  1. Did anyone mention the Tundra Territory out in right center? How many standing room spots do you think the Brewers gave away in order to put that up? And it's somewhat related: when did teams go back to putting ads all over the outfield walls? I know the really old stadiums had them, but then they were gone for a long time. I know that County Stadium's wall was bare until the early 90s, and in the 80s, it seemed like the thing to do at most stadiums was to put everybody's logo on the outfield wall (something I kind of miss), not advertisements. Was there a rule change, or did everybody realize at about the same time in the 90s, "Hey we can make money off of this!"?
  2. Phew. At least we made it to the 10th.
  3. If the Brewers lose this I'll be ready to take the midnight train going anywhere.
  4. Well, this has been an unfortunate turn of events.
  5. I was spoiled as to the outcome, but I still couldn't believe the men's 100 final. Bolt looked like he was just doing a practice acceleration instead of running the Olympic final. When he decides to run a 100 full-out sometime in the next few years, he might set a record that won't be touched for a very long time.
  6. Impressive show by the basketball team today against Spain. Just complete domination against the World Champions. And be warned...ESPN.com has the men's 100 meter dash results displayed pretty prominently on their front page (as does Wikipedia), so avoid those places if you want to be unspoiled for tonight.
  7. Yeah, my roommates were into the World Cup a few years ago, so I watched some matches with them. It's incredibly intense, and there's a lot of skill involved, but when you run around with that kind of intensity and skill for 90 minutes, and the end result is a grand total of three goals being scored...well...maybe I'm just a dumb American, but it seems kind of pointless to me.
  8. I worked as a food vendor for 5 years, and tips were always nice. I noticed they went WAAAY up after the switch to Miller Park. Practically nobody tipped me at County Stadium, but tons of people did at Miller Park. I know a bunch of that has to do with increased attendance; it also didn't hurt that the Brewers raised prices of a lot of things by 25 cents. When peanuts cost $3.25 instead of $3 (which were the prices during the first year of MP and the last year of CS), people are much more inclined to give a tip. It's pretty easy to just say "keep the silver," or pay with a 5 and say "no change." That added up pretty quickly over the course of a night. A question for those of you who tip mail carriers and garbagemen: how do you go about doing it? We moved in June and I have yet to see my mail carrier or garbageman because they seem to always come when I am not at home.
  9. One of my buddies is friends with a college professor. Some students in his chemistry class were trying to develop their own breathalyzers for their final project. He got paid to be part of the "exam," which consisted of going to his buddy's house, drinking large amounts of free alcohol, and then blowing into the homemade breathalyzers. Not a bad gig.

  11. Then those are people who haven't been paying attention and are still living in the past. Have they taken a look at this year's team? Maybe you could call Carmelo a "thug," but that's about it. USA Basketball is a lot different now than it was 4 years ago. And this is coming from someone who can't stand the NBA. That Phelps race was freaking insane. I was watching it with a group of people and it was a lot of fun. I was glad the protest was dismissed afterwards. And Torres has a chance at a gold tomorrow too! Just nuts. And Usain Bolt just looks like a machine right now. I don't think Tyson Gay can hang with him right now, injury or no injury. I hope I'm wrong; I like Tyson and want him to win, but I think he's going to end up with silver. The 4x100 should be an entertaining race too. IIRC, the US has only lost that race once when they didn't drop the baton, and that was in 1996. Both they and the Jamaicans have three guys through to the semifinals of the 100, so that relay is shaping up to be a great one.
  12. Dominican, Wisco, Regis, St. Joe's.....WISAA, ftw!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Even though the WIAA was/is superior, it was fun going to all those old WISAA basketball tournaments back in the day.
  13. Wisconsin Lutheran High School Mascot: Vikings Colors: Royal Blue, White, and Red (originally just blue and white, red was added when we changed conferences in the 70s because Watertown was already blue and white) http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/sports/gen/img/dec07/damon1201.jpg While football gets most of the attention at Wisco these days, the most famous athletic alum is a baseball player (and manager!), Harvey Kuenn. http://brewers.mlb.com/images/2005/07/26/fYOw69nv.jpg Another would be PGA golfer Mark Wilson. http://www.thehondaclassic.com/images/history-lg-mark-wilson.jpg
  14. I was amusing myself during the in-game chat today, while we were discussing Ned's current "lineup by position" template, and wondering what things would have looked like if the 2B-SS-LF-1B-RF-3B-CF-C pattern was applied back in the day. Here is what the batting order would have looked like for some selected teams in Brewers history (FYI - I took whichever player played the most games at that position per baseball-reference.com): 1970 (first year) Ted Kubiak, 2B Roberto Pena, SS Danny Walton, LF Mike Hegan, 1B Bob Burda, RF Tommy Harper, 3B Dave May, CF Phil Roof, C 1978 (first winning season) Paul Molitor, 2B Robin Yount, SS Larry Hisle, LF Cecil Cooper, 1B Sixto Lezcano, RF Sal Bando, 3B Gorman Thomas, CF Buck Martinez, C 1982 (AL Pennant) Jim Gantner, 2B Robin Yount, SS Ben Oglivie, LF Cecil Cooper, 1B Charlie Moore, RF Paul Molitor, 3B Gorman Thomas, CF Ted Simmons, C This led to the hypothetical question: What is more ridiculous - Charlie Moore batting 5th or Laynce Nix batting 3rd? 1987 (Team Streak) Juan Castillo, 2B Dale Sveum, SS Rob Deer, LF Greg Brock, 1B Glenn Braggs, RF Ernest Riles, 3B Robin Yount, CF BJ Surhoff, C Gantner would plug in at leadoff and Molitor in the 6-hole when healthy (if Molly didn't lose all his grittiness by DHing for awhile). Poor Robin…he had to go and hurt his shoulder, and got dropped 5 spots in the lineup as a result. 1992 (most wins in last 25 years) Scott Fletcher, 2B Pat Listach, SS Greg Vaughn, LF Franklin Stubbs, 1B Dante Bichette, RF Kevin Seitzer, 3B Robin Yount, CF BJ Surhoff, C Sadly, Stubbs did in fact hit cleanup several times that year. Molitor was a 1B by then, so he'd now be a cleanup hitter when he was not a DH. 2002 (the vortex of suckitude) Eric Young, 2B Jose Hernandez, SS Geoff Jenkins, LF Richie Sexson, 1B Jeffrey Hammonds, RF Tyler Houston, 3B Alex Sanchez, CF Paul Bako, C
  15. Contraction in and of itself was not a bad idea, but the execution of it was just awful. He announced it just a few days after an exciting 7 game World Series, in a season where baseball had built up a little goodwill by narrowly avoiding a strike in August. Not exactly the greatest timing in the world. And then there was the nagging problem that one of the teams he wanted to contract had just finished playing in the ALCS. Yeah, get rid of the Twins because they're losing money and clearly can't compete.....oops. If he wanted to contract someone at that time, it should have been the Expos and Devil Rays (who shouldn't have been around anyway...the 1998 expansion was unnecessary and kind of silly...but that's a different topic).
  16. I've found this site interesting...it has lots of different wartime posters from WWII. Here EDIT: I'm an idiot...after I posted, I realized you said up to 1941. There might be a few posters in there from the lead-up into the war, though.
  17. Clearly, the best solution is to start sending his stuff into firejoemorgan.com and let them have at him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif My lasting memory of TH is him referring to OPS as "bull" when discussing Branyan with someone a few years ago. That right there tells me that he's not the best man for the job.
  18. *DH in both leagues. *Worldwide draft. *Salary cap (don't know how much, but there should be one). *Some type of machine that calls balls and strikes (by the rulebook definition - the high strike is back for real) *Move up the start time of postseason games by an hour or so since they all seem to last about an hour longer than the typical game. That way people don't have to choose between watching the game and being zombies at work the next day.
  19. Anyone else watching the men's basketball game against China? I despise the NBA and haven't watched Olympic hoops since the Dream Team in 1992, but this is actually pretty entertaining. It's very fast paced, people throw outlet passes here instead of walking it up and backing someone down. LeBron and Kobe have each had some pretty amazing fast break dunks and Wade looks like he's healthy again too.
  20. My favorite "nostalgia" Brewers teams are the ones from the late 80s (when I was about 6 or 7 and really started following baseball closely). Tiny was one of the random, lesser-known players from those teams that I liked (along with Bryan Clutterbuck, Jim Paciorek, Juan Castillo, and others). I am not a clever person at all, so I just took his name and made it my user name.
  21. I think technically your stats "reset" if you switch leagues in the middle of the year. Also, since it's the NL Cy Young Award, I don't think his AL stats would/should have any bearing.
  22. Yeah, they have uniforms and everything! I agree that a sweep looks promising and sounds great, but honestly, 4-3 on this road trip sounds about right to me. It might be a little disappointing, but it wouldn't put us in a terrible spot or anything.
