  1. Reds up 4-2 in the 6th. Nats stink.
  2. Watching the Reds defense today and hoo boy it is not good. Nationals scored 2 runs in 5 innings on the basis of 3-4 plays that should have been made but weren't, and that doesn't count a pickoff play in the first inning that they had the nats runner dead that the first baseman flat out dropped. That guy didn't score. The second Nationals run scored in part because the reds centerfielder forgot how many outs there were and didn't bother throwing home on a relatively shallow fly ball. I don't think the Reds have enough pitching to get away with playing that bad of defense. They'll probably come back and win today because they are playing the nationals but that was an ugly display of defense for the second game of the year.
  3. It probably depends on whether the TIgers think he can play second base. Looking at their depth chart at second the Tigers have a top 100 prospect that only has 300 at bats at AAA, Andy Ibanez, a 31 year old journeyman(who did have a decent year last year) and Zack McKinstry. That would seem to be Keston's best shot at playing time. Assuming he can a) field at second base and b) hit major league pitching. If he could have done both of those he'd still be a Brewer I guess. So if you are predicting an outcome I'd think Matt Laporta and not Nelson Cruz.
  4. I see what you are saying, and you do have a point there. I think it works the other way too. How many guys are there like Craig Counsel that play into their 40s that would have been out of baseball for years if they had been judged only on numbers. Fans use those stats to judge if a move is good or not but the front office has access to a lot better information than we do.
  5. I suppose but his stance on only pitching one inning didn't change when he was traded to the Padres so that seems like more of a system issue with arbitration rather than a shortcoming of the Brewers. And as others have stated we will see if anything changes now that he has the guaranteed contract with the Astros.
  6. Someone explain it to me, based on a lot hitting metrics Soler isn't that much better than Sanchez. Sanchez is cheaper and can play catcher decently. Soler is an absolute butcher in the field and more expensive. I don't see the appeal at all for the Brewers. The giants absolutely need a power hitter so I can see why they went for it but I wouldn't want that contract on the Brewers.
  7. When Hader went all the way to a hearing in 2020 -- arbitrators ruled his salary should be $4.1 million instead of the $6.4 million he sought -- Are there people out there that think that if the Brewers ponied up an extra $2.3M back in 2020 that Hader would have turned down the 5 year $100M he got the astros and would be happy pitching for the Brewers for 5 years and $40 M or whatever? There must be some because I've read a lot of comments how the Brewers screw up with Burnes in arbitration like there was some chance they could sign him to before free agency.
  8. I'm not sure why that's hypocritical.
  9. I don't think it's that cut and dried in that I assume innings pitched has some value in arbitration, just that saves are worth that much more, I assume. His first two full years in the league he had 81 and 75 innings pitched. Since then he's never had more than 58. How much in baseball is there where a winning player does something that they don't get paid for? There used to be a lot more of it, going in hard to break up a double play. Nobody gets paid to do that but that helped win games. Sacrifice bunts. Nobody does that anymore either but nobody got paid for doing that. In the game today it's probably stuff like hitting the cut off man, taking the extra base, taking a pitch (Chuckie hacks on 2-0). Winning players make those plays even though that doesn't increase their arby figure or their free agent contract. That San Diego team had a boatload of talent and they didn't win jack squat. Team leaders with attitudes like Hader, Machado and Tatis Jr might explain why they underachieved. Grumpy old man rant over.
  10. I think the underrated part of this deal is the Brewers ability to improve catchers. Every catcher that has come into our system has improved defensively, If this ends up being a transition year and the Brewers end up being sellers at the deadline Gary Sanchez could be one heck of a trade chip if he maintains his offense and becomes average or above average defensively. He's got a pretty good arm and decent pop time. The knock against him was blocking balls. If we can improve that he becomes a very attractive piece for just about any contending team except for LA, Philly and Atl. So I can see this working out great for the Brewers whether they contend or not. As long as he doesn't contract Jesse Winker disease.
  11. Do they need to dump someone from the 40 man? They were at 39 before Hoskins right?
  12. This will be interesting. I was reading somewhere that there were like 6 decent 1b/DH free agent options out there but there were only 5 major league jobs that appeared to be available. Hopkins, Turner, Cooper, Santana, Martinez, Belt. So there might be a decent player out there looking for a job and time is getting short. I could see us picking up a guy on the cheap right before training camp. I'm fine with keeping that spot open for Yeli/Contreas etc but I wouldn't mind another upgrade either.
  13. Espada was Dusty Baker's bench coach. Dusty was 73 when he won last year with the Astros.
  14. It's at Citi Field. All the mets will be there anyway to clean out their lockers so it won't be a huge imposition to suit up one more time.
  15. It's not an impact bat but it's a sellers market. Ohtani is off the market. What other bats are out there that you can get? Candelario or Thomas from Wash, Grichuk, Bellinger. Is Stl dealing Arenado? They might not want to deal him in the division or deal him at all. That's not a lot of bats. There probably isn't anyone on the As or KC that could help us. With the Angels going for it there just aren't that many sellers out there and there are a lot of buyers.
  16. Is Chris Davis our manager? He currently holds the record at 54.
  17. I'm sure Yeli really wanted that nod but I'm happy he has a 4 day break before the stretch run, He's played 81 out of 85. That's more than I was expecting him to play. Only Wiemer has played more games than Yeli.
  18. Where do you get the high leverage bullpen numbers? I've been looking for them but can't find them. Our bullpen overall looks very mediocre but I didn't think it was that bad but couldn't find the stats to prove it.
  19. On my way into the park I saw 3 fans that were leaving with their jersey. So clearly some. I have seen a decent number of of those jerseys for sale on the internet at ridiculous prices $50-$100. Not sure how I feel about any of that.
  20. That play seemed very similar to the play when JJ Hardy broke his ankle with a late slide into home against the phillies. I'm wondering if at some point teams will start teaching players to just run through home plate similar to first base.
  21. He had a sneaky good year last year. He was an above average hitter for the first time in his career. 9 HRs in only 234 PA. Had an OBP above the league average. Good defense at second base. Only played 1 game at SS. He DHd more than he played SS. If he could replicate that performance over a full season he would have commanded a pretty high price on the free agent market going into his age 29 season I would think. He was probably smart to take that contract. Doubt he will do that over a full season. IF he does Braves got a steal.
  22. It's hilarious that in the article you listed there is a link talking about the financing. Recent California history justifies his concerns. SoFi Stadium in Southern California and Chase Center in San Francisco were built with private money, and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara was 90% privately financed. “And then I think there was some contagion where around the country people realized these deals could be done well privately and could generate a return on investment to those investors,” said David Carter, a sports business professor at the University of Southern California. “Why are we throwing public money at it at all?”
  23. In order to play chicken the Brewers have to have another city in which they can play games in. A city in which the Rays and the A's can't move to. A city that does not appear to exist. Again, that clause is in the old lease agreement. That clause hopefully will not be in the new lease agreement, if our elected leaders have any brains.
  24. That study was hot garbage. But if you want to believe it be my guest. I can also get you a great deal on the Hoan Bridge if you'd like to buy it.
  25. Until the lease runs out. The lease runs out in 2030. New lease new terms. The brewers have $80M under the lease's old terms for repairs for the next 7 years.
