  1. If we got Dunn, and assuming Fielder plays somewhere between his '07 and '08 numbers, and Braun continues to be himself...well, that would be an absolutely deadly middle of the order, that's for sure. Maybe one of the best in the NL.
  2. Anyone have any idea on what kind of numbers Abreu could get? I suspect he will get a high dollar per year figure, but it might be only a two or three year deal.
  3. There are some "bands" that are basically just one man projects. Smashing Pumpkins could fall into that category...while they started as a group of peers, after their rise to fame, it was pretty clear that it was Billy Corgan's band. I believe he played all the instruments on their last couple albums, too. The Cure would be another example...pretty much Robert Smith has been the only consistent member. It's his band.
  4. I think if the core members of the band stay with it, it's still the same band. Kiss became somewhat different after Ace and Peter left, but since you still had the two main vocalists and "leaders" of the project, it was still Kiss (with or without the makeup). It really is remarkable when the same group of musicians can stick together for any extended length of time. U2 is pretty notable for this, having been together for about 30 years, and consisting of the same four guys.
  5. I disagree. After '09, the Brewers will need to seriously consider trading Fielder, and possibly Hardy as well. Hart will be closer to being a free agent as well. They'll need a new catcher, and who knows if Salome will pan out. Then there will be further pitching problems. This was supposed to be part of that "window" we were promised a few years back. Stepping back next year would be a huge mistake, IMHO.
  6. I wonder if he'll get the Bill Goldberg type of entrance when he shows up for his first game.
  7. Yeah, I agree with much of what BADGERJOBOB wrote. That projected rotation (as of right now), would not instill any real confidence. That said, I think anyone who thinks we're going into '09 with Gallardo as our #1 will probably be wrong. The Brewers have money, and they will get someone. I just hope it's a Sabathia/Sheets/Peavy type caliber of a pitcher, and not someone like an AJ Burnett type. I really hope some small miracle can occur that keeps Sabathia here, but I doubt it will happen. I just hope Melvin gets some sort of "yes or no" from CC's camp, very soon. You are also right that now is not the time to step back. Going back to being a .500-ish team after making the post-season for the first time in 26 years would be a disaster, in the eyes of the fans. I don't envy Doug Melvin's job right now, that's for sure.
  8. I like how he will call out certain players occasionally. There is a "Jim Powell enemy players list" that he's not afraid to be negative on, too.
  9. For me, I think I'd go: Jim Rice, Bert Blyleven (come on, let him in already), Ricky Henderson, and...Dave Parker. No Greg Vaughn love around here, eh?
  10. My biggest Dan Plesac memory was him throwing one pitch in the All-Star game one year ('89, maybe?). I was mad he didn't get to stay in the game longer. He was a good pitcher, but probably not really Hall of Fame worthy. Maybe he can go on the Brewers "Walk of Fame" someday.
  11. I noticed they shook up "The Show", and Dibble and Kennedy don't seem to be together anymore...I think that's a shame, since I enjoyed those two together.
  12. Heard Gord Ash on MLB on XM about an hour ago. He mentioned that it seemed likely the team would be offering arbitration to Sheets and Shouse (as well as Sabathia), but final decisions would be made this afternoon.
  13. I've never been much of a Star Trek...watched the TV shows in re-runs once in a while, but that's about it. The movie looks like it could be pretty cool, though. They are definitely trying to make the franchise hip and modern again, as you suggested in your post, TBWS.
  14. Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. I think in the unlikely event that CC comes back, Sheets would be extremely unlikely to return. Although it would certainly be nice having that 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation again.
  15. Can we avoid yet another circular grammatical semantics argument, please? Anyway, I am getting antsy, as I'm sure the fans of about 29 other teams are. Things should start falling together in the next couple of weeks, and I am excited to see what happens.
  16. I kind of agree with logan...we do need a "lock the door" type of guy, especially with Torres not coming back (not that he necessarily fit into that mold anyway). I am not sure if Fuentes is that kind of guy either. Seems like looking at his numbers, he was pretty good, but not a lights out type. I do realize he pitched at Coors, which can affect things somewhat.
  17. McClung has never been positioned as a closer. I'd rather see him used as middle relief or in a sixth starter type role. Heck, the way he pitched toward the end of this past season, he could win a starting rotation spot in spring training. Plus, with your projected bullpen, there are at least three guys in there with some big question marks as far as long term reliability.
  18. I do kind of agree that when the "band" is down to one original member, it shouldn't be considered the same band...but I guess if they're doing the same songs, no one really cares. There are a lot of bands from the '80s that are good examples of this.
  19. At least they are advertising it pretty well...I hear quite a few ads on the radio for places like Radio Shack advertising the "time to upgrade to HD radio" idea.
  20. I don't see how it can fail if more and more car makers start putting HD compatible radios in their vehicles. Plus satellite radio seems to be tanking pretty hard at this point (look at the price of their stock right now). HD radio could step in as the new alternative for people that want something beyond old & boring terrestrial radio.
  21. I'm not usually the one to start topics like this...but it's a relatively nice November day out here in Wisconsin, and I'm in a good mood. The fact that the wife and I are staying in town and going out to dinner with my side of the family makes it nice and stress free (hopefully). We did dinner with my wife's side last weekend. What are others doing today?
  22. Report on brewers.com says Melvin spoke with CC's camp this week, and wasn't able to get any real answer on if the Brewers have any realistic shot or not. With today being Thanksgiving, and then the holiday weekend, it sounds like we won't hear anything new until at least next week.
  23. I think the general consensus around baseball is that most teams have abandoned trying to find or position a "prototypical leadoff hitter."
  24. That is true. I guess, despite the fact that I do like the guy, I am at the point where I think Hall should be traded for whatever we can get. He's just screaming "change of scenery" after last year. Lowell could be a nice stop gap solution at 3B. As far as Branyan, yeah, I wouldn't miss him either. He had one nice month with the Brewers last year, but otherwise wasn't that useful to have around.
  25. I personally feel the outfield should be left as is, unless the Brewers are able to obtain someone who would be a clear offensive upgrade (like an Adam Dunn type that would fit well in our lineup). Otherwise, the real needs that should be addressed are the inconsistent infield, and the starting rotation. Also, we need a closer, but I have no doubt Melvin will obtain someone decent to fill in that position.
