  1. I'm sorry, but how the hell does anyone here know the Fasano family's spending habits and budget? This thread took a really odd turn fast.
  2. Maybe four to five players is a stretch, but you can't trade Fielder for just one very good young pitcher and another throw in prospect. That's what a lot of fans from other teams seem to be suggesting. I'm not sure about Murphy from the Mets. A lot of people seem to think he's terrible. I'll admit I haven't seen enough of him to make a judgement one way or another. Also, the Brewers aren't "shopping Fielder for salary reasons." They're shopping him (possibly) because they know they won't be able to retain him after 2011. They don't need to dump his salary for next season of 2011, either.
  3. What I'm thinking is that the team should make a huge contract offer to Fielder that get leaked to the media, very soon after the season ends. When Boras inevitably declines a second major offer from the Brewers for Prince, it will make it much easier to trade him in the eyes of the public. Then they take less of a PR hit that way.
  4. I don't expect Lopez to be a Brewer next season, which basically renders this discussion moot. They'll offer him arbitration which he'll almost certainly decline, and he'll sign a 2 or 3 year deal elsewhere, I assume.
  5. That's pretty much why I don't watch wrestling much anymore...just doesn't have the excitement it did in the late '90s.
  6. It's amazing that Hoffman is close to 40 saves, with as bad as the team has been. He needs to come back next year. Even if he slips just slightly, he'll still be worth it. If you don't sign him, they'll just have to overpay to bring in someone else, or go with some crummy internal option that they'll have to scramble to replace mid-season if they're in contention. Hoffman is worth it, for his performance. It's also nice for the franchise that he puts butts in seats and moves merchandise, too.

  9. Prince has proven he is no longer a defensive liability. I think the team would be OK with him at 1B for a number of years if he continues to put up around 40 homers and an OPS around 1.000. He is only 25, not 30 or so like some seem to pretend. We got lucky, locking up Braun for 6 more years. It's too bad a similar option doesn't seem possible with Fielder. For further evidence of what AJAY was talking about, go look at the discussion about Prince Fielder on MLB Trade Rumors. I posted over there that I think it's disgusting that fans of teams like Boston get to talk about acquiring Prince (an All-Star caliber player with many years in his prime left), while Brewers fans are relegated to discussing obtaining prospects 95% of the fans going to Miller Park have probably never heard of. It's a real joke.
  10. Plus the fact that, like the Cardinals, they also have a huge regional fan base. The real coup for Boston is also having an unofficial national TV network on ESPN...
  11. Don Walker has a new article up on the Journal Sentinel where Mark Attanasio acknowledges that trading Prince may be a possibility. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/61948787.html
  12. Don Walker has a new article out that points out that while Milwaukee gets compared to St. Louis a lot, Milwaukee is the 35th largest TV market while St. Louis is 21st...so they are quite a bit bigger and not as small as some would make them out to be. They also have a huge regional fan base due to being the only team out "west" for years and years, and huge exposure on their old AM flagship station (KMOX, I think).
  13. Wow, what a heart breaker of a story. Hope things work out for his family, one way or another.
  14. This would seem to bring the Brewers one step closer to making Randolph the manager if Macha is fired.
  15. The other problem with the Twins is that while they seem to be competitive every year, they play in a somewhat average or even weak division where it's not that tough to be "competitive". Also, while they occasionally make the playoffs, they haven't been to a World Series in many years. It seems like they never have the capability to make one big move to get them "over the hump." I'd have to give the nod to Theo Epstein as the best GM in baseball currently. Multiple playoff appearances and two World Series Championships this decade. Like others mentioned, they have the cash to pay big free agents, but also have a loaded farm system...a pretty potent combination. I would also mention Kenny Williams of the White Sox. I kind of like how he does things. He is aggressive and has shown he's willing to take risks, though sometimes too much. The White Sox are usually in the thick of things each year, and again have had multiple playoff appearances this decade, as well as a World Series Championship. They also don't seem shy about cutting ties with older players when the time is right, or making a deal to better the club for a playoff run.
  16. I think you confused yourself. I was referring more to Cleveland's repeated loss of star players. You can't pretend that won't affect the morale of a fan base, and consequently affect the attendance.
  17. I think Bush is fine, assuming he can bounce back from his issues of this season. That said, you can't expect to build a rotation around him and Gallardo, with such mediocrity in Soup & Loop, and not knowing if Parra will ever fulfill his "potential". As far as the issue in CF, I stand by my earlier assessment that Cameron's cost is just going to outweigh the benefits he brings to a team like the Brewers. If they retain him and that means holding onto a rotation similar to this year's, it's going to be a total waste of money anyway.
  18. After about the first month of the season I didn't really notice that it wasn't Jim Powell in the booth anymore. While I don't think you can really replace a talent like Mr. Powell, I thought Cory did a great job as the season got along. It seems like him and Uke have some good chemistry together, which is about all you can ask for.
  19. The starters - 4 D's and a B...that will get you kicked out of school. This made me chuckle, as it's pretty much a dead on accurate assessment of the season.
  20. Agreed. Here's to hoping next year leads to similar memories.
  21. Yeah...and even though they've already clinched the division, it would be nice to knock around the Cards in St. Louis to end the season and remind them that we'll be gunning for them in '10.
  22. He'd be an upgrade over Kendall, that's for sure. I think he'd be worth a look, but with so many teams being "catching dry", I bet a team will be willing to overpay to bring him in. Blanco could be a decent option...though earlier this year I couldn't believe he was even still playing and has seemingly gotten better with age.
  23. As far as I'm concerned, the Braves wore out their welcome in the '90s. I'd like to see the Rockies make the World Series again.
  24. Nice analysis. I more or less agree with your grades.
  25. I could see Attanasio bumping the payroll up, not sure by how much. They have to realize this "window of opportunity" is closing pretty quick. With Fielder certainly gone with two years, they should do something this off-season to really go for it this year. I'm just not sure if it's fiscally possible.
