  1. Looking at his stats, he's been pretty average over his last 10 starts (last 60+ IP); he was outstanding prior to that (first 100 IP). I hope he gets a second wind here for the stretch run.
  2. I have been wondering about this as well. W/L record is a notoriously uneven gauge of pitcher performance, as Benny's 2004 campaign showed. It's partly a function of run support, defense, bullpen, etc. -- things over which the pitcher has no control. And, obviously, if a pitcher runs into an injury or two, he's going to miss starts and not have the chance to win games. Still, it's weird to me that Sheets' W totals regularly are so low. Even with all of the variables that are pretty much out of his control, you'd think that he'd routinely win at least 13-15 games just by showing up -- and he's never reached that plateau even once. I can't imagine that it's a psychological/make-up issue, though.
  3. He is the master of the 28-hop groundball single, definitely. He had one in LA that almost made me laugh. Unless he goes seriously sub-Mendoza, though, I think he's going to get a pass because of his "handling of the pitchers" (what that means, exactly).
  4. If it's serious, I hope they have the sense to take the hit now and sit him for two weeks on the DL so that he's fully healthy when he comes back. (But maybe it was just a tweak last night? I hope so.)
  5. Not a huge deal, but I wouldn't have run him out there in the ninth. McClung probably could have used that inning of work more than CC. I do wonder about running CC into the ground. He did have 240 IP last year, but that was a little bit of an outlier for him, statistically; his other seasons were 180, 210, 197, 188, 196, and 192. He's already in that range now, with 195. Just FYI, I looked up "pitches thrown over the last 30 days," and, not surprisingly, CC leads MLB with 686. Parra is #23 with 592. Sheet is actually pretty far down that list, at #66 with 516.
  6. Kendall has only played in one less game this year than Braun (115 to 116).
  7. I am not saying TH should be fired, but over the weekend he clearly (and repeatedly) did what his boss very specifically told him not to do, in terms of getting too venomous when interacting with readers. In all kinds of occupations, folks get fired or suspended or reprimanded for that kind of behavior.
  8. I'm just totally amazed that TH is not being more contrite, simply for the sake of making this mess go away. What's next? Another "apology" on the blog in which he rips folks for coming to Adam's defense? (edit: thrice-nested quote --1992)
  9. I can understand the hesitancy about reproducing the correspondence here. It could turn into an enormous headache. I will say, however, that if the tables were somehow turned, and the JS obtained truthful-but-potentially-embarrassing material about BF.net that could be turned into a juicy story (hypothetically, let's say it's a letter written by Brian to a relative saying that's he's really a closet Cubs fan), the paper would run it -- in a heartbeat. As long as the material is accurate and there was no explicit promise of confidentiality, it's probably fair game.
  10. I sincerely hope that the Brewers can just move on from this series and focus on the 'Stros, who are the hottest team in the NL right now. They are lurking on the fringes of the WC race, 7.5 back. A bad series will give the Crew another team to worry about. (Conversely, a sweep will pretty much extinguish their hopes.) And how about this: Cecil Cooper is predicting that the Astros will sweep (per MLB.com): In response to a reporter saying that the Astros could sweep the Brewers, Cooper said, "I'm predicting that, I'm going out on a limb. You heard it here first."
  11. I am even more incredulous over TH's (mis)conduct now. Holy smokes. Let me see if I get this straight: Your editor chastises you for "crossing the line" in your interactions with readers, and you turn around and call the guy out by name and email in a snarky blog posting? And then you follow up with the reader with (apparently) equally intemperate emails? Oh, and everything is in writing, so there's no question about being misunderstood? I, for one, would love to see the complete correspondence, but I don't know if you're comfortable posting it here.
  12. I only watched the top of the ninth. I picked the right inning. (And Brian Anderson -- nice call on the Braun HR, dude.)
  13. Following sporadically online here, saw that Manny got RBI there. Was there a guy second and first base open?
  14. Exactly. The obvious (if unspoken) message of publishing the name and addy was: Send this guy some nasty email for narcing on me to my boss and messing up the blog. TH realized that and pulled back, but, as the saying goes, you can't unring a bell.
  15. Yes, the whole thing was transparently disingenuous. It was your basic non-apology apology. I don't know what possessed him to write anything beyond, "Although I really enjoy interacting with readers, etc., etc., I'm going to focus more of my energy on reporting and improving the content of my blog postings."
  16. I basically agree. Falsehood is the most significant hurdle, and I don't think that TH disseminated any kind of false information. I suppose that the guy could try to make some kind of harassment claim (since you could easily make the argument that TH seems to have publicized his name and email in a thinly-veiled effort to have him harassed by angry blog posters), but that would be a stretch (unless he does encounter some significant cyber-bullying). TH's bigger problem is going to in-house, I believe. From what it looks like from his own explanation, he was told to tone down his blog presence, and not be so confrontational. He then proceeded to not only rant against the person who complained about him, but also name the guy and post his email address. If I were his boss, I would have to question his professional judgment.
  17. I would not be surprised to see the blog shut down today (if only briefly). It's getting ugly. (Or uglier, I mean.)
  18. I doubt it. We had some side by side photos last time and it still wasn't conclusive. Yeah, probably so (unless it was one of those Nutri System before-and-after deals).
  19. Wow, it was atrocious even without the guy's full name and email. He's just becoming completely unhinged over this blog thing.
  20. The middle of the Cards lineup is pretty serious business -- Glaus, Pujols, and Ludwick. I guess my vent would be over Ludwick's production, which is just absurd.
  21. This is where some side-by-side photo action might be illuminating.
  22. Even if it's 270, he and CC are still among the heaviest MLB players ever. (Fewer than 200 players have played at 230+.)
  23. After this lull in the schedule, I'll be curious to see how the Brewers fare against the Dodgers, Cards, Mets, Cubs, and Phillies in the next few weeks. I hope they can just hold their own in those series and then clean up against the bad teams (three series against the Pirates, two against the Reds).
