided to move on." I'm guessing the fiasco with Roy Halladay didn't help things.
  10. And somewhere BoSox and Yankees fans are slobbering all over themselves.
  11. They were talking about this on MLB Network last night, and now it's on MLB Trade Rumors: The San Diego Padres will part ways with general manager Kevin Towers, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com (via Twitter). Brock tweets that, while no official announcement has been made yet, the Padres will let the longest-tenured GM in the majors go. The ownership transition in San Diego, from John Moores to Jeff Moorad, likely spelled the end for Towers. ESPN.com's Rob Neyer speculated earlier today that Moorad wanted to bring in "his own guy" for the position. Towers has been San Diego's GM since 1995, and saw the team win four division titles during the stint. The Padres made one World Series during Towers' tenure, losing to the Yankees in 1998. Edit: Added Ricciardi news to thread title --cc
  12. Not too go all political, but I was kind of angry to hear how there's already people on the radio trying to spin this like this was some huge failure for Barack Obama. Like everything has to be some major political story related to the president. I'm guessing Rio gets it due to South America having never hosted an Olympics, and that was probably one of the main factors. They probably had some infrastructure concerns about Chicago as well. I'm just speculating, though.
  13. On that note I guess you could put Ryan Braun up there as well. Though if that happened, I would be severely motivated to drive to Miller Park and attempt to storm Doug Melvin's offices single handedly.
  14. Thanks for posting that link. Lots of cool pictures. I had forgotten how rather lame looking the '93 era Bernie was. That one makes the current costume look like it came from a Hollywood movie studio.
  15. I could live without seeing MLB for a year or so if it meant major changes to a broken system.
  16. To be blunt, I really don't care about the Olympics. They're always way over-hyped, and all the coverage gets tiresome. I'll catch a few events on TV here and there, but for the most part I don't really give a darn about the games. That said, I think Chicago hosting would be a good thing. There would almost certainly be positive benefits for Wisconsin by having the games take place so close by. It won't be huge, but it will have some impact. As far as Chicagoans getting boastful...well, that isn't exactly going to be a change of pace. Since I rarely ever go to Chicago (I hate driving down there), I don't really care what their citizens think.
  17. Really excellent article. I'd encourage any baseball and sports fan to read it. I don't follow hockey, but I am starting to think I may want to get into the NHL, just because their system seems to make so much more sense for all the teams, not just a select few big market clubs. I like a lot of his ideas...I think some would have to be tweaked. He proposed 7 teams from each league enter the post-season (including four wildcards in each league), which would mean literally half the AL would make the playoffs. Something like this would probably make more sense once MLB takes the logical step of expanding to an even 32 teams. I do like the idea of the one game "shoot outs" between the wild cards, and having the second round (current first round, essentially) be a full seven game playoff. He also laid out how illogical and stupid MLB's current draft is. Hopefully, I think virtually everyone involved with baseball understands that fact, and hopefully major changes to the June draft are on the near horizon, including fixing the broken system of recruiting international players.
  18. http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/10/mcclung_tweets_from_the_heart.html McClung last month set up an account on Twitter -- @73_MC -- and has used it to communicate with fans during a busy month. McClung returned Sept. 19 from about seven weeks on the disabled list with a sprained elbow, but before appearing in Thursday's series finale at Coors Field he had only pitched once since being activated. On Wednesday night, he tweeted: "U know that saying, the writing is on the wall? I think I can make out more than just letters concerning me." McClung, who is arbitration-eligible after the season, was asked on Thursday morning to clarify. He was hesitant to take his feelings to the media. "It can be interpreted any way you want," McClung said of his tweet. "I'm not complaining, I'm not trying to make trouble. I'm just frustrated. I don't mean to talk about it in the media, but I'm honest with myself and it's hard to watch situations come up in which I've performed exceedingly well in the past, and get passed over. Now we're going on nine days since I've pitched last. I'm not saying I'm better than anybody else, I just think it's my turn. Beyond that, I really don't want to talk about it in the media."
  19. Yeah, I remember hearing about how the early '80s Brewers teams were supposedly very good at stealing signs. I don't get what the big deal is.
  20. Yeah, you're probably right. I could just see the ownership deciding they need to shake things up to keep the fan base in good spirits, but I'm thinking more and more they will probably retain Macha...though he'll be on a very short leash next season.
  21. I'm really not looking forward to the last series against the Cards. I may not watch or listen to them...though I know I probably will out of habit. I know I shouldn't say this, but does anyone else think that if the Brewers play really bad and get swept by St. Louis, that may make Melvin and Attanasio decide that Macha is not who this club needs as manager next season?
  22. Wow, you would have made a good wartime general during World War II or something. Scorched earth policy, if I ever saw one.
  23. A painful tweet from Haudricourt earlier: "Parra finishes the year with 6.36 ERA. Bush is done at 6.38. Suppan is at 5.30. Looper is at 5.10. Nice starting rotation the Brewers have." For the record, Gallardo finished with a 3.73 ERA.
  24. I think you'd have to look at something like that if the Brewers don't have to give up too much else.
