  1. A luxury tax is very different from the idea of a hard salary cap that is being suggested. The luxury tax in baseball is apparently a total joke.
  2. If something like 7-8 years and $140-160 million can get Prince signed, I think the Brewers need to seriously look at it, and they need to propose it this off-season. The offense is going to be quite lackluster with him gone.
  3. Well, he's here for six more seasons at least (barring an unforseeable trade). I also see from that article he is a spokesman now for AirTran Airways, which I had not heard about. Also, while "tavern and grill" might not be synonymous with fine dining, "Lake Geneva" and "restaurant" are generally synonymous with expensive. I look forward to checking it out when it opens.
  4. Most of the readers on that blog aren't really looking for super in-depth coverage of propsects. I think Haudricourt does a pretty good job over all.
  5. Something seems wrong with that phrase. Yeah, but that's due to the WBC this year.
  6. That's not a good analogy because it's not like C.C. was selling his services for a stated price (at least as far as any of us know).
  7. I just got Borderlands the other day and it's pretty good. The RPG elements are definitely minimized...like others said, it's a lot of "go hear, shoot something, report back" type stuff. You can level up fairly quickly and gain new skills and abilities. The guns I've seen so far are pretty creative and varied, and I've only played for a handful of hours. I would say it's sort of a more action oriented version of Fallout 3, with less storyline. I haven't played the online mode yet, so I can't comment on that.
  8. You're forgetting that the Yankees probably overpaid by at least a bit (relatively speaking) to scare off other bidders. It doesn't matter because I think the Yankees were intent on paying basically any price it took to land C.C. It was a fair offer...the Yankees offer was irresponsible, but you can't blame Sabathia for taking it.
  9. "says hi" is one of those swarmy message board sayings that has become accepted usage on the internetz.
  10. One other thing that ties into an earlier part of the discussion...how much does it suck to be an Indians fan right now? Sabathia vs Lee in the first game of the World Series. That has to hurt.
  11. My wife works in public education (she's a counselor) at a high school. She has great benefits, makes significantly more than me, and gets about six weeks off a summer (not three months like some people seem to think). She has to take those continuing education credits, and has worked in summer in the past (she didn't this year because she didn't really have to...instead she did some projects around the house we had been putting off). Still, I would not want her job despite all the benefits and time off, because of the amount of [expletive deleted by mod] and headaches she has to put up with from bad students, students in bad situations, and their families. I could not tolerate some of the garbage she puts up with on a daily basis. People in public education often work long hours and work very hard (the idea that they're out the door by 3:30 PM every day is a joke). I don't think a few weeks off in the summer (it's not like they came up with our country's outdated schooling schedule) should be held against them. (edit: language --1992)
  12. Actually, some of Boras' clients do work out deals with their teams, but usually only before hitting FA. So the fact that Prince took a two year deal isn't really all that unheard of for a Scott Boras client. I do think a lot of it will come down to Prince's personal feelings, like you said. Part of me thinks he isn't really a big city guy. Imagine if he went to play for the Boston, and had one bad season, looking slightly overweight. The media there would never let him hear the end of it. In Milwaukee there's a lot less scrutiny overall for a baseball player. He may decide he likes playing with Ryan Braun and Co. and is willing to take only a huge amount of money instead of an insane amount of money to stay for a few more years. I wouldn't bet on it, but it isn't impossible.
  13. It's hard to imagine a game or series being "fixed" in this day and age. Just one team personnel person or player's relative gets whiff of it, and it would be on some blog within an hour. Within 24 hours it would be blowing up all over ESPN and be a cover story on SI the next week. It just seems to unbelievable that a player or players would risk the amount of money they make in this era to take some short term "pay off."
  14. So, I forget the rules...does Houston get him outright, or is there a chance some kind of trade will be worked out?
  15. I just hope that when the Yankees inevitably win the World Series again, at least some of the commentators say the facts and just say "Well, they outspend everyone in the off-season and bought their way to a championship." It won't happen, but it would be nice to get some truth instead of the inevitable sugar-coated talk about the great and historic franchise that's bound to occur. I don't get how their fans can really get all that excited about it either. I remember a few years ago when the Yankees won their last championship, The Daily Show called them, "a rag tag band of millionaire free agents." That about sums up this current Yankees team as well.
  16. This seems weird to me. Has McGwire worked as a coach or instructor in the minors or anything before? He was a great hitter in his time, but usually those aren't the kind of guys that make for good hitting coaches. This seems more like a P.R. move to rally the fans after a disappointing post-season for St. Louis. This also seems to signal that LaRussa will be returning as manager next year. That said, I don't have a personal beef with the guy. Yeah, he most likely cheated, but so did hundreds of other players during his era. I kind of hope everyone just moves on and forgets about it at this point.
  17. I agree with Briggs. Braun is likely going to go down as one of the greatest Brewers of all time. Trading him now (or in a year or two) would have been like trading Robin Yount or Paul Molitor circa 1981...disastrous for both the lineup and the morale of the fan base.
  18. I guess the only hope is that come 2011, Mark Attanasio and many of the other smaller market owners demand some real change. I expect it could turn into an ugly fight. If they just quietly sign another CBA deal like last time, I'm going to be extremely disappointed. Pretty much everyone but the largest market teams agree that the draft system is broken, and that there is too much disparity in team payrolls. It's time to quit talking and start doing something to fix it.
  19. Yeah, I'm not really into the whole airbrushed skull thing that seems to be the rage these days. But you have to give credit to Braun for doing something like this on his own. I wish him success. The more money he can make in ventures like this, I assume he's more likely to remain a Brewer for life.
  20. The sentiment would probably be more against Boras, but I don't care either way. Players turn stuff against the team all the time. At least if they offer him a large contract (for the second time), it will show the Brewers are serious about trying to keep him, and trying to field a winner. Then when he leaves in FA or gets traded, it will dull the pain felt by the fanbase somewhat.
  21. I would never condone excessive police actions, but I also have always had a hard time being overly sympathetic towards people who's questionable actions have gotten them into these situations in the first place. I know that sounds pretty judgmental, but there are people who actually live there lives carefully and in a manner that avoids any types of run ins with the police. All or most of the police brutality cases I am aware of involve "victims" who don't appear to be living their lives in this type of manner. I agree with this. For some reason our society is really quick to not be too judgmental of criminals. This guy did something to warrant arrest. I'm not saying police have the right to dole out excessive use of force, but some people would do better to not put themselves in these kinds of situations to begin with.
  22. I'd offer him something huge like 10 years/$160 million. Make sure it gets leaked to the public, so when Boras inevitably turns it down, everyone knows who the real devil is. If he takes it, then you have some good cost certainty at a fair price for the next decade.
  23. Color me unexcited. I think these games will be long and somewhat boring. Of course I'll be cheering for the Phillies to win, but it's not like I'm excited to see them repeat, either.
  24. Well, the NFL and NBA have more playoff spots too, so teams repeating is more likely to happen. The fact that baseball has the fewest playoff spots in the major sports, and yet the same teams repeat regularly, should say a lot about the supposed "parity" that Selig likes to proclaim regularly.
  25. Teams don't give up that much good young pitching anymore, even for marquee position players, so the whole discussion is a moot point.
