  1. Nottso, that is actually a good point. The extra year could drive up his value if he performs well, and he could potentially earn a bigger long term contract than he would with just one more year of service time. I'm sure he and his agent aren't necessarily looking at it that way though. It's hard to feel too sorry for him since he'll still get, what? $3-4 million minimum each of the next two seasons, either way, if I'm not mistaken.
  2. Yeah, I saw they had a game used Mike Cameron bat there on Friday night for like $1200. Cam is a great player, but that's still pretty pricey.
  3. Belliard is one of those players that always annoyed me...I think mostly his dumpy looks and silly hair, coupled with his habit of running the bases with his gloves in his hands. That said, he's had an OK career, probably better than a lot of more hyped guys have had coming through Milwaukee.
  4. People who call my personal cell phone before 7 AM when they're not either a family member, a friend, and it's not an emergency.
  5. Yes, I get tired of seeing that salary statistic thrown around too. I think prophet's baseball card analogy is a good one. I just can't believe some feel Hardy is somehow getting "screwed over." Time and again we see teams get "screwed over" by players, and it's "just business." When a team makes a performance based decision which is also a solid business decision, somehow now it's not "just business." Honestly, though, after how often the Brewers have been "screwed over" in the past year since making the post-season for the first time in 26 years, it makes me feel good that they'll actually get a bit of extra compensation (in whatever form) for the good of the franchise.
  6. I'm not sure if the Marlins would trade Nolasco. He is under team control for three more years, and has been very good since a stint in the minors earlier this year. It might take a bit to pry him away at this point.
  7. When you don't have enough high ceiling talent in your organization and you aren't able to buy it in FA, if you won't trade for it then how are you going to acquire it? This is pretty simple logic from my point of view. This sums up my feelings perfectly. I go back to how much the fans have supported this team too...we deserve better than to have the team just sit on their hands when they have an obvious problem. I also realize that what Melvin is saying now may not necessarily jive with what he does this off-season, too. But like you said, if you're not going to draft or sign pitching, you have to trade for it.
  8. Braun is too affordable to trade. By mid next year he'll basically have completely earned his entire contract, and we still have him for six more years.
  9. Yeah, we lost an average pitcher and a guy who is a #5 pitcher at best. The injuries wouldn't have mattered if the talent depth on this team wasn't paper thin. I just really fear if Melvin stays on as GM past this season, he'll take the exact same approach, basically putting band-aids over gaping wounds on this team. I hope Mr. Attanasio really weighs where he wants to see his franchise go in both the short and long term, and decide if he wants this same man guiding his ship.
  10. I really hope they give serious thought to that, HtR. He doesn't deserve to be "pencilled in" to the starting rotation. I guess give him a shot in spring training, but if he looks like "same ol' Soup Can", put him in the bullpen and use him as a spot starter.
  11. That would be nice, but we all know who Fielder's agent is. I would love to see the Brewers offer him a huge contract extension this off-season, and they very well might, but my gut tells me Fielder is going to turn it down. Then maybe it's time to seriously look at trading him. I would hate to see him go, but if trading him can help the team be competitive the next few seasons, even without him at 1B, then so be it.
  12. My point wasn't even about this season. What is done is done...it's all water under the bridge at this point. But to go into next season with the same philosophy is unacceptable at this point. The fans have supported this team in droves and deserve better than that. I'm at the point where I'd give serious thought to trading Prince at this point. I hate to think about it, but he's almost certainly gone in two years anyway. If we can get a couple good young pitchers for him, you almost have to do it. Or do they trade him next off season for less and still not have enough pitching?
  13. Yeah, I agree. The thought that this guy is going to be kept alive on tax payer dollars for many more years makes me sick. Plus his wife was apparently in on it too, which is incredibly disgusting and bizarre.
  14. Well, maybe it's time to find someone who will think a little bit more outside the box. Maybe Melvin's philosophy just does not fit where the Brewers are currently at as a franchise. I almost doubt if he really wants to stay here based on many of his public comments this season. He seems to specialize in rebuilding low level teams, and maybe it's time for him to move on from a team like the Brewers who should be contending at this point. I really do not want to go through another season like this one, before the wheels fall off the wagon completely and we're in full blown "rebuild" mode once Prince and others are gone.
  15. It would be nice to see Gallardo get to 15 wins or so before the end of the year...he deserves it. I hope Macha trims down his pitches thrown through the remainder of the year, though. Let's see two wins in a row, Brewers!
  16. I could see Hanley Ramirez being in the discussion (batting .366 with a 1.000 OPS), but Prince should be talked about, too. If the Brewers were doing better I bet he'd get some more attention.
  17. I'm glad to hear that. I hope they stick to that plan. He doesn't deserve to be recalled sooner.
  18. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/55946147.html "This off-season, Melvin sees it the same way and said he doesn't see many teams willing to trade a front-line pitcher, not even for a premier player. When Prince Fielder was brought up as a guy who might be able to bring back one of those pitches, Melvin said, "I'm not certain I want to do that." "It's still going to be very difficult," Melvin said. "The free agent list is again (short). … You're going to have to trade for someone having a down year and you have to hope you can turn a guy around. You're not going to be able to trade for guys with two and three ERA's." Honestly, it just sounds to me like he's already making excuses to hedge against future fan disappointment. If he approaches this off-season with the same mentality he did last year, I'm going to be extremely upset. He should have realized that sitting on his hands isn't going to improve the team by now.
  19. I had a good time at last night's game. Got to sit two rows behind the home dugout, which is always quite a neat experience. We took my in-laws to the game, and it was their first time ever at Miller Park, and they had a blast. So that was neat, too. Did not notice hawing on the video board, unfortunately. Going again tonight and hoping to see two wins in a row from the Crew. Of course tailgating again, which is always great, too.
  20. For me, it would be nice to see the Brewers salvage something from this disappointing season, and if that can be obtaining an extra service year from JJ Hardy, then so be it. It's becoming pretty clear he's not in their long term plans anyway, so I'd rather see them trade him with two years of service time and get more than they would with just one year.
  21. At least it might send a message to Brewers management (I wouldn't ever condone throwing things on the field though, since we're not trying to be Wrigley "fans" here).
  22. I understand they don't want to showcase merry go round games, but at the same time I wasn't exactly entertained watching kids strike out batters who had no realistic chance up there, either.
  23. At least Prince and others would probably put Bradley in line pretty quickly if he became disruptive at all. I do not like Bradley, but it's hard to think he wouldn't contribute more to the Brewers than Suppan at this point.
