  1. Hey, if you're not watching, you might want to. Mediate is winning going into the 16th hole.
  2. I kind of worry about the Mets. They are a mess right now, but they do have a bunch of talent. I think they could make a move once they resolve the Willie Randolph drama. And look the Braves. Even they weren't so atrocious on the road, they would be more in the thick of things. You have to think that they will play slightly better the rest of the way. I guess I'm worried about the second-best team in the East, whoever that turns out to be.
  3. Awesome live feed.
  4. I'm trying not to think of how many games out of 1st the Brewers would be w/o McClung.
  5. I thought that they did a good job with the would-be HR. Both of them initially said it looked like a HR, then, after ambiguously replays, Bill made the point that it was so iffy that you'd have to go with the non-HR call. And then they finally got a close-in replay and praised the umps for getting the call right.
  6. Although the stakes and circumstances were vastly different, I felt like I was watching Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, when Grady Little left in Pedro. I was literally barking at the TV about how the pitcher obviously needed to come out. And if Mota was the last option, why had he warmed up earlier?
  7. The only question is, Will his knee hold up? That might be the only thing that beats him. As for Phil: wow. A nine? (Even I've never hit that many roll-back-to-my-feet shots in a row.)
  8. What a travesty. What are the chances that a guy is going to work out of consecutive bases-loaded jams in extra innings? He was clearly gassed.
  9. That would be cool. I wish I had some of the Orioles games I went to in the 1970s....
  10. He's hitting a 3-wood (11.5 degree loft) off the tee, apparently. And it's a long course. Sacrificing distance for control is generally smart, but it's weird to see Phil doing it.
  11. When he's not biting his nails -- literally. It seems like he's always doing it when they show him in the dugout.
  12. Not much flash with Corey. Just solid performance in all phases of the game. I hope the team rewards him for being the most complete position player on the roster.
  13. I watched a bit today. I wasn't totally paying attention, but . . . is Mickelson not carrying a driver so that he can carry an additional wedge?
  14. I hate to see this semi-JV line-up with Ben on the mound, but I guess there's only so much you can do with injuries, days off, etc. Has Rivera caught Benny this year?
  15. It's really strange, visually, to watch balls hit into the outfield there. The OF walls just come into your field of vision so much more quickly. Corey caught a couple of bloopy little fly balls last night that almost had him on the warning track. It was weird to watch -- kind of like softball on TV.
  16. The IF should look interesting today.
  17. Manny is kind of a low-level flake, though. He pretty consistently does basically harmless oddball stuff, without, say, trying to run over trick-or-treaters, or having affairs with 15-year old would-be country singers, or whatever. He's a no-brainer for the HOF, really. (No pun intended.)
  18. Yeah, I think he's basically going to be serviceable, but not much above average. I just don't know about rolling the dice with him for one year at $10 million. I sort of understand the logic, but he was just so far removed from his prime, both in terms of time elapsed and injuries suffered.
  19. Have to tip your hat to McClung. He's actually been pretty good in 3 of his 4 starts. (This, of course, does not a career make.)
  20. Yeah, I just saw this story. I didn't think he would be great in Detroit, but I never envisioned a stop in Lakeland.
  21. My heart doesn't want to give up on Rickie, but my head sort of does. This is shaping up to be his worse offensive season across the board -- average is down, OBP is down, SLG is down, and his OPS+ is a whopping 79. I know he's young, etc., but he's just not getting better at the plate. (And his defense . . . well, we don't even need to go there.) What's really scary to me is that when you see "similar batters through age 24," one of the names that pops up is Dale Sveum. To be fair, though, there are several other serviceable guys on that same list, including Bobby Grich. So I guess the question is: which one is he going to be?
  22. I think most people would agree with that. It's probably somewhat analogous to Torre with the Yankees. But you seem to be edging toward the argument that Ned is a better manager than Francona. If that's true, then . . . would the Red Sox hire Ned to replace Francona, ever? Of course not. No team in its right mind would hire Ned after his tenure with the Brewers ends.
  23. Absolutely legendary Marylander. His passing really genuinely saddens me.
  24. Oh, that is sweet! Nick Zito is the man.
