TRADE: Brewers Trade Nestor Cortes to San Diego Padres
Trax replied to Jack Stern's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
I was hoping we'd get something for Cortes, and I like the get. -
Durbin, Vaughn, Jansen, we've made trades and 2 have had impact. They don't have to be at the deadline. The key here is don't overpay and don't make desperate bad trades. I don't expect any big trade here today, maybe add a middle relief guy IF the price is right. If we can find a trade partner for one of our rental older pitchers for a prospect I'd be far more interested in that. We have a couple that could go for the right return.

To answer the headline I think they've been too aggressive. I don't like the Jansen trade much although it's not a biggie and I would not have paid what Seattle did for rental ES. Sure if we can get a bat like O'Hearn for a reasonable return I'm all for it, but don't overpay for rentals or old guys soon to break down. Underpay or sit tight. This team is just fine as it sits. We need our prospects because MLB has designed a system that the small market teams can't compete in by throwing money around like the Dodgers and 10 other teams can. Our prospects is all we have.

I do not understand this trade. I don't see much gain, he's not a developmental prospect at 30, we gave up a developmental prospect. Will he truly bring much more than EH did?

Define "all in". What would you give for Suarez.? Gasser, Pratt, and Burke would be OK to give for the rental? I'm exaggerating the comp to make a point but there are limits. The Brewers would be far better off making zero deals between now and the deadline than overpaying for anyone. I like our lineup that has gotten us this far. Go ahead and better the team if possible but only with reasonable deals.

A guy like Cortes I'd be looking to trade once he has established he's indeed healthy and productive. I wouldn't give him away but obviously you're not going to get a lot. A lower level young prospect the team was high on but didn't get a year or so ago the likely return. As far as others I'd listen but depending on the player it would take the top of his value level, or with some beyond. Just don't go out and give up a top prospect or two for a rental or old guy with a bad contract. I like the present roster and we can win with it.

There are players we could trade but I am dead against trading future talent for rentals. Forget it. We have pitching depth and I would especially so be interested in talking trade with short timers. I'd hate to see young bats get traded unless we get controllable talent in return. I like our MLB roster just as it is....

I would ride out what we have. NO rentals that will cost us valuable prospects. Trade the excess we have in pitching...

The way Durbin is playing and Ortiz finding the bat finally I would make no moves to put them on the bench. Not sure what we have in Siegler for now. I'd be selling some pitching excess. Hopefully Cortez can get some action and prove himself healthy for just one we could move.

Injuries happen and can happen to anyone, but at some point the toll becomes overbearing. Mitchell may have had a lot of bad luck and/or he may be made out of paper-mache and glass. Either way it is becoming unlikely he will be with us much longer. He hasn't been all that great when healthy and he can not stay healthy. At his age with arbitration looming he will be an easy let go or throw in in a trade package,

If we are in a buy position in a month we'll both sell and buy. If not we'll just be selling, and often.

What is the Russ Smith injury that's shutting him down for the year? He's sure had a tough go of it,

Great writeup. It is so difficult to project long term for such a young player like Lara but the tools are obviously there. Dinges is one to watch for sure, if they can make a MLB catcher out of him, and he has the arm, they may really have a draft steal there. Flores I know the least about but he looks like he's on the way.

That certainly is amusing. The team (small market teams) needs to move older players on short or bad contracts. We need to build around our players who can be controlled long term and I don't think that contract shows any signs of being bad.
