  1. Really? "Grow a foot taller, kid."
  2. Why would they even need Putz at this point?
  3. Yeah...but we all know there isn't going to be some sort of salary cap in baseball, so whining about it at this point doesn't really help. It's just hammered home what most of us knew...that Sabathia was a rental. I'll remember fondly his time in Milwaukee, but like I said before, I won't cheer him now that he's in New York. They can pay him all that money, and even if he stinks for half of that length of his contract, it won't matter to them, since they can basically just eat it, and Cashman can go out and sign a guy who made his name on another team. I think Melvin probably has numerous back up plans ready to go...he had better, because if we finish this off-season without a top quality pitcher to round out our rotation, he's going to look like a complete idiot for waiting on Sabathia so long. We also really need to get some bullpen help. No excuses, time to make things happen, Mr. Melvin.
  4. Or even really with a couple youngsters like Gallardo and Parra at the front of it.
  5. Wow, I'm a bit surprised and disappointed. I guess after the reports yesterday (as shaky as they were) I thought maybe we still had a realistic chance. Good luck CC, but I won't be cheering for you anymore. I can't cheer for anyone on the Yankees, since it's like cheering for the house in blackjack.
  6. I guess I don't see the incentive on hoping for extra picks at this point. I'm more concerned about winning next year than drafting a bunch of guys that we won't even see in the Majors for three or four years minimum, generally.
  7. Well, I think a lot of the reports are based on reporters who actually did talk to Sheets in person at the end of this past season. Everyone has said that the impression they got was that he was dead set on the fact that he would be moving on. Of course, feelings could change after a month or two, and if he finds that there isn't a huge market out there for his services. It doesn't sound like the Astros are much of an option for him at this point, as once thought.
  8. I'm feeling the same way. I just hope this thing just wraps up soon, one way or the other.
  9. Yeah...while I always followed the team at least casually, I kind of soured on them during my high school days, when they were really bad in the mid '90s. I started really following them closely again towards the end of 2002. I think being done with school gave me more time to catch games in the evenings. Been following them every day pretty much since then.
  10. Buster Olney reports that the Yankees-Sabathia meeting went "great", whatever that really means.
  11. I agree. Supposedly Melvin is even going to meet with Sheets' agent this week...so it doesn't sound like there's no chance he will come back to Milwaukee, though I will be somewhat surprised if he does.
  12. With the discussions about Mussina and Maddux retiring, I thought this could be worth discussing in another thread. It kind of seems like we are in the middle of a "passing of an era" in baseball. This could be a big off-season as far as retirements go. Among the big names who could be hanging it up are Ken Griffey Jr, Frank Thomas, Jeff Kent, and Nomar Garciaparra. Jim Edmonds, Moises Alou, and Garret Anderson are some other players that could be calling it quits. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN wrote an article about this a couple weeks ago: http://sports.espn.go.com...crasnick_jerry&id=3712297
  13. As a little kid, I started collecting baseball cards, and being born and raised in Wisconsin, I was a Brewers fan by default. My dad was already a big fan. He took me to my first game in 1988, when I was 8 years old...actually, I think I went to one game earlier that summer, but to be honest I was so overwhelmed by the stadium and all the stuff to do, I didn't pay much attention. The game my dad took me to was a September game in '88. A young rookie named Gary Sheffield hit a home run and scored another run later to win against the Mariners. I was a huge Sheffield fan after that, up until when he left the Brewers. I even had a Sheff poster in my room.
  14. I'm not against trading Fielder, though I think Melvin will hold off until next off-season. We had just better get a heck of a return for him. One relief pitcher and a couple throw ins won't cut it. Thankfully Doug Melvin isn't a moron.
  15. The Brewers will probably never surpass the Packers in popularity here in this state. There are so many reasons for that, which have already been discussed at length on this board. I do think the next year or two are fairly critical on building upon last season's momentum. A couple successful seasons, including one or two more post-season runs, could really cement the Brewers as a once again serious sports franchise in this state. I don't think a World Series appearance is necessarily required...I think the majority of fans will keep following the team if they can stay competitive. If they falter badly, the Brewers will again be relegated to also-rans as far as popularity and sports discussion in the state of Wisconsin.
  16. Interesting. You have to think the Brewers could be putting a long term offer on the table for Hardy sooner than later, if he really wants to stay that badly.
  17. Haudricourt has a new blog entry up. No real news...kind of just a rehash of stuff that's already been discussed. Did re-confirm that Cashman is supposed to be meeting with CC's camp today, and Melvin should be meeting with them tomorrow.
  18. Even if he performs at 50-75% of what he did for the Brewers last year, over the course of the next 5-6 years, that will still justify the length of the contract.
  19. I admit to not having followed Dunn that closely over the course of his career, but where are these comments about him disliking Milwaukee coming from? It seems like half the time a big name free agent is brought up as a possible target of the Brewers, the "He hates Milwaukee," road has to be traveled in these discussions...not saying Dunn doesn't dislike the city, but I hadn't heard anything about it before this thread.
  20. Nice to hear, but one has to take such "I heard from so-and-so who heard from someone else" type comments with a huge grain of salt.
  21. I think they can. No one here knows the Brewers exact finances...they wouldn't be offering it if they didn't think they could handle the risk.
  22. Maybe they can give him an out clause after the 4th or 5th year?
  23. I remember a while ago, some guys on the radio were talking about "Who would you rather have in one game starting, with all the marbles on the line? Ryan or Maddux?" It was a pretty interesting discussion. I don't like ranking players too much, but I could see Maddux being in the top 10 of all time, if not top 5.
  24. I personally think Villanueva works well in the 6th starter/long reliever type role. He certainly helped out last year in situations like that.
  25. I agree. As much as I want CC back, I am almost hoping they just tell Melvin on Monday "There's no chance we're going with your team," so the Brewers can immediately puruse other options (and I'm sure he already is examining them). EDIT: MLB Trade Rumors has a story up, citing a Newsday source who says the Brewers could be upping their offer to 6 years/110 million. I still don't think that gets CC back, but you certainly can't say the Brewers aren't trying at this point.
