  1. I don't remember that incident. What happened there?
  2. Just playing Rivera 2-3 times a week would be a huge workload increase over what we've seen from him this year. I don't think it would hurt too much given there's only about three weeks left in the season.
  3. A baseball team can't always be a meritocracy, like it or not.
  4. Oh, I wasn't complaining about it. Just pointing out the economics involved. Like anything, if you don't like the price, don't buy it.
  5. Fielder and Alcides Escobar for Vazquez? No thanks.
  6. I wonder if Macha is being pressured by Melvin or others to rack up as many wins as possible yet so the record doesn't look so bad at the end of the season. Though really, is there a big difference between 75 wins and 80 wins or so? I don't think the fans will care. Really, such pressure from above is the only justification I can see for him refusing to play the younger guys. Either way, I think it's time to move on to someone with a different managerial philosophy. I don't think his "style" fits this team.
  7. Yeah, Lackey is clearly the best pitcher going on the FA market this off-season. I expect him to re-sign with the Angels or another big market team for a lot of money. We're not going to get him. I wouldn't be interested in seeing Escobar or Washburn at all. They scream more "washed up" than "upside."
  8. I will say this...I think by now we can expect what kind of manager Melvin would hire, given Yost and Macha's similar tendencies. I don't think he has the philosophy to look at someone who will be a bit outside the box, like a Bobby Valentine or Tony LaRussa type guy. Which is probably a shame.
  9. Is the level of available pitching out there really so bad that they can't find a guy to put up a 5.00-ish ERA for only around $1-2 million or so (either call someone up from the minors, or sign a FA veteran, etc). If we're going to overpay a starting pitcher, why can't it be someone who is actually, you know, good?
  10. Yeah, I just dropped the price of some tickets I'm trying to sell for the 26th down a bit because I can see the prices on late season games are crashing down pretty quickly.
  11. Yeah, I thought Hanson was going to get it easily earlier in the season, but he has scuffled someone and not gotten bullpen help, like you said. I just think it's so hard to compare pitchers and hitters in terms of value and "contributions" that it would be nice if they would have separate awards.
  12. I like Stubhub for selling my tickets, but the thing is they take a cut on both ends...they charge the seller a commission on the sale price, and they also charge the buyer a "convenience fee". Pretty ingenious racket.
  13. It's not so much that, it's this kind of logic: "We're six games under .500 and he's six over," said Macha. "As manager, absolutely I want him back. If he really believes that, then I don't think there's much justification for keeping him on.
  14. Isn't Gallardo still in the top five or so in the NL in pitches thrown this season? No real reason to overtax him further at this point. See what guys like Butler can do with some spot starts.
  15. There's an update on the JSOnline blog talking about the weekend pitching situation. Gord Ash asserts that Parra won't make his next scheduled start, but Macha says he "wouldn't rule that out." Does anyone in this organization know their right hand from their left at this point?
  16. In his latest Twitter updates, Haudricourt insinuates that Attanasio is not looking to have a major overhaul of the team this off-season. That probably means Fielder won't be traded.
  17. You say that like he didn't already spend a ton of time in AAA. I assume he'll also play winter ball too. The fact is Hardy is going to get traded this winter, assuming Melvin gets some kind of reasonable offer.
  18. Beautiful HD picture tonight...a good change of pace after the "Dumont Network" picture last night from WMLW. And then there's a "strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play." The worst kind.
  19. Good points about Cleveland. You would think Selig would look at a once successful baseball market like that and realize what is so wrong about the current economic system in "his" sport.
  20. Your anti-Escobar sentiment is getting kind of old. He's not exactly playing poorly in MLB right now, and I doubt was going to do much more in AAA. Hardy on the other hand, as pointed out, was terrible this year.
  21. I know you were probably saying this in jest, but with his current knee issues, I'm guessing that wouldn't be a wise move.
  22. My guess is the first day of the off-season is Macha's last day as Brewers manager. I just have a gut feeling.
  23. Yeah, the Oakland thing is weird. I would love to see the Brewers play them again, if only for nostalgia reasons. I'm excited to see the Mariners come back to Miller Park. Any chance to see Ichiro in person is a treat.
  24. You Sox blinders are showing, big time. Fielder is worth more than Halladay. Halladay would have been a one and a half year "rental" if traded before the deadline this summer...Fielder would be under control for two years. How can you say a 40 HR/.300 AVG guy who plays every day isn't worth more than a pitcher who pitches once every five days? Especially one who is already in his early 30's. I don't buy it. Fielder will be a decent (not great, but not a liability) 1B defensively for at least a couple more years, probably well beyond that. People overstate the weight issue by a lot. If Fielder keeps doing what he is now, fitness-wise, it won't even be an issue for several more years. He's only 25, not over 30. He's worth three to four very good young players. If no team is willing to give up a package like that, he won't be traded. The Brewers can just as easily hold onto him through 2011, and either trade him at the deadline (and probably still get something decent for him), or take a couple high compensatory draft picks. They don't have to trade him...it's arguable they shouldn't, because of the offense he brings to the Brewers right now. So I agree with the last part of your statement there.
  25. Butler was 9-3 between four different levels in the minors this year with a 2.97 era. He was drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft by Tampa Bay before being traded for outfielder Gabe Gross last year. Sounds promising enough.
