  1. He says that as if Corey Patterson is a green rookie. He's 29 and has been in MLB for close to 10 years.
  2. It seems like their ownership a few years back made a concerted effort to stop fielding a mediocre team, and spent the money to do so. It's certainly easy to be envious, but they've had a lot of help by playing in a very mediocre division, especially this season.
  3. I am liking the idea of firing Macha right after the last game of the season more and more. It would give the fan base something to discuss, and show that ownership is not going to be complacent. Go hire Bobby Valentine or someone similar who will think outside the box a bit.
  4. I would love both Rob Deer and Tommy Harper. I never even saw Harper play, but a Pilots bobble head would just be plain cool.
  5. I don't get how they could possibly be "leaning" towards McGehee at this point for next year. Really, other than a couple key positions, most of the roster for next season should be up in the air at this point. I like Casey McGehee, but if they consider him set in stone for 3B next season, that's just idiotic.
  6. Too bad for him. Too bad for me too, as he's on my fantasy team (not that it matters with how bad I've done there). I was hoping the Rays would make a playoff run again, but that is not looking possible at this point.
  7. That's a great quote that sums up things perfectly. Personally, I don't mind Patterson playing, especially if Cameron is hurt, but batting him leadoff is just a total head scratcher. I also agree with the sentiment that Macha has worn thin with his managerial "style". I liked him at first, but he just seems stubborn with the way he manages this team. I would not hate to see him fired after the season is done.
  8. Everyone always talks about following the Twins/A's model, but it seems like few actually want to follow it in this instance. Those two teams constantly turn over their rosters, trading the young guys before they get too expensive, and replacing them with younger guys who are less expensive and under control for more years. Yet when it actually comes time for the Brewers to make similar moves, everyone wants to try and go half way. I don't get it.
  9. Well, I guess that's understandable here since many were clamoring to sign him to a 4 year, $60 million deal before he got hurt (or whatever figures people were using at the time). You just can't really go off what he's done in the past at this point. He could be a completely different pitcher than from before his injury, and he will also be 31 next season. He really should sign an affordable one year deal, maybe with some healthy incentives built in, and prove that he can still be an effective top of the rotation starter.
  10. Most players seem to struggle defensively starting out...most of the guys the Brewers currently have on their current MLB roster, in fact. I'm not worried about Escobar's defense going forward. He's only 22, he's going to have some "growing pains," just like Hardy, Weeks, Braun, Fielder, Hart, Gamel, etc.
  11. Why do some people seem to think that if the team has a losing record, they can't have some fun, or put on a bit of a show for their home crowd? Baseball is supposed to be fun and entertaining.
  12. It's a changing economy. It used to be labor was cheap and technology was expensive. Nowadays, labor is expensive and technology is cheaper than ever.
  13. $14 million for two years is probably way too big a risk at this point. He hasn't pitched in a real game in close to a year, and we know zilch about how his rehab is going right now. I realize he'd of course have to pass a physical, but that's beside the point. I'd say a one year deal around $4-5 million should be much more realistic, given the risk involved for a team like the Brewers. They can't afford to pay a starting pitcher $8 million a year if he isn't guaranteed to be effective. They probably learned their lesson with that from Suppan's contract, fortunately.
  14. Yeah, but you can't figure on either them hitting a home run every other time up. What about just putting your guy in scoring position? A stolen base can do that. I just think Macha is not a very aggressive manager in general, and the lack of steal attempts is reflective of that.
  15. You need to save money for pitching. I say trade Hardy for the best package you can get. It's not like it's certain Hardy is going to bounce back after this season.
  16. It's funny how you can instantly tell that is Prince Fielder, even as a young kid.
  17. I think the difference is the fact that it was in Milwaukee, in front of the home town fans. The team knows they have been playing bad, and were probably just looking to celebrate after a hard fought win and entertain the home fans a bit. If they were doing it in San Francisco or elsewhere, it would be different...but I find it hard to criticize them for doing it in front of the home town fans who stuck through 12 innings of a hard fought victory.
  18. I don't know if I'd put too much stock into that. It's nice to hear Sheets speak positively about a possible comeback, but he is probably just keeping all options open at this point.
  19. Juan Nieves is a good idea, but it might make sense to wait a couple years for the 25th anniversary of his no-hitter, since it will likely still be the only one in franchise history (then again, maybe Dave Bush will finally get one, since he's made the run a couple times). George Scott is probably overdue for a bobble head, and I would bet a lot of older fans would get a kick out of seeing it. Prince Fielder "Home Run Derby Champ Edition" seems like a lock, assuming he's still with the team. To be honest, I get the sense that most fans don't really care who the bobble head is of, just that it's being offered as a giveaway.
  20. Adam McCalvy has something interesting in his latest blog post, in regards to Braun getting the day off today. http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/ Brewers manager Ken Macha said Braun had been complaining of "aches and pains" in his right shoulder, and indeed Braun emerged in the clubhouse following Monday's 3-0 loss to the Cardinals having just iced the joint. But Braun seemed surprised by the manager's revelation about his shoulder. "I don't know what he's talking about," Braun said as he walked away. This just seems weird to me. Maybe Braun was just upset about something else, but there seems like there's been a pattern of stuff like this throughout the season. I remember hearing Haudricourt talk a couple weeks ago about how Macha would say he was using McGehee sparingly because of his knees. Then McGehee would tell all the reporters there was nothing wrong with him. I know players don't like to talk about injuries unless they are really obviously hurt, but it just seems like the manager and his players are not on the same page at this point.
  21. Who knows if he'll even pitch again at this point? There's been zero news on him lately, and he's gone basically a whole year without throwing a pitch in a game. It's not like he's getting younger. I'm not saying he can't come back, but I wouldn't say it's a forgone conclusion at this point.
  22. Heether looks like he has done well in AAA this year, but might be another Casey McGehee type who is having a peak year as an older AAA player. Where would you play him if you're calling up Gamel as well?
  23. I agree with Snapper, to a point. I think Bush is serviceable enough, but Looper has shown he just isn't consistent enough to deserve to be back next year. Suppan proves everyone's worries correct by being awful this year. He should not be guaranteed a starting rotation spot next year. Parra is also looking to be very shaky, I think you can only count on him being perhaps a #5 starter at best, and if he does better, you take it as a pleasant surprise.. Throwing the same crap at the wall next season and hoping more of it sticks is not a good plan.
  24. Cameron has a strained hammy apparently. Braun is getting a day off, and might be banged up a bit. It's not like it matters to much at this point, but still seeing a win or two against the Cards would be a nice change of pace.
  25. Cool pics. Thanks for posting 'em.
