  1. Well, if he's paying himself back for the acquisition of the team. I can't really hold that against him, though. It's not like a lot of baseball owners sit around and take personal losses on their investments.
  2. They really need to fire Yost This was on the JSOnline blog comments and it made me chuckle.
  3. It comes down to the whole chicken & egg thing. The team needs more money to be competitive, but a lot of people want the team to be competitive before spending more money on them. So far Mark Attanasio and his ownership group have earned my trust, and I will keep going to games until they do something major to lose my trust.
  4. From what I caught on 1250, it seemed like Melvin said would people would like to hear, but didn't sugar coat anything. I think he was fairly honest, at least as much as you can expect from any sports GM.
  5. Sounds like they want to keep the streak of 3 million fans per year alive...sounds like they will be aggressive this winter. I just hope they mean it.
  6. You are right (bamberger) that Molitor was probably a sacrificial lamb of sorts to prove Selig's point about "small market woes". It was a giant middle finger to the fans of Milwaukee though...along with Yount and Ganter, he was the face of the franchise at that point. He went out the following season and was the World Series MVP with Toronto, which further rubbed salt in the wound. The Brewers blatantly low balled him, and it was very transparent to the fans that he was justified in leaving at that point. While Molitor was "just a DH" at that point, he was still a very potent hitter. I'm sorry, but you just don't let a player like that walk away for nothing if you want to be taken seriously as a franchise. The Brewers at that point did not, and that's also why Robin Yount decided to retire after the following year. Selig wanted to be non-competitive and run on the cheap so he could advance his vendetta against MLB and pursue a new stadium (which was ultimately a good thing, at least the latter part).
  7. I don't think you could ask for a better game. I was pulling for the Tigers because of their story this year, but I can't begrudge the Twins. I really hope they can get past the damn Yankees, though. I really think MLB should make these one game shootouts permanent each year...maybe add an extra Wild Card "winner" and have them do a one game playoff like this for the final spot.
  8. I think it's not the pot use that bothers people, as much as it shows a lack of maturity and personal responsibility. I don't like the idea of adding him to the 40 man roster, but if they are fairly sure he'll screw up again, I guess they should bite the bullet and do it. May as well salvage something from the guy. I like the idea of trying to fast track him as a reliever. He can always be converted to a starter later on if he's really good.
  9. Who I got: Yankee 3, Twins 2 Red Sox 3, Angels 0 Phillies 3, Rockies 1 Dodgers 3, Cardinals 1 Red Sox 4, Yankees 2 Dodgers 4, Phillies 3 WS: Dodgers 4, Red Sox 3. As far as who I'd want, I'm probably pulling for the Dodgers and Twins to go to the World Series, and don't really care who wins as long as it's a well played series.
  10. Yeah...plus the fact that he is the only person out there pushing this "The team might trade Ryan Braun", angle, makes me think there is nothing to it and he simply has some sort of weird vendetta against him. Maybe Braun slighted him at a party or something. Oh, and as far as Greinke, I think it's more likely that the Royals try to extend him again than trade him. That guy has become like a god in Kansas City.
  11. Yeah, like I kind of alluded to earlier, I'm not excited to see him back, but I don't think you can throw him under the bus after being handed such a horrible starting rotation. The offense performed well, even though I often questioned some of his lineups. I also give him credit that he seemed to handle the pitching staff better than Yost did...it's just that he had less to work with.
  12. My guess is he'll be so bitter at the end, he'll go in as an Atlanta Falcon.
  13. About 20 other teams would like to probably sign Lackey, so I doubt it will happen. That said, I agree with your stance that they should pencil Narveson into the #5 role and let Looper walk. Spend that money elsewhere, like acquiring a more expensive SP through trade.
  14. Then the smaller market teams should just threaten to form a new league and be done with it. Let the Yankees, Red Sox, and others play amongst each other for a full season and see how that goes. No other league has a media revenue system as messed up as MLB, to my knowledge. At least they have it set up so everyone shares the internet and MLB Network income.
  15. I agree with that assessment. It seems like beyond Lackey (who we probably have no shot at signing), it's a lot of Jeff Suppan type risky guys that I would think most on this forum would be against signing. Realistically, Melvin is going to have to wheel and deal through trades to improve the club.
  16. You are probably right. I guess whoever did that write up on brewers.com got their info wrong, or I just misread the context.
  17. I agree with you that he's a Boras client, and Satan won't allow him to resign with the Brewers before reaching free agency. The only thing that could remotely change that is if Boras senses there could be a work stoppage in the next couple seasons (current CBA ends after 2011, I think). Maybe that would give him incentive to have Fielder sign a somewhat short term extension. As far as endorsements, he did have a fairly high profile deal with that Bigs video game this year. I guess I've never understood why a Brewers player couldn't get bigger endorsement deals. I think it comes down to the fact that it's been many years since we've had anyone as high profile and good as the likes of Braun and Fielder.
  18. I hadn't realized this, but apparently Gallardo set the franchise record for strikeouts in a a season. Pretty impressive for a 23 year old in his first full season as a starter.
  19. This seems extremely pessimistic. You're being naive if you think there won't at least be some changes to the team next year. Everyone from Mark Attanasio on down knows this team has to make some changes if they want to compete next season. Oh, and with the way Escobar showed he can hit (yes, I know his OBP is still relatively low, but I think he'll improve there), I fully expect him to be the starting shortstop on Opening Day 2010.
  20. If it's around $7 million or so, I think it's fair at this point. He's been worth what he's been paid this year. I don't want to go back to the days of wondering how we're going to get through the late part of games.
  21. I hope that if the Brewers do win, they not only untuck, but do a bit of an extra exuberant celebration to end the year. Just to show the Cards that "Yeah, you're going to the playoffs, but we'll be back next year."
  22. Right. And in that instance the BoSox are probably better off simply re-signing Bay and keeping their good young players.
  23. That is a valid point. Plus position players are usually a safer gamble for long term contracts than pitchers are. But for a market like Toronto, that big contract really limits their ability to make further moves down the line, I imagine. I still think you have to credit Ricciardi for getting the White Sox to take Rios off their hands. That move could help them re-sign Halladay or acquire another top player eventually.
  24. Agreed. I will say I think Witrado's work has somewhat improved over the course of the season (earlier in the year his blog postings were miserable and have gotten much more thorough), but he comes off as fairly arrogant on his radio appearances and seems like he has some kind of axe to grind with certain players. Trading Ryan Braun this off-season would be the equivalent of the proverbial "nuclear option." I would probably quit going to Brewers games for a season in protest, personally.
